Perhaps the most important thing an Assisted Living Facility offers is freedom. Freedom from the worries and dangers of solitary living. Freedom from apartment life; from the necessity to shop, cook and clean house. Freedom to come and go as one pleases in an atmosphere that is warm, friendly and secure, knowing someone is always at hand if help is needed. Birchwood guests are housed in brick residences set on estate-like grounds accented by shaded walks, a small lake, rolling lawns, rock gardens and fountains. Assisted Living accommodations at Birchwood are in attractive buildings on a beautiful landscaped estate.

Arthur Woods In episode 10 of the original Star Trek series, ‘Dagger of the mind,’ which first aired 11/31/1966, the captain and crew of the Enterprise pay a visit to the Tantalus Penal Colony. There they find Dr. Tristan Adams, the Colony director, utilizing a brainwashing device, a neural neutralizer, to control both inmates and staff. The mad doctor convinces Captain Kirk to try the machine. The captain sits in a chair and the machine works his brain with a horrifying futuristic sound: WWWRRRRR. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common causes of the loss of mental function known broadly as dementia . This type of dementia proceeds in stages, gradually destroying memory, reason, judgment, language, and eventually the ability to carry out even the simplest of tasks. These characteristic symptoms acquired a name in the early part of the 20th century when Alois Alzheimer, a German physician, described the signs of the disease in the brain. Alzheimer had a patient in her fifties who suffered from what seemed to be a mental illness. But when she died in 1906, an autopsy revealed dense deposits, now called neuritic plaques , outside and around the nerve cells in her brain. Inside the cells were twisted strands of fiber, or

alzheimers. The long goodbye. A page by and for the caregivers. I read everyweb page, every book and every article written on dementia or alzheimers.
    http://members.tripod.com/alzheimers1/
Alzheimers The long goodbye A page by and for the caregivers General Information Helpful Sites New Trials Sign up by March 25th There have been Visitors to this site When my mother was first diagnosed with dementia, I started doing research. I read every web page, every book and every article written on dementia or Alzheimers. I became a walking reference book on this terrible disease. Friends learned to avoid mentioning my mother or Alzheimer's as I would launch into an eye glazing monologue of statistics, but after all the facts were read and digested, I was left with the undeniable facts. My mother had a progressive, degenerative disease that would rob her of her memory and dignity and would ultimately lead to her death. There was no cure. There was no hope. That was three years ago, and I found that although scientific information is important in understanding this illness, it doesn't help the caretaker in the day to day job of caring for their loved ones. I found that what I needed was practical information. Information that could only come from other caretakers who had, "been there and done that." ALFS assisted Living Facilities My mother had been living with my widowed brother for the last three years but as he started declining from colon cancer, it became imperative that I find another place for her. Since we lived on a canal and were only a half block from a major highway, I was always a nervous wreck even when she visited as she was always trying to get "home." So, reluctantly, I concluded that the safest and best place was a "home." Since mother was continent and able to dress and feed herself, an Assisted Living Facility, ALF, was the best choice. I found one that I felt was above average. It was just two years old and the attendants seemed warm and caring and it had an Alzheimer's wing. I moved mother in at the end of March, 2002 and for a while was very pleased with her care.

    http://id.mind.net/community/alzheimers/about.htm
Its cause is unknown and it has no cure.
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. People with AD experience gradual memory loss, disorientation, personality changes, and an inability to perform basic everyday tasks. They also experience loss of language, learning and communication skills. Gradually over time, AD strips away all sense of self until there is only a shell.
AD affects an estimated 4 million Americans, over 5,000 in southern Oregon, and is the fourth leading cause of death among adults.
There is no single diagnostic test for Alzheimer's. It is essential that anyone suspected of having AD secure a complete medical and neurological evaluation to rule out any other possible cause of symptoms. At present, the only way to confirm the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is to examine brain tissue under a microscope during autopsy.
Although AD is the most common dementing illness which results in a loss of remembering, thinking and resoning skills, there are other related disorders which cause dementia including multiple strokes, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

In advanced stages of the disease, all memory and mental functioning may be lost. The condition predominantly affects the cerebral cortex and hippocampus , which atrophy (lose mass, or shrink) as the disease advances. Plaques and Tangles The two most significant physical findings in the cells of brains affected by Alzheimer's disease are neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Another significant factor in AD is the greatly reduced presence of acetylcholine in the cerebral cortex. Acetylcholine is necessary for cognitive function.
