Responding to a pioneering advocacy campaign on behalf of people in recovery, Christian Dior has agreed to change major elements of the advertising campaign for its Dior Addict perfume and cosmetics.
After meeting with representatives of the addiction and recovery community in New York in late January, Christian Dior President Claude Martinez said that while the company would not rename the product as advocates had requested it would stop using the tagline "admit it" in its marketing materials. Martinez also said that ads would be altered to emphasize the full name of the product "Dior Addict" in line with the company's contention that the campaign was meant to imply that the Dior "brand and lifestyle" are addictive.
In addition, Dior promised not to use the word "addict" alone to promote its products, and to remove an image of a bicep with a lipstick tattoo from ads and the internet. However, other controversial elements of the campaign remain, such as using the words "addiction," "sensuality," "pleasure," and "energy" to promote Dior Addict.
"Parfums Christian Dior and our parent company, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vutton, fully recognize the serious public-health issue of addiction," said Martinez in a Jan 23 letter addressed to Susan Rook and Rick Sampson of

    Addiction and Recovery and OCD
1 : the quality or state of being addicted (addiction to reading)
2 : compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful
: the act, process, or an instance of recovering

    Most of us
are about as eager to be changed
as we were to be born, and go through our changes in a similar state of shock. I am recovering from addiction, or alcoholism if you prefer ( alcohol being just the last of a long line of drugs I used), on the 12 step path. I do not speak for any of the fellowships. What I write here and on my other pages is just my experience . Take it for what it is worth. There are other paths of recovery from addiction, but I cannot speak of those not having any experience that I can pass on. Whenever I give a talk or share my experiences with newcomers, I am almost always a little hesitant to share what my early recovery was like. My experience of early recovery, say the first 18 months or so, was not pretty nor very typical. I am Dual Diagnosed. In other words I am an addict and mentally ill with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). "Self-medicating," using alcohol and other drugs in part to mask the symptoms of OCD, kept me out there a long time after I knew I was an alcoholic. When I stopped drinking, the disorder I live with and just being newly sober and emotionally raw, made life very difficult. My marriage fell apart, I lost my job, had no place to live that I could call my own. All the stuff that is supposed to happen before you get sober. Things were so difficult for me my sponsor once announced to my home group that if I ever had a good day I would relapse. Only partly joking I believe.

The Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study Model
Chapter 5 Phase I: Psychoeducational Group Sessions
Phase I is a structured, psychoeducational group that is offered for 90 minutes per session for the first 12 weeks of treatment. The psycho-educational group is designed to enhance knowledge regarding addiction and recovery. During this early period in recovery, many cocaine-dependent clients experience postacute withdrawal symptoms, struggle with their motivation to change, and are only beginning to abstain from cocaine and other substances. Therefore, they need support and encouragement in addition to information about addiction and recovery.
    Purpose
Phase I group sessions are designed to provide clients with relatively frequent, supportive contact with the counselor and other men and women in recovery; introduce clients to key concepts about addiction and the recovery process; help clients understand how they may set themselves up to relapse; and help clients develop strategies to reduce their relapse risk. The group program helps empower members to establish and maintain abstinence, develop a sense of personal responsibility for their recovery, develop supportive interpersonal relationships, and continue participating in a self-help program such as AA, NA, CA, or other support groups.
