HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Shostakovich, Dmitri Dmitrievich Russian composer. His music is tonal, expressive, and sometimes highly dramatic it was not always to official Soviet taste. He wrote 15 symphonies, chamber and film music, ballets, and operas, the latter including Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District in 1934, which was suppressed as too divorced from the proletariat, but revived as Katerina Izmaylova in 1963. His symphonies are among the greatest of the 20th century. His son Maxim (1938), a conductor, defected to the West after his father's death.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) Dmitri Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) and died in Moscow. His entire musical career was therefore spent within Russia's Communist system, and in many ways it is clear that he had to strike a balance between his own artistic inclinations and the demands of the state. He was taught by Glazunov among others, learning piano and composition and graduating from the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Conservatory at the age of 19 with his first symphony. This is a youthful, precocious work demonstrating his musical talents in no uncertain terms, with some similarities in approach to Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. Though this was an early success, his music didn't always enjoy the approval of the Soviet authorities. His opera "The Nose" received some criticism and "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" received oven more. In later years he was to enjoy more artistic freedom, but under Stalin composers and other artists ran the risk of their work being labelled anti-state "formalism". In some cases this could lead to "disappearances" so the threat was very real indeed. Shostakovich withdrew his 4th symphony before its premier for this reason and it wasn't performed until later under more liberal times. Some of Shostakovich's work seems to be simply paying his dues as an upright citizen but in many cases, although his music might outwardly be conforming with the party line, there is nevertheless the feeling that he is rebelling against this.

    Dmitri Shostakovich
Dmitri Shostakovich belongs to the generation of composers trained principally after the Communist Revolution of 1917. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a pianist and composer, his First Symphony winning immediate favour. His subsequent career in Russia varied with the political climate. The initial success of his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District , based on Leskov, and later revised as Katerina Ismailova , was followed by official condemnation, emanating apparently from Stalin himself. The composer's Fifth Symphony , in 1937, brought partial rehabilitation, while the war years offered a propaganda coup in the Leningrad Symphony, performed in the city under German siege. In 1948 he fell foul of the official musical establishment with a Ninth Symphony thought to be frivolous, but enjoyed the relative freedom following the death of Stalin in 1953. Outwardly and inevitably conforming to official policy, posthumous information suggests that Shostakovich remained very critical of Stalinist dictates, particularly with regard to music and the arts. He occupies a significant position in the 20th century as a symphonist and as a composer of chamber music, writing in a style that is sometimes spare in texture but always accessible, couched as it is in an extension of traditional tonal musical language.
Katerina Ismailova remains the principal opera of Shostakovich, with the early opera

The Fifth Symphony, finished by Shostakovich in 1937, is probably the most frequently performed of his symphonies, and it's easy to hear why. In it we hear the essence of Shostakovich's symphonic personality - it was with the Fifth that he returned to a traditional standard-sized orchestra and four clearly-organized movements, convinced at the time of the need for firm structure in symphonic writing.
