Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) Student Project Contributed by Lin Yi-Ching
Life
  • Brazilian composer; first of Latin American composers to achieve international recognition.
  • A composer of different styles, he has been most influenced by late Romantic and Impressionistic music. His compositional style is strongly based on national elements.
  • Also influenced by J. S. Bach ("an intermediary between all cultures")
  • His journeys throughout Brazil during which he absorbed the folk, geographical, ethnographical, and musical influences gave him the impressions to interpret everything musically. In this way he saw the renewal and modernization of Brazilian musical style.
Characteristics
  • Major theme dominating his thinking and music throughout life: "an isolated human or group of humans journeying in immense, untamed landscapes, fighting dangers both spiritual and physical."
  • Frequent symbol: dawn.
  • Music fragmented, non-developmental, mercurial in mood and material.
  • All of his music is tonal.
  • Rich, triadically based harmonies derived from late Romantic and Impressionistic influences.
  • Pronounced national element.

Heitor Villa-Lobos
An enormously prolific composer and a man of exuberant energy, Heitor Villa-Lobos transformed the musical life of his native Brazil and put the country on the international musical map.
His musical education was anything but academic. From an early age he learned the cello with his father, and it was always an instrument close to his heart. He also gained a virtuosic command of the guitar, on which he improvised with popular musicians in his home city, Rio de Janeiro.
Between the ages of 18 and 25, Villa-Lobos travelled all over Brazil exploring various forms of Brazilian music and collecting materials. He later entertained Parisian circles with tales of being captured by cannibal Indians, who released him unharmed only because of his musical abilities. On his return to Rio, his attempts at formal training in composition proved uncongenial to his fiery and impatient temperament, but he did study the works of the great masters while earning his living playing in cafes. He composed continuously, gaining increasing recognition, and in 1922 received an official commission for a work about World War I - his Third Symphony 'A guerra' (To War).

Heitor Villa-Lobos
born in Rio de Janeiro in 1887, has, by virtue of both his immense output and colorful and accessible musical language,
become the most celebrated Brazilian composer of all time. His work not
only richly typifies the diverse and kaleidoscopic Brazilian scene but
also, in its abundance, originality, and vitality, provided the key which
unlocked Brazilian art music once and for all from the shackles of
European late-Romanticism.
After the death of his father in 1899, Villa-Lobos, determined to escape
the medical career planned for him by his mother, spent time playing
(probably cello and guitar) in the ad hoc musical groups which performed
and improvised in Rio's cafes, on street corners, and at parties and
weddings - the chtros. He then traveled in Brazil, absorbing musical
influences from his country's three main ethnic strands - Portuguese, African and Amerindian. This all resulted in the realization that the glorious aural amalgam which so impressed his soul was indeed the means by which concert music in Brazil would be revitalized and given a voice of its own.

Heitor Villa-Lobos Heitor Villa-Lobos was born on March 5th, 1887 in Rio de Janeiro. His mother, Noemia Villa-Lobos , would take care of the children and the house. His father, Raul Villa-Lobos Heitor Villa-Lobos , musical formation which later on initiated his way into music. Villa-Lobos was well traveled and well informed of his country. His many travels through Brazil are very famous, and the fantastic stories and legends about Indians who wanted to eat him while he was collecting materials for his compositions are very characteristic of his style of life. Many authors like Behague Appleby , his biographer Vazco Mariz and Enyart have demonstrated that his music is very influenced with Brazilian folk and traditional popular melodies. Villa-Lobos elevated the level of the music that traditionally had been considered "marginal" to art music and, doing this, he approached art music to the popular sectors. He was also responsible for the creation of a new system for music education (SEMA, Superintendência de Educação Musical e Artística, Superintendence of Musical and Artistic Education) under the government of Getulio Vargas . This agency had the task of taking music to the elementary schools, secondary schools, and other education departments of the municipality. Through SEMA he wrote and published his six-volume

Villa-Lobos and Arminda H eitor Villa-Lobos, in his lifetime considered the greatest composer of the Americas, wrote about 1,000 pieces. His importance resides in one particular fact, among others: he reformulated the concept of musical nationalism, and became its greatest exponent. It was because of Villa-Lobos that Brazilian music became known in other countries, eventually becoming universal in appeal. The year after his death, all his collection was entrusted to the Villa-Lobos Museum, created on June 22, 1960 by decree of President Juscelino Kubitschek and administered for 25 years by its founder, Arminda Villa-Lobos.

The famous Suarloaf mountain presides over the great city of Rio de Janeiro. The photo is from the excellent website of Embratur , the official Brazilian tourist ministry. H eitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro on March 5, 1887. "Brazil was not yet, toward the end of the century, during the years of Villa-Lobos' childhood, the gigantic state with all its problems of industrialization that it is now. Rio de Janeiro was still an idyllic city with its 600,000 inhabitants - precisely that charming garden town which immediately enchanted Europeans like Milhaud and Rubinstein,..." (Eero Tarasti, Heitor Villa-Lobos: the life and works , p. 37.) A rthur Rubinstein gives a quick picture of Rio de Janeiro on his first visit to Brazil, during World War I, and a few years before his first encounter with Villa-Lobos: "In 1918 one could not have called Rio de Janeiro a city that had been built and developed by its citizens; nature itself had created it. I would call it simply one of the masterpieces of nature. The inhabitants tried to spoil it later by building skyscrapers in imitation of New York but even the highest of them were dwarfed by the immense majesty of the surrounding mountains. Because it was divided up into several valleys and two or three disconnected beaches, it was impossible for the city to grow in this bay of paradise and so its fantastic beauty was preserved." ( My Many Years , p. 25.)

WHAT'S NEW?
  • Born in Rio de Janiero and trained first as a 'cellist, Villa-Lobos spent 1923-30 in Europe, where the compositions of Stravinsky made a great impression. His neo-classical love of J. S. Bach resulted in a series of works called the Bachianas Brasileiras in which Baroque forms were recreated with Brazilian color.
Returning to Brazil in 1930, he held a series of official teaching posts, founded the Conservatório Nacional de Canto Orfeónico, and the Brazilian Academy of Music, and tirelessly promoted music as a means to the creation of a national identity. He was a prolific composer. For more detailed information, we suggest you explore the following excellent websites which are devoted to Villa-Lobos:
