http://www.wonderpuppy.net/canwehelp/allergy.htm
Allergies to Your Pet In some situations, allergies to your pet can be controlled. Be very careful with asthmatic children though, you might need to find your pet a new home rather than risk your child's health and life, depending of the severity of the allergy. For less serious allergies there are some possible solutions. First and foremost, is keeping your pet clean. You may be lucky enough to have the kind of dog that has a kinder coat for the allergic, such as a poodle. No matter what kind of pet, keeping him clean and groomed, and keeping your living quarters clean will help. It may be possible to live with an allergic pet by separating the pet from the allergic person, such as never allowing the pet into the allergic person's bedroom. Check into the vacuum cleaners with the special HEPA filters too, and use them often. There is also a special product you can use on your pets: From Noofies:
Allerpet-C for cats and Allerpet-D for dogs has helped many allergic friends keep their animals. It's available at pet stores (sometimes the smaller mom-n-pop places are better for this than national chains) and at some vet's offices. It's a liquid - you moisten a paper towel or washcloth with this liquid and wipe your pet down with it once a week. It neutralizes the allergens on the pet's skin and fur. It takes about 3 weeks for it to reach peak effectiveness. It's truly a miracle for some!
Ed. note: Their site says once a week and the bottle probably does too, but KLynn says: "I've seen several articles on this now that say the pet has to be washed/wiped down once a day for it to be effective. That is because the allergen on cats rebuilds to it's original level every 24 hours."

Von Pirquet used the term to describe an altered reaction he had observed in patients, which he put down to the influence of external factors, an allergen , on the immune system. Allergies are hypersensitivity reactions of the immune system to specific substances called allergens (such as pollen stings drugs , or food ) that, in most people, result in no

    Non-Irritating, Fragrance-Free, Sensitive Skin Products
When I was blessed with my daughter Taylor, as an infant she developed some very bad dry skin patches and eczema. My pediatrician explained to me that the fragrances in baby washes were irritating her skin and suggested using fragrance free products. But trying to find these products proved almost impossible. So my husband Todd and I decided we had to come up with our own. Working with a botanical chemist, we developed these all natural fragrance-free, nonirritating sensitive skin products to sooth and calm our baby's sensitive skin. We researched many different botanicals, including Chamomile, Calendula and Uncaria Tomentosa, to create our own special blends. We wanted to make these products available to others, so we created this site to offer you our safe, soothing washes, and to create an information resource for other parents. Please use our site to look for or to share information about dealing with your child's sensitive skin. -Karen Russo

    Allergies
*Special Note* Allergy is probably the most complicated topic in the Quick Care Self-Care Advisory. Below is a very general overview of only the simplest, most common allergy problems and treatments. Quick Care strongly advises that you consult a physician if you're not sure whether your symptoms are allergic, or if non-prescription treatment doesn't work well. Many more prescription options exist beyond the products recommended here. Allergies are simply your body's immune system making a big deal out of nothing. A harmless substance called an allergen (like pollen or mold) comes into contact with immune cells in your skin (external skin, or membrane skin covering the eyes, inner nose and sinuses, throat, or lungs). When the allergen touches these special immune cells (called mast cells), those cells see the harmless particle as a dangerous foreign invader. Mast cells then release damaging chemicals like histamine to "kill" the invader. Unfortunately, this just causes you harm, and doesn't hurt the pollen or mold in the least.
When histamine is released it causes swelling, itching, and mucus production. Within minutes these cause allergy symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, cough (or wheeze in asthma) and itching of the nose, eyes, and throat. Some chemicals released by the mast cells attract other immune cells. These other cells also release damaging substances, which continue the allergic symptoms for hours or days.

2/8/2003: The forum is again up and running. I'm still working on customizing it a bit. If you encounter any problems, please email me ! The bookstore is now running on a nifty script, and I've added a search box to the bottom of the bookstore pages. 2/2/2003: I'm afraid the posts in the forum are lost. I worked all day to try to salvage them, but I can't access the database and I'm frankly fed up with my old web host for putting me in this position. My web design associate and I are working on setting up a new forum on the host we use for our business sites, which has proven itself over the last 2 years to be stable and dependable. 1/13/2003: I find myself in one of the worst health crises of my life in the middle of my web host making improvements that have broken most of the resources on this site as well as taking the site down for several days. My family and I have become sicker and sicker over the last 2 months from living in a mold-infested apartment. These site problems have hit me in the middle of dealing with uncomfortable health problems like asthma, bronchitis, headaches, hives and edema of the hands and feet, not just in me but in my entire family. I apologize for the non-working parts of the site and promise to fix everything as soon as we have completed our move, which won't happen soon enough! Michelle BOOKSTORE

always a problem if you have eczema. What is Eczema? Eczema is a term used for a group of skin conditions having several things in common: dryness, itching, inflammation and thickening of skin, and recurrence. See the table below for descriptions of the usual types. Type Location Symptoms Appearance
Atopic dermatitis (common in kids with allergies or asthma, often gone by adulthood) See body map Itching Thickened, red, dry skin; sometimes crusty and oozing. Contact dermatitis (skin allergy or sensitivity to a substance) See body map Itching, dry skin Dry, thickened, cracked skin. Hand dermatitis (usually caused by irritants) Hands, sides of fingers Itchy, dry, painful; sometimes small blisters at sides of fingers Dry, red, skin; sometimes cracked and bleeding. Dry (chapped) skin Backs of hands, lower legs, or entire body None or sometimes itching Scaly, flaky; not thickened. Sometimes cracked if severe. What Causes It? do The Itch/Scratch Cycle Characteristic sites of atopic dermatitis. Scratching can actually trigger eczematous rashes. Initial mild itching makes you want to scratch, of course. But scratching damages the skin, worsens inflammation, irritates surface nerves, and leads to even more intense itching than you had before. This cycle aggravates and prolongs all of these rashes. In fact some eczematous rashes completely disappear without any treatment if you just stop scratching.
