Medications Prescribed for ADD and ADHD People with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have difficulty sustaining attention and concentration. They typically exhibit inappropriate levels of activity, distractibility, and impulsivity. While ADD and ADHD are usually diagnosed in childhood, they can last (often undetected) throughout adolescence into adulthood. If left untreated, the disorder can have long-term effects on a person s ability to function well in social situations and to do well at school or work. Over time, those with untreated ADD or ADHD can be at high risk for developing depression, anxiety disorders, or other emotional problems.
Both ADD and ADHD are very complex conditions; an individual with either of the disorders may have very different symptoms than another person who has the same disorder. Although not all health care professionals distinguish between types of ADD and ADHD in the same way, most use the following types:
  • Predominantly Inattentive Type Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type Combined Type
Sometimes a combination of therapy and medication is indicated. Of all the medications prescribed to treat ADHD, stimulants are often the most effective. Paradoxically, medications that are mild stimulants often deliver a calming effect to the central nervous system (brain and nerves) of those with ADHD. In some cases, antihypertensives or antidepressants may be prescribed. Whenever medication is included as part of the overall treatment plan, it is extremely important to work closely with the prescribing physician or therapist.

ADD (or attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are two of the most common disorders associated with Tourette Syndrome. Obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, is also experienced by many children and adults who have Tourette Syndrome. Combined, Tourette Syndrome, ADHD (or ADD) and OCD are commonly referred to by neurologists as the Tourette Trifecta. ADHD and Children Who Are Gifted
Frequently, bright children have been referred to psychologists or pediatricians because they exhibited certain behaviors (e.g., restlessness, inattention, impulsivity, high activity level, day-dreaming) commonly associated with a diagnosis of ADHD. Almost all of these behaviors, however, might be found in bright, talented, creative, gifted children. Until now, little attention has been given to the similarities and differences between the two groups, thus raising the potential for misidentification in both areas-giftedness and ADHD. This digest provides specific differences between the two groups that will help parents and educators better understand and evaluate their children.

    Understanding Childhood Disorders
Because of the seemingly carefree nature of their lives, children have been thought not to suffer from mental and emotional disorders. However, studies have indicated that children do, in fact, suffer from disorders typically thought to occur only in adults. Learning and conduct disorders, substance abuse, conditions such as autism and depression, and suicide are common in our young population. When children develop mental or emotional disorders, parents often blame themselves. But childhood disorders are likely caused by a combination of many factors. It is important to recognize the problem and seek treatment as soon as possible. Often these conditions can be treated effectively, allowing our children to grow into happy, productive adults.
    Types of Childhood Disorders
Recognizing and understanding some of the disorders common in children is the first step.
      Mood Disorders
Major depression, manic depressive disorder (also called bipolar disorder) and mania are disorders which cause change in a child's mood. Depression is considered to be the most common mental disorder. It is often mistaken for "the blues" and therefore goes untreated. Depression is caused by a number of factors, from chemical imbalances to environmental influences to genetics. Major depression causes people to feel hopeless, exhausted and useless. More than changes in mood, major depression can cause problems with sleep, appetite, self-esteem, daily activities and physical health.

    A Developmental Approach
    by Patricia S. Lemer, M.Ed.

"Every year the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) receives thousands of requests for information about the education and special needs of children and youth with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). Over the past several years, ADD has received a tremendous amount of attention from parents, professionals and policymakers across the country so much so, in fact, that nearly everyone has now heard about ADD or ADHD. While helpful to those challenged by this disability, such widespread recognition creates the possibility of improper diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Now, more than ever, parents who suspect their child might have ADD or ADHD and parents of children who have already been diagnosed with the disorder need to evaluate information, products, and practitioners carefully." National Information Center for
    Children and Youth with Disabilities
    (NICHCY)

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (add-adhd, ADHD, AD/HD) is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both children and adults. Many of these individuals were previously labeled hyperactive or minimally brain damaged. According to the American Psychiatric Association, it is estimated that there are approximately 1.6 to 2 million people who have this disorder.

Although parents of children with disabilities are frequently more familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), they should also acquaint themselves with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (hereinafter "Section 504"). Knowledge of both statutes, and particularly their implementing regulations, often is necessary to be sure of securing an appropriate education for children with disabilities. Indeed, for some children with disabilities, Section 504 may be more important the only legal mandate requiring education agencies to provide special education or related services to a child with a disability.
This article will familiarize parents with why and how Section 504 impacts the education of children with disabilities; illustrate some of the differences between Section 504 and IDEA; and provide a basic explanation of "how Section 504 works." It is vital to remember, however, that literally volumes have been written on these topics and, therefore, no one should rely solely on this article to undertake legal action. A suitable next step in the learning process might be review of RIGHTS OF PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PERSONS (Shepard's/McGraw-Hill, Colorado Springs, Colorado: 1984), a concise but very sophisticated explanation of this area by Professor Laura F. Rothstein of the University of Houston School of Law.

in memory of Kurt Cobain 1967-1994
(If you have a gifted child, you should read this (Is It A Cheetah?) at least once!)
There are a number of people who clearly have ADHD or the equivalent to the extent of not being able to adequately function in life. This article is not intended to dismiss the use of Ritalin in all cases. If your child is in that category (or if you are in that category), I'm sure you won't be dissuaded in any case. You'll probably also agree that the drug is being grossly overprescribed to those who do not require drug therapy! Ritalin is a tradename for Methylphenidate hydrochloride, an antidepressant stimulant. There is no generic common name for the drug. Other antidepressant stimulants are real cocaine, novocaine, other cocaine substitutes. Ritalin is not a classic antidepressant in the sense of Prosaic. Street names for Methylphenidate hydrochloride are "r-ball" and "vitamin r." While children are the obvious victims here, the same message applies to adults. If you are the student, please excuse the third party ("your child") language. The message is the same!

is a Stimulant Drugs for ADHD and ADD
The prescription of stimulant drugs for ADHD and ADD is an increasingly controversial area of treatment. Stimulants are worrisome alternative for many reasons. Since 1991 prescriptions for all drugs to treat ADHD have quintupled. This year about six million children, roughly one child out of every eight, will take Ritalin or other forms of methylphenidate. The number of stimulants prescribed for children 2 to 4 has increased 200% to 300% between 1991 and 1995. Studies show that stimulants cause especially severe reactions in young children. Since there are no good studies, no one knows what it does to the development of the very young child's brain. First it is important to realize that all of the stimulant drugs prescribed for ADHD/ADD are closely related to some illegal street drugs. These include dextroamphetamine (dexedrine) (street name: "dexies"), methamphetamine (street name: "crystal meth"), and, of course, cocaine. We imprison people for making drugs very similar to the drugs we prescribe to our ADHD children.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and its Connection to ADD/ADHD
    Preface
After many delays, and revisions, this manuscript represents an attempt to summarize much of the background and current literature to date regarding this confusing phenomenon we call CFS/CFIDS and its potential connection to ADHD in children (and adults).
In writing this, I am attempting to help physicians, patients, educators and others further understand this complex phenomenon. I have attempted to separate what is "accepted" and/or verified by literature publications, versus my "opinions" and "positions."
To all of you reading this, I hope this helps add some insight and understanding of the complex epiphenomena. To all of you who may have and are suffering with this illness, I hope you will soon see an acceleration of our clinical knowledge, such that successful treatment protocols are available in the near future for all.
The question is often asked, "What can be done as patients." With recognition by our medical establishment of the legitimacy of this problem, they are encouragingly on a path to find answers to verify or disprove clinical opinions and further basic science, with an attitude significantly different from even a year ago. This author believes the critical need for patients (via hopefully corporate or private funding sources) is to accelerate steps that will "jump-start" controlled therapies, while our medical establishment searches for all the scientific answers.
