    Biographical note.

    Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Born in Venice, Vivaldi appears to have been quite a remarkable character. He started learning the violin at a very early age, being taught by his father and immediately showing great promise, and later became one of the most celebrated violinist/composers ever to have lived. At the age of fifteen he started his training for the priesthood, which took almost ten years to complete, and when finally he had become a fully fledged priest, in 1703, he promptly decided to give up saying mass, on the rather spurious grounds of ill health. Apparently it was not uncommon for him to leave a service in mid-celebration, complaining of chest pains, only to rush out and scribble down a new tune for a concerto. Although Vivaldi's main priorities were writing and performing music, he retained an almost life-long association with one of the major charitable institutions in Venice that was concerned with looking after and educating young orphaned girls – of which there were literally hundreds in Venice at the time. This place, La Pietà, as it was known, was also to become something of a mini-conservatoire of music. The children were educated with a definite bias towards music, all taking lessons on string instruments from Vivaldi and others. This led to numerous concerts being given by the youngsters to a remarkably high standard, which became something of a regular attraction in Venice. Vivaldi played a major role in the preparation and staging of these concerts and also brought in many other well-known composers and musicians of the day to take part.

    Antonio Vivaldi 1678-1741
Except for an interim appointment (ca. 1719- 1723) as Maestro di cappella to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, then resident in Mantua, Vivaldi was employed throughout his career as a musician at the Seminario musicale dell' Ospedale della pietà in Venice (1703-1740). Vivaldi composed more that 40 operas oratorios , numerous secular cantatas , Vespers, hundreds of concerti grossi and solo concerti and chamber music . Vivaldi's tendency to confuse novelty of technique with musical content was more than offset by his masterful incorporation of formal elements into the evolving concerto form. While in Weimar , Bach's instrumental works came under the influence of Vivaldi's Italian concerto. Later, through the work of Pisendel (student of Vivaldi 1716-1717) and the Vivaldi cult in Dresden, Bach's work acquired an even more Italian flair. Johann Sebastian arranged Vivaldi concerti for the organ, several for the clavier , and one for four clavier and string quartet . It is likely that Antonio Vivaldi exercised more of an influence over Bach's instrumental style than any other composer.

    Overview of repertory:
Vivaldi is best known now for his concertos and sonatas, but he was also an active composer of opera and sacred vocal music.
    Method of identification of works:
Works based on published sources are idenftied by opus number and work number. Most do not have other titles.
    Overview of sources used:
Our encodings of Vivaldi are based on new editions from early prints and manuscript sources. Prints are identified by opus number. The numbering of works published in England was occasionally changed from the original prints published in Italy and Holland. We have adhered to the Italian/Dutch numbering system.
    Reference catalogue:
Vivaldi's instrumental works are catalogued in Vol. 1 of Peter Ryom,
    Work titles/numbers:
In general opus and work numbers are straightforward in this repertory. Many of Vivaldi's works are known in variant versions. The Ryom catalogue usually assigns separate numbers to these. Thus the violin version of the concerto Op. 8, No. 9 is 236, while the oboe version is RV 454.
    Movement titles/numbers:
Apart from the "Four Seasons" (Op. 8, Nos. 1-4), in which many movements have both tempo indications and program titles, most of the description of movement titles and numbers in Vivaldi's works is straightforward.

    Biography
    Antonio Vivaldi
Composer Italy Born 4 Mar 1678
    Died 28 Jul 1741
Vivaldi composed more than 500 concertos. Over 230 of them are for solo violin, the most famous being his Op 8, the 'Four Seasons'. His prowess as an impresario and stage composer may not have substantially advanced opera, but as a violinist, Vivaldi experimented widely with form and effect. 'The Four Seasons' has been hugely popular in the last quarter of this century, giving a rather unrepresentative picture of Vivaldi's music (which Stravinsky described as 'the same concerto 400 times').
Vivaldi was born, and lived virtually all his life, in Venice. He took minor orders at St Mark's, Venice, in 1693, at the age of 15. At the same time, he studied musical theory and the violin. Between 1704 and 1740, he was employed by an institution for foundling girls in Venice that had a good all-female orchestra and choir. However, he was away from Venice a good deal - initially, in 1713, to supervise the performance of his first opera in Vicenza, then, in 1718, he and his father took over the management of the St Angelo Theatre in Venice. There, he staged many of his own operas before obtaining leave to go to Mantua for three years as maestro di cappella. All the while, he had to send concertos, motets and choral works by post to the girls' school in order to keep his appointment there.
In Trieste in 1728, the Emperor Charles VI was so taken with Vivaldi that, it was said, he 'talked to him alone more in a fortnight than he talks to his ministers in two years'. Vivaldi dedicated his Op 9 'La Cetra' ('The Lyre') to the Emperor, then took leave to visit Prague and Vienna.
