Visual Agnosia
These two figures illustrate the drawing abilities of two agnosic patients. In both cases, the patient was asked to copy pictures; in one case, this was a rather complex picture of a church, and in the other case, they were simpler pictures, though still containing a good deal of detail. These figures illustrate two points. First, these patients can copy drawings pretty well that means that they can SEE the details in the pictures (so, for example, visual agnosia is not due to poor acuity). Second, although the patients copied the pictures, the patients could not IDENTIFY the pictures. For example, one patient misidentified the picture of the bird as a tree trunk.
In agnosia, most visual capabilities are spared (e.g., colour perception and motion perception), but the patient cannot identify objects based on visual information. The ability to interpret form is impaired selectively. Back to Chapter 4 notes Back to PSY280F Homepage

Psychologist explores bizarre tricks of the damaged brain James Meek, science correspondent Saturday February 2, 2002 The Guardian They walk among us, apparently well and ordinary, but their world is an adventure full of people, places, and things they know but cannot recognise by sight. They are people with visual agnosia, the product of a damaged brain following a stroke or head injury. A Cambridge neuropsychologist, Roz McCarthy, is to make short films illuminating the perspective of the visual agnosia sufferer, many of whom cannot recognise the faces of friends and family.

In some cases the term does not distinguish between a CNS cause or a peripheral or neuromuscular cause. Terms that are primarily psychiatric diagnoses are not included, although it should be noted that some of these, i.e., obsessive-compulsive disorder can occur after specific brain trauma. Also note that not all deficits have a specific name.
AGNOSIA is the most general term used in describing a loss of ability to recognize objects, people, sounds, shapes, or smells. Usually classified according to the sense or senses affected (hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch). It can be described in general terms as the inability to attach appropriate meaning to objective sense-data. It is usually caused by brain injury due to trauma, stroke and/or tumor. Note that sometimes related deficits occur, such as agraphia with alexia
At the next lower level of generalization the terms aphagia, anomia, apraxia

      AGNOSIA
a failure or deficit in recognizing objects
    Introduction
A number of perceptual disturbances can result from damage to the brain. The focus will be primarily on disruptions in the visual sense, but perceptual disturbances can occur in the other senses as well. Perceptual distrubances in vision indicate that color, motion, form, location, and object recognition are all processed by separate but interacting modules in the brain. When one or more of these modules are impacted by brain damage, but the others are spared, a dissociation can result, leaving the person with peculiar perceptual impairments, some of which we will explore in the links and text below.
    I would recommend that you:
1.Review basic brain anatomy associated with the visual system.
2.Familiarize yourself with some of the specific disturbances in visual perception that can result from brain damage.
3.Gain an appreciation for the impact such impairments can have on people's lives.
4.Understand how these perceptual disturbances support the idea that different aspects of visual perception are handled by different modules within the brain.
