ABSTRACT Keywords: Multiagent Systems, Economics, Simulation, Classifier Systems, Anticipatory Systems. This article is a modified version of a work presented in the 4th Conference on Information Systems, Analysis and Synthesis - ISAS'98, held at Orlando, FL, in July 12-16, 1998 and first published in its proceedings at pp. 64-69.

  • 1. INTRODUCTION Economic systems can be considered as evolving complex systems where economic agents rationally perform actions in order to reach a better degree of satisfaction. In this way, the agents organize themselves and make decisions about producing, investing and consuming. Those decisions are taken in a context of uncertainty, and they are based on the beliefs (or expectations) that the agents have about possible future states of the environment.

    Introduction
In this paper we provide an overview of three fundamental reasoning formalisms in artificial intelligence which can and have been used in modelling legal reasoning. These formalisms are deductive, inductive and analogical reasoning. We do not insist that legal decision support systems must incorporate all three formalisms; however it is our belief that truly intelligent systems will eventually incorporate at least these three. There are of course many other artificial intelligence approaches which may be useful in legal decision support systems, but which have yet to be fully exploited in law. We will mention these in our conclusion and indicate where we believe they might be used, but focus in this paper on those approaches which are currently well established in law. We begin by giving a discussion of deductive systems and in particular how they have been used in legal decision support systems. We show how rules can be used to represent both statutory material and case law. We then consider reasoning with cases directly, and focus on induction. Then we examine the use that lawyers make of analogy, and how we may build systems which perform analogical reasoning. We conclude with a discussion of how researchers have gone about integrating the formalisms previously discussed. But before we begin, we need to agree on a common definition of deduction, induction and analogy. While many would dispute aspects of these definitions, we will nonetheless use them in the context of this paper since we believe they are the most useful definitions when working in the legal domain.

    Introduction
At first sight, the designation of the topic of this special issue, "MIND <> COMPUTER", also transcribed as "Mind NOT EQUAL Computer", looks like a piece of computer ideology, a line of some dogmatic code. But there are as yet no convincing artificial animals, much less androids, and computers are not yet ready for the unrestricted Turing test. Although they show a high degree of proficiency in some very specific tasks, computers are still far behind humans in their general cognitive abilities. Much more, and in much more technical detail, is known about computers than about humans and their minds. Thus, the required comparison between minds and computers does not even seem possible, much less capable of being stated in such a simple formula.
    incompleteness
