Organize and Pay Your Bills: A Simple System ... Awards for our site AD/HD and Medication: The Basics There has been controversy about the use of medications to treat both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder There have been articles debating whether Ritalin is over or under prescribed. When people ask me about this, I tell them that I can only answer for the children and adults that I have evaluated or treated. Yes, there probably are some individuals who have received medication when some other treatment might have been better. On the other hand, there are probably others who were not been diagnosed for years and could have benefited from medication. Finally, even if someone has attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and is on medication, is it the best medication, dosage and timing?

A Message from Brandi
In 1995, I was a single mother with an undiagnosed ADHD child. Every day was a battle. My son's struggles with ADHD, the abusive treatment he was receiving from the hands of the "trained professionals" at his school, the lack of support from the medical community and my family, drove me to search for knowledge as well as for a way to protect my son's rights. What I found was very little. My frustrations eventually drove me to the internet. I created a web page about my experiences and what I had learned from them. I also created a place for parents in similar circumstances to post their challenges and issues and provided a forum for them to exchange information. Eventually, as information became available, I did my best to get it out to parents so that their children would not have to suffer as my son did. I never imagined that nine years later, the need for information would be as great if not greater than it was in 1995. Today, there are literally dozens of sites designed to help parents with ADD/ADHD, co-existing disorders, special needs and behavioral issues. Many of these sites are provided by medical professionals and others much more qualified than I am. That, along with real life issues such as my own health, caring for my parents and the transition of my children from teenagers to adults leaves me with less and less time to devote to my site the time and energy that my readers deserve.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)? AD/HD is a neurobiological disorder that likely affects activity in the parts of the brain which regulate impulse control and attention. According to the National Attention Deficit Disorder Association, approximately 4% to 6% of the general population have AD/HD. People with AD/HD may have difficulty with attention or excessive or excessive activity, including impulsivity. They also may have a combination of symptoms from both categories as listed below: Individuals with AD/HD, primarily inattentive type, may have difficulty with the following:

  • Following instructions
  • Memory
Individuals with AD/HD, primarily hyperactive/impulsive type, may have difficulty with the following:
