Crockett AJ, Cranston JM, Moss JR, Alpers JH ABSTRACT Order full review View and/or submit comments What's new in this issue Search abstracts ... About The Cochrane Library A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 08 June 2000. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Domiciliary oxygen therapy has become one of the major forms of treatment for hypoxaemic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Objectives: To determine the effect of domiciliary oxygen therapy on survival and quality of life in patients with COPD. Search strategy: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were identified using the Cochrane Airways Group COPD register using the search terms: home OR domiciliary AND oxygen. Selection criteria: Any RCT in patients with hypoxaemia and COPD that compared long term domiciliary or home oxygen therapy with a control treatment. Data collection and analysis: Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers.

Epilepsy A to Z: A Glossary of Epilepsy Terminology
Peter W. Kaplan, M.D.
Pierre Loiseau, M.D.
Robert S. Fisher, M.D., Ph.D. Pierre Jallon, M.D. "...this book is ideal for medical students, nurses, social workers, neuropsychologists, residents, and fellows rotating on a neurology service or epilepsy ward, and should be carried in a labcoat pocket..." Epilepsia This book will allow health care personnel and individuals with seizure disorders a convenient way to find brief answers to questions that arise regarding epilepsy. To this end, all major terms used in epilepsy have been arranged alphabetically and annotated with comments. The intended level of detail is intermediate between a dictionary definition and a textbook discussion. The student should be able to gather a 'nugget' of information pertaining to a phrase or topic, together with citations to further source material. Since this is a compendium, rare and common conditions are represented. Extensive cross-referencing has been used so the reader can easily find a subject. For example, a febrile seizure is cross-referenced under “Convulsions, (see also Febrile convulsions; Neonatal (S),” “Seizure, febrile (see Febrile seizure),” as well as “Febrile convulsions, seizure.” The text phrase “see...” indicates that “...” is considered a relative synonym. The text phrase “see also...” suggests a related but not identical topic. For brevity, (S) denotes “seizure” and (E) “epilepsy.” Naturally. these two terms are employed frequently.

    Cannibalism holdswarning of mad cow:
By eating their dead, a remote Pacific tribe hoped to become immortal.
Instead it cursed the living with a horrifying brain disease.
June 3, 2001 The Ottawa Citizen by Mark Kennedy For generations, the Fore tribe in the remote mountains of Papua New Guinea held lavish mortuary feasts to commemorate the death of one of their relatives. But it was a feast with a twist: They ate the deceased. The ritual would begin as the Fore women scooped the brains from the skull of the cadaver. They then wiped the liquid and tissue all over their own bodies, leaving it in their hair and skin for weeks. Great fires were built to cook the body. The men of the villages who were accorded a higher status than women ate the best meat, the muscle. But there was plenty left over. Nothing was thrown away. The women and young children ate the brain and offal. The organs, even the feces, were all eaten. The bones were baked for weeks, hammered to a fine dust and sprinkled over vegetables. Everyone was eaten; only those with diseases like leprosy or dysentery were shunned. The dead lived on forever, quite literally consumed by their loving relatives, who themselves would later be eaten by the tribe. It was a cannibalistic ritual born out of love and respect. But it spawned a killer disease called kuru that nearly brought the tribe to the brink of extinction. At some point, probably around 1915, someone in the tribe had developed a genetic mutation in their body.
