Allergies
Index to this page Immunologists, as well as the general public, use the term allergy in several different ways. I shall define it thus: An allergy is a harmful immune response elicited by an antigen that is not itself intrinsically harmful. Examples:
  • The windblown pollen released by orchard grass has no effect on me but produces a violent attack of hay fever (known to physicians as allergic rhinitis ) in my wife.
  • She, on the other hand, can safely handle the leaves of poison ivy while if I do so, I break out in a massive skin rash a day or two later.
Antigens that trigger allergies are often called allergens
Four different immune mechanisms can result in allergic responses.
1. Immediate Hypersensitivities.
These occur quickly after exposure to the allergen. They are usually mediated by antibodies of the IgE class. Examples: Go to discussion
2. Antibody-Mediated Cytotoxicity
Cell damage caused by antibodies directed against cell surface antigens. Hence a form of

November 2002 Air Particles We Breathe Asthma and Allergy "triggers" Outdoor Air, Indoor Air and Air-Conditioning Trigger Controls ... Help With Treatment Decisions
AIR PARTICLES WE BREATHE Many particles of different types and sizes are carried in the air we breathe. Some large particles may settle on the walls and furniture in your home. Other large particles are removed by your nose and mouth when you inhale. Smaller particles are breathed deep into the lungs. Asthma may be triggered by both the large and small particles. Some air particles come from the indoors. Others are carried in the outdoor air. Outdoor particles come into your home through windows, doors, and heating systems. For most people, the indoor air particles cause no problems. But people with allergic symptoms including asthma can have problems, right in their own home. ASTHMA AND ALLERGY "TRIGGERS" If you or someone you know have allergic symptoms or asthma, you are sensitive to "triggers," including particles carried in the air. These "triggers" can set off a reaction in your lungs and other parts of your body. Triggers can be found indoors or outdoors. They can be simple things like:

    Seeing Your Immune System

    Basics of the Immune System

    Components of the immune system
... Shop or Compare Prices Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system . It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body. To understand the power of the immune system, all that you have have to do is look at what happens to anything once it dies. That sounds gross, but it does show you something very important about your immune system. When something dies its immune system (along with everything else) shuts down. In a matter of hours the body is invaded by all sorts of bacteria, microbes, parasites... None of these things are able to get in when your immune system is working, but the moment your immune system stops the door is wide open. Once you die it only takes a few weeks for these organisms to completely dismantle your body and carry it away, until all that's left is a skeleton. Obviously your immune system is doing something amazing to keep all of that dismantling from happening when you are alive! The immune system is complex, intricate and interesting. And there are at least two good reasons for you to know more about it. First, it is just plain fascinating to understand where things like fevers, hives, inflammation, etc. come from when they happen inside your own body. You also hear a lot about the immune system in the news as new parts of it are understood and new drugs come on the market - knowing about the immune system makes these news stories understandable. FOOD ALLERGIES
    RARE BUT RISKY
Do you start itching whenever you eat peanuts? Does seafood cause your stomach to churn? Symptoms like these cause millions of Americans to suspect they have a food allergy. But true food allergies affect a relatively small percentage of people: Experts estimate that only 2 percent of adults, and from 2 to 8 percent of children, are truly allergic to certain foods. Food allergy is different from food intolerance, and the term is sometimes used in a vague, all-encompassing way, muddying the waters for people who want to understand what a real food allergy is. "Many people who have a complaint, an illness, or some discomfort attribute it to something they have eaten. Because in this country we eat almost all the time, people tend to draw false associations between food and illness," says Dean Metcalfe, M.D., head of the Mast Cell and Physiology Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
    ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCEDIFFERENT PROBLEMS
The difference between an allergy and an intolerance is how the body handles the offending food. In a true food allergy, the body's immune system recognizes a reaction-provoking substance, or allergen, in the foodusually a proteinas foreign and produces antibodies to halt the "invasion." As the battle rages, symptoms appear throughout the body. The most common sites are the mouth (swelling of the lips), digestive tract (stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea), skin (hives, rashes or eczema), and the airways (wheezing or breathing problems). People with allergies must avoid the offending foods altogether.

    54. Dog Food Allergies- Home Made Dog Food Recipes For Dogs With Food Allergies
Owner of West Highland White and Cairn terriers offers information on homemade diets for dogs with food allergies.
    http://www.thelittlefoxes.net/
Does your dog have Food Allergies?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend. West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months.
Food Allergies? After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile. I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

    55. Allergies - Ask The Dietitian
Got questions about Food allergies? With allergies in mind, the best diet to followis one with plenty of carbohydrates and fresh fruits and vegetables.
    http://www.dietitian.com/allergie.html
    Allergies (Food)
Hello, I am wondering which foods, if any, contain antihistamine. I am allergic to ragweed pollen. Sniff!! Sniff!!
The foods we consume do not contain antihistamine. FYI, Antihistamines are prescriptions you can take to interrupt your body's production of histamines in response to allergens in the environment. However, diet can still play an important role in controlling allergic reactions. A healthy, balanced diet that follows the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid is the first key to defending your body against allergic reactions. A healthy body is more resistant to attack, whereas stress, poor diet, insufficient sleep, emotional trauma, and infection can predispose your body to allergic reactions. More specifically, vitamin C and vitamin E can help protect your body. Vitamin C will boost your immune system and is found in citrus foods such as oranges, grapefruit, orange juice, grapefruit juice, green peppers and many beverages. Vitamin C acts similar to an antihistamine. Vitamin E is found in plant oils and green, leafy vegetables. With allergies in mind, the best diet to follow is one with plenty of carbohydrates and fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully the next frost will bring you relief from your allergies!
