Definition

An adjustment disorder is a debilitating reaction, usually lasting less than six months, to a stressful event or situation. It is not the same thing as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which usually occurs in reaction to a life-threatening event and can be longer lasting. Description
An adjustment disorder usually begins within three months of a stressful event, and ends within six months after the stressor stops. There are many different subtypes of adjustment disorders, including adjustment disorder with:
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • mixed anxiety and depression
  • conduct disturbances
  • mixed disturbance of emotions and conduct
  • unspecified
Adjustment disorders are very common and can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, or lifestyle. By definition, an adjustment disorder is short-lived, unless a person is faced with a chronic recurring crisis (such as a child who is repeatedly abused). In such cases, the adjustment disorder may last more than six months. Causes and symptoms
An adjustment disorder occurs when a person can't cope with a stressful event and develops emotional or behavioral symptoms. The stressful event can be anything: it might be just one isolated incident, or a string of problems that wears the person down. The stress might be anything from a car accident or illness, to a divorce, or even a certain time of year (such as Christmas or summer).

What is an adjustment disorder and how does it occur?
    There are six major adjustment disorders:
  • Adjustment disorder with depressed mood;
  • Adjustment disorder with anxiety;
  • Adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed mood;
  • Adjustment disorder with disturbance of conduct;
  • Adjustment disorder with mixed disturbance of emotions and conduct;
  • Adjustment disorder unspecified.
What are the characteristics associated with an adjustment disorder?
A person with adjustment disorder often experiences feelings of depression or anxiety or combined depression and anxiety. As a result, that person may act out behaviorally against the "rules and regulations" of family, work, or society. In some people, an adjustment disorder may manifest itself in such behaviors as skipping school, unexpected fighting, recklessness, or legal problems. Other people, however, instead of acting out, may tend to withdraw socially and isolate themselves during their adjustment problems. Still others may not experience behavioral disturbances, but will begin to suffer from physical illness. If someone is already suffering from a medical illness, that condition may worsen during the time of the adjustment disorder. People in the midst of adjustment disorders often do poorly in school or at work. Very commonly they begin to have more difficulty in their close, personal relationships.
Listed below are some of the characteristics associated with adjustment disorders:

Healthinmind
Mental Health Disorders Adjustment Disorders Adjustment disorders (ADs) are a frequent diagnosis in the clinical field. ADs are exaggerated responses to identifiable stressors. These responses may be in the form of emotional symptoms (depressed mood, crying, hopelessness, nervousness, etc.) or behavioral symptoms (truancy in children, vandalism, fighting, etc.). The stressors that lead to ADs are the same sorts that lead to problems in livingmarital discord or breakup, the loss of a loved one, relocation, finances, parental rejection, work, substance abuse, and so on. The person with AD reacts more intensely and over a longer period than normal. This reaction may be because the person is naturally vulnerable or is in a vulnerable stage at the time, or it may be for a different reason altogether. A person should be diagnosed with an AD only if he or she returns to normal or near-normal within 6 months after the stressor stops. Also, AD symptoms must begin within 3 months of the occurrence of the stressor. As with other diagnosable mental disorders, AD must produce significant impairment in some aspect of life, or distress severe enough to merit clinical attention. The stressor cannot be the recent death of a loved one, unless the symptoms are so severe or are lasting so long that it is beyond what would be considered normal bereavement.

Adjustment disorder (AD) is a stress-related, short-term, nonpsychotic disturbance. Persons with AD are often viewed as disproportionately overwhelmed or overly intense in their responses to given stimuli. The disorder is time-limited, and symptoms lessen upon removal of the stressor or when new adaptation occurs. AD is considered one of the subthreshold disorders, which are less well defined and share characteristics of other diagnostic groups. Subthreshold disorders fall between defined disorders and problem level (V Code) diagnoses (Strain, 1998). Subthreshold disorders allow for the "classification of early or temporary states when the clinical picture is vague and indiscreet and yet the morbid state is more than expected in a normal reaction" (Strain, 1998). Because of insufficient behavioral criteria for patients with AD, reliability and validity of this disorder remain problematic. Diagnosis is constructed to allow for the classification of psychiatric conditions that are clinically significant but do not meet major criteria for major syndromes. In 1998, Strain et al asserted that the diagnostic construct for patients with AD is "clinically significant and deemed to be in excess of a normal reaction to the stressor in question, and not solely the result of a psychosocial problem (V Code) requiring medical attention."

Adjustment Disorders
What is an adjustment disorder?
An adjustment disorder is defined as an emotional or behavioral reaction to an identifiable stressful event or change in a person's life that is considered maladaptive or somehow not an expected healthy response to the event or change. This reaction occurs within three months of the identified stressful event or change happening. The identifiable stressful event or change in the life of a child or adolescent may be a family move, parental divorce or separation, the loss of a pet, birth of a brother or sister, to name a few. What causes adjustment disorders?
Adjustment disorders are a reaction to stress. There is not a single direct cause between the stressful event and the reaction. Children and adolescents vary in their temperament, past experiences, vulnerability, and coping skills, and as such some are more susceptible than others. Their developmental stage and the capacity of their support system to meet their specific needs related to the stress are factors that may contribute to their reaction to a particular stress. Stressors also vary in duration, intensity, and effect. No evidence is available to suggest a specific biological factor that causes adjustment disorders. Who is affected by adjustment disorders?

Adjustment Disorders Adjustment Disorders are conditions with clinically significant emotional or behavioral symptoms which are in response to identifiable psychosocial stress. Examples could include the ending of a romantic relationship, going off to school, retirement, becoming a parent, financial difficulties, or marital problems. The stressor can recur periodically or be continuous. These include seasonal business downturns or living in a high crime area. The stressor might effect only one individual, a particular family, or an entire community as with a natural disaster. The symptoms of Adjustment Disorders develop within 3 months of the onset of the stress. The reaction is characterized by distress in excess of that that would be expected given the nature of the stressor, or by significant impairment in social or occupational functioning. The use of the diagnosis Adjustment Disorder is generally reserved for conditions lasting less than six months from the onset of the stress; however if the stressor or its consequences are enduring the diagnosis is used for longer periods.
