Home Composers Bright Sheng updated 22 May 2002 Bright Sheng Photo: Wah Lui Proclaimed "an innovative composer who merges diverse musical customs in works that transcend conventional aesthetic boundaries," Bright Sheng received the coveted MacArthur Foundation Fellowship — the so-called "Genius Award" — in November 2001. "Sheng is a fresh voice in cross-cultural music," the Foundation Committee further noted. "He will continue to be an important leader in exploring and bridging musical traditions." Indeed, the new millennium promises to be an exciting time for Sheng. Within the 21st century's first week, he had two world premieres: Nanking! Nanking! , an orchestral work honoring those who endured the atrocities of the Rape of Nanking, commissioned and premiered on 2 January 2000 by the NDR (North German Radio) Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach; and Red Silk Dance , a piano concerto premiered on January 6th by the commissioning Boston Symphony, with soloist Emanuel Ax and conductor Robert Spano. In May-June 2000, the Spoleto USA Festival presented 8 performances of a visually stunning production of The Silver River (1997; rev. 2000), Sheng's multi-cultural, music theater tale of star-crossed lovers, set to a libretto by David Henry Hwang. Bright Sheng Bright Sheng, born in Shanghai, China on 6 December 1955, started piano studies with his mother at the age of four. After graduating from high school during the Cultural Revolution he was one of the first students accepted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he earned his undergraduate degree in music composition. In 1982, he moved to New York, where he attended Queens College, CUNY, and Columbia University. Among his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein, Chou Wen-chung, Mario Davidovsky, George Perle, and Hugo Weisgall. Sheng has received a number of prizes in China including Chamber Music Composition and Art Song Competition. In the United States he has received awards and prizes from the National Endowment for the Arts, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the Illinois Council on the Arts, The Naumburg Foundation, The Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, and the Guggenheim Foundation. Sheng was the artistic director of the San Francisco Symphony's "Wet Ink 93" Festival and composer-in-residence with the 1993 Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. In April 1992 he began a two-year tenure as composer-in-residence with the Seattle Symphony; during 1994/95 he served as Artist-in-Residence for the University of Washington. Since moving to the United States from China in 1982, the composer Bright Sheng has steadily built a world reputation for his fusion of Eastern and Western musical styles. Sheng's gifts of adaptability and openness were nurtured and steeled in his youth, as he struggled to maintain his passion for music in the anti-cultural climate of the Cultural Revolution . At Queens College, the City University and Columbia, his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein, Chou WenChung and George Perie. Sheng's one-act opera The Song of Majnun with librettist Andrew Porter was recorded on the Delos label by the Houston Grand Opera. His discography also includes a first runner-up for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize, H'UN (Laceration): In Memoriam 1966-1976 , an orchestral portrait depicting the crimes and losses inflicted by the Cultural Revolution (New World label), and Two Folk Songs From Qinghai (Kock International). Home Silk Road Bright Sheng Qinghai Updated 25 July 2000 The province of Qinghai holds special importance for Bright Sheng , as he lived there for seven years, from 1971 to 1978, during China's Cultural Revolution. In this excerpt from the Fall 1995 issue of , Sheng introduced us to his adopted homeland: Infobytes about the Province of Qinghai: This province, still an unspoilt nature preserve, features an enormous salt lake, "Qinghai Hu." China's biggest lake, it is the size of a small sea, and is home to thousands of birds. Long fought over by Chinese immigrants, the Tibetans, and Muslims, Qinghai has had a firmly established Han Chinese presence only around the capital city of Xining. This minority presence is still felt strongly in the province today, with substantial Tibetan, Hui (Muslim), Salar, Tu, Mongol, and Kazakh populations. Mineral deposits and oil have been discovered recently in the arid high desert near Qinghai's northwest border with Xinjiang. Extensive mining is underway, not to mention a gold rush! Itinerary G. He is also a very talented pianist and conductor, and gives concerts in each role. He will be artist-in-residence with the Washington Performing Arts Society until 2003 (a post he began in 2001) and will serve as co-artistic director of the Pacifika Music Festival with the Seattle Symphony in 2001. He will also serve as composer-in-residence at the Tanglewood Music Center for 2001. In the past, he served as composer-in-residence with the Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1989-92, for whom he wrote The Song of Majnun , a one-act opera in collaboration with librettist Andrew Porter. It subsequently received five other productions nationwide and was recorded by the Houston Grand Opera on the Delos label. In addition, he served as composer-in-residence with the Seattle Symphony from 1992-95 and was the artistic director of the San Francisco Symphony's Wet Ink 93 Festival. His vast array of works include: The Song of Majnun , an opera, which in one act, revisits an Asian tale of star-crossed lovers; Flute Moon , which reworks a classic Chinese art song from the 13th century; and Nanking! Nanking! a lamentation on World War II atrocities suffered by the Chinese. Affiliated with the U-M since 1995, Sheng has been commissioned by and performed at orchestras and opera houses in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Japan, Russia, Great Britain and Germany, and will present a full-length opera at the Sante Fe Opera in 2003. His national honors and recognitions include a Guggenheim Fellowship.
