David Tudor
In the world of American experimental music, DAVID TUDOR was something of a legend. For a number of years following the Second World War, he was the only performer to devote himself systematically to this music. In doing so, Tudor became a touchstone for some of the most radical musical activity of the 20th century. The praise accorded him by the composers whose music he performed attests to Tudor's unique ability not only to meet the requirements of fully notated scores, but also to accomplish more than anyone had imagined in music in which some degree of indeterminacy was a compositional principle. David Tudor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1926. He studied with H. William Hawke (organ, theory), Irma Wolpe Rademacher (piano) and Stefan Wolpe (composition and analysis). His first professional activity was as an organist. He established himself as a pioneer in the performance of new music as early as 1950, when on December 17th, in New York, he gave the American premiere (and second performance anywhere) of Pierre Boulez' . From the early 1950s on, Tudor became John Cage's closest associate. Cage stated that all of his works until about 1970 were written either directly for Tudor or with him in mind. Tudor also gave first or early performances of works by Earle Brown, Sylvano Bussotti, Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christian Wolff, Stefan Wolpe, and La Monte Young, among others. These composers often wrote works expressly for Tudor and a number of them stated that Tudor's unerring ability to find his own imaginative and virtuoso solutions to the often puzzling and sometimes deliberately difficult problems of notation and performance was essential to the actual composition of their music.

David Tudor
"The basic notion was that the loudspeaker should have a voice that was unique and not just an instrument of reproduction, but an instrument unto itself."
A pioneer of live electronic music, David Tudor began his musical career as a pianist playing music by John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Towards the end of the 1960s, he stopped performing as a pianist and began working with modular electronic devices that he designed, performing actively with John Cage and with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
Although much of Tudor's music was commissioned by the Cunningham Company, he also collaborated with visual artist Jackie Matisse Monnier and, in 1966, composed a major work for "9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering", produced by Experiments for Art and Technology. David Tudor taught at Black Mountain College (North Carolina) and at the summer new music institute at Darmstadt, Germany.
David Tudor passed away on August 13, 1996 at his home in Tomkins Cove, NY.

He studied piano with Stefan Wolpe and became known as one of the leading performers of avant garde piano music. He gave the first American performance of the Piano Sonata No. 2 by Pierre Boulez in 1950, and a European tour in 1954 greatly enhanced his reputation. Tudor also gave early performances of works by Morton Feldman and La Monte Young The composer with which Tudor is particularly associated is John Cage . He gave the premiere of Cage's Music of Changes Concerto For Piano and Orchestra and the notorious . Cage said that many of his pieces were written either specifically for Tudor to perform or with him in mind. The two worked closely together on many of Cage's pieces, both works for piano and electronic pieces. Upon Cage's death in

David Tudor - On Live Electronics: As long as there are people who realize that machines are not interesting and that behind any music there has to be a live person, I think that we might be able to overcome the omnipresence of synthesizers and keyboards. A lot of it is in the character of the listening: if the loudspeakers themselves are just pumping something canned or whether they are really talking to you, and that's something that really only a musician listening to it can give you. I mean, if you have a musician performing a piece who is in the same space, who is listening to the sound, who knows when and how to make an alteration to enliven the situation, then you feel that something live is happening. If you don't have that, then you have to accept the fact that it's like going to the cinema. Things won't progress if electronic music remains on that level. From an interview by Teddy Hultberg TH: When you perform, sitting behind your tables full of components, you give the impression that something is going to happen here that is not totally predictable. It seems that you want to surprise yourself as much as you want to surprise the audience. Is that correct?

David Tudor werd in 1926 geboren in Philadelphia. Hij studeerde orgelen muziektheorie bij H. William Hawke, piano bij Irma Wolpe
http://studwww.rug.ac.be/~jnclaeys/Tudor.htm

DAVID TUDOR: ANEKDOTES
M.C. Richards and David Tudor invited several friends to dinner. I was there and it was a pleasure. After dinner we were sitting around talking. David Tudor began doing some paper work in a corner, perhaps something to do with music, though I'm not sure. After a while there was a pause in the conversation, and someone said to David Tudor, "Why don't you join the party?" He said, "I haven't left it. This is how I keep you entertained."
One day at Black Mountain College, David Tudor was eating his lunch. A student came over to his table and began asking him questions. David Tudor went on eating his lunch. The student kept on asking questions. Finally, David Tudor looked at him and said, "If you don't know, why do you ask?"
