PETER WEIR
Interviewed by Judith M. Kass
Peter Weir was interviewed by Judith M. Kass in New York City on January 8, 1979, in connection with the U.S. opening of his new film The Last Wave. The Last Wave concerns a lawyer, played by Richard Chamberlain, who defends five aborigines accused of killing a sixth in Sydney, Australia. Through them Chamberlain comes in contact with what the aborigines call "dream time" and his own involvement with their myths. Richard Chamberlain is principally known in this country as the star of the TV series Dr. Kildare. What is not so widely known is that after becoming a star he left the U.S. to learn how to act. Why did you choose him for The Last Wave? I thought he'd always been poorly photographed in white light. When I think back to Kildare I think of those hot lights and I thought he'd never been photographed at night. I don't mean that literally, but there was something in his face, there was some alien quality, and in my story my character had that quality. I had one actor in Australia I'd thought of using, but he was unavailable. Also, we couldn't raise all the money in Australia and Chamberlain's name occurred to somebody and I remembered that face, those eyes in particular. Gulpilil, the young aboriginal star, is familiar to American audiences as the star of Nicolas Roeg's

This week's musical headliners are Judith Weir, Monica Huggett and Les Petits Violons de Cornell
Major concerts tonight and over the weekend from the Department of Music, free and open to the public, feature the work of visiting artists, composer Judith Weir and violinist Monica Huggett. In recent decades, composers from the British Isles have been creating some of the most imaginative and polished music anywhere. In its last concert of the 2001-02 season, Ensemble X highlighted one of the them, Judith Weir, from Aberdeen, Scotland, featuring four of her works. In October 1999, Ensemble X presented two of Weir's pieces, and one of those, The Consolations of Scholarship , will be performed tonight, again featuring Felty. Also featured tonight will be Kellock, singing eight roles from Weir's King Harald's Saga , a three-act
opera from 1979 scored for solo soprano only and packed into just under 10 minutes. And this time the composer will be on hand for the concert and, with Stucky, for the pre-concert discussion from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. Weir since 1985 has been an artistic director of the Spitalfields Festival (jointly with Michael Berkely and Anthony Payne until the summer of 1997). She is the holder of a Critics' Circle Award (1994) and Lincoln Center's Stoeger Prize (1997). And in 1995, she was made a commander of the British Empire.

Free BSO? Free Steve Reich? Does the MIT music program ever cease to amaze? For two weeks near the beginning of April, as some music students already know, the Endellion String Quartet was hosted by the MIT music program through the MIT Artist in Residence Program funded by the Office of the Arts and a number of other munificent organizations. They concluded their three-concert public appearance in Kresge Auditorium last Thursday, April 13, at 8 p.m. Although they are world-renowned for their Haydn and Mozart recordings, the Endellions displayed some impressive versatility in all three of their programs. The basic outline for each program was (1) Haydn quartet, (2) 20th century British quartet, and (3) 19th century German quartet. For their last concert on April 13, they played Haydn's Quartet in E-flat, Op. 71, No. 3

The St. Magnus Festival - A Celebration. The St. Magnus Festival. How did it start? What is it now? Where is it going? These intriguing questions are addressed in this first-ever detailed book on the Festival - 25 years on - with contributions from key local figures and international stars who have performed in Orkney. Celebrating twenty-five years of Orkney's prestigious St. Magnus Festival through the words of those who have taken part, this book is a unique exploration of the annual series of midsummer arts events which have helped to put Orkney on the map. Through near 200 brand new and substantial contributions - both written and verbal - many world-class musicians, writers, artists and journalists have jointed forces with visitors, organisers, local performers and volunteers, to tell for the first time, the story of the St. Magnus Festival. They show how it has evolved from Max's original vision to take its place on the cultural world stage whilst keeping its roots firmly in the island community from which it sprang. Its depth, range and warmth of the contributions to this book are a testament to the festival's continuing explosion of magic every midsummer in Orkney. Program #95, March 14 2002: 20th-century theatre pieces series , part XV: Judith Weir's A Night at the Chinese Opera
In this second of four consecutive programs dedicated to compositions by women , Judith Weir's brilliantly intricate opera forms the centerpiece of this month's installment of the 20th Century Theatre Pieces series. Based on a 13th century Chinese source one of many times Weir has drawn inspiration from Chinese cultural space her libretto recasts the basic story into a rarefied space between irony and sympathy, between orientalism and mockery of same a space described as "brilliantly funny but alarming, disarmingly simple but rich, tuneful but not nostalgic". We got started with some recent myth-based work by Chinese composer Chen Yi, then examined two small chamber operas by Weir the latter of the two being a kind of dry run for Night , as it too draws upon the same textual source, albeit to a different end. We then heard the opera in its entirety.
