... Hans Stecher The first word we hear from the average person when an individual complains of a massive headache, collapses, and dies in a matter of days is "aneurysm". A relatively common bleed in the third compartment of the brain from which nearly everyone of us has had a friend or relative die. However, according to Dr Azad Esack, a consultant neurologist, there are really four types of Intracranial Bleeds in the head from which bleeding can occur in several areas, so that a patient who collapses and dies from a brain hemorrhage could have suffered from any of the four and not necessarily an aneurysm, which is caused by a rupture of a congenital defect in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. Stress, for instance, can cause a rise in blood pressure which puts pressure on the already weak system and gives rise to this bleed. The "Aneurysm" and "Aterio-Venous Malformation" described as a abnormal collection of blood vessels may both give rise to one of the types, Sub-Arachnoid Bleeding.

News : Aneurysm screen lifesaver Screening men for abdominal aneurysms can cut deaths An MRC funded study has shown that ultrasound screening to diagnose abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), which are potentially fatal balloon-like swellings in the wall of the main artery that runs from the heart through the abdomen, can cut death rates in those screened by around half.
The Multi-centre Aneurysm Screening Study (MASS) at hospitals in Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth (including Hasler Naval Hospital) and Oxford involved 67,000 65-74 year old men, who were divided into two groups; those who were invited to be screened and those who were not.
Ultrasound tests detected 1333 AAAs in the screened group, which suffered 65 aneurysm related deaths compared to 113 AAA deathsin the non-screened control group. The results were published in the Lancet on Friday 15 November 2002.
If an aneurysm ruptures the chances of survival are low, with half the patients never reaching hospital. Currently the only effective treatment is to repair them by surgery and this is usually done when the aneurysm is over 5.5cm in diameter.

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Aneurysms are either congenital or acquired. It is not clear exactly what causes aneurysms. In certain cases (abdominal aortic aneurysms), hypertension is thought to be a contributing factor. Atherosclerotic disease (cholesterol buildup in arteries) may contribute to the formation of certain types of aneurysms. Pregnancy is often associated with the formation and/or rupture of splenic artery aneurysms.

When an aneurysm occurs in the brain, it is called a cerebral aneurysm.
Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Aneurysms in the brain occur when there is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel. They may occur as a congenital defect or may develop later in life.
A saccular aneurysm (berry aneurysm) can vary in size from a few millimeters to over a centimeter. Giant berry aneurysms can reach well over 2 cm. The aneurysm resembles a sack of blood attached to one side of the blood vessel by a narrow neck. These are more common in adults. Multiple berry aneurysms are not unusual. About 25% of patients have more than one aneurysm. They can occur in any blood vessel which supplies the brain, but they are most often seen in the large arteries at the base of the brain. Berry aneurysms are associated with polycystic kidney disease and coarctation of the aorta . Rarely, berry aneurysm can run in families.

Aortic Aneurysm
Surgery can stop this silent danger
"Abdominal aortic aneurysm" isn't a condition you hear about everyday. Yet two Mayo Clinic studies document a three-fold increase over the past 40 years. The increase may be partly due to the upsurge in smoking since World War II. Also, as more people live longer, this type of aneurysm occurs more frequently. About 15,000 Americans die each year from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms. Compared with the half million who die annually of heart attacks, the number of deaths due to aneurysms is small. But it's scary that an abdominal aneurysm may rupture and cause sudden death. If detected early, however, surgery eliminates this silent danger 95 percent of the time.
A weakened artery
An aneurysm is a bulging or ballooning of an artery wall. It usually occurs when the arterial wall becomes weak or damaged by accumulation of cholesterol-containing fatty deposits (atherosclerosis). Other factors that contribute to weakening of the arterial wall are:
  • High blood pressure
    Smoking
    Male gender
    Age 55 or older
Family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Aneurysm: a sac formed by localized dilatation of an artery or vein Thoracic aortic aneurysm: In this disorder, the ascending, transverse, or descending part of the aorta widens abnormally. A dissecting aneurysm indicates a hemorrhagic separation in the aortic wall, usually within the medial layer. A saccular aneurysm describes an outpouching of the arterial wall, with a narrow neck. A fusiform aneurysm is a spindle shaped enlargement encompassing the entire aortic circumference. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are most common in men between ages 50 and 70. Some aneurysms progress to serious and eventually lethal complications. Cause: Usually this disorder occurs a s a consequence of atherosclerosis. Other possible causes include infection of the aortic arch and descending segments, congenital defects, trauma, and syphilis. Intimal tear in the ascending aorta as well as hypertension can initiate a dissecting aneurysm. Symptoms: Pain
In a dissecting aneurysm, pain usually occurs suddenly, with a tearing or ripping sensation in the thorax or anterior chest. Pain may extend to the neck, shoulder, lower back, or abdomen but rarely reaches the jaw and arms. Temporary loss of consciousness (syncope)
Pallor
Sweating
Shortness of breath
Tachycardia
Cyanosis
Leg weakness
Transient paralysis Effects of saccular or fusiform aneurysms varies according to the aneurysm's size and location and degree of compression, distortion, or erosion of surrounding structures.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
A
bdominal Aortic aneurysm is caused by weakening of the main artery in the abdomen. The weakening is caused by deposition of cholesterol and calcium in the wall of the artery and the weakened artery dilates like a balloon. This process is gradual and often very slow and may take several years. The dilated artery often remains undetected due to lack of symptoms. The medical term for the balloon like dilatation is : " Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm" Currently there are nearly 2,000,000 patients suffering from the AAA in the united states.50,000 new cases are detected every year. Rupture of aneurysm and complications related to surgery makes AAA the leading cause of death in in USA . Symptoms : As mentioned previously AAA is detected accidentally in most cases but sometimes back pain is may be a presenting symptoms. People suffering from Vascular disorders , heart disease and high blood pressure and are at high risk for development of AAA. Several members of one family may suffer from this problem.

Aneurysm An aneurysm is a place in a blood vessel where the wall is thin and can rupture due to blood pressure. If the aneurysm ruptures circulation is disrupted and the problem can be severe depending on the location of the aneurysm. The best prevention of aneurysm is not smoking , reducing blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, reducing stress , if overweight losing weight, and good nutritional supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids. ... more Nutrient / Supplement Importance
Helpful notes vitamin B complex, inositol, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E all serve to help stabilize blood pressure and help with aneurysm issues. A daily supplement provides nutrients needed for good general health and well being. Carnitine helps in the transporting of long chain fatty acids which aides in prevention of heart disease, aneurysm, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular disease. Great when combined with a omega fatty acid and flax seed supplement. (see Advanced Omega below) Coenzyme Q10 increases oxygenation to the heart and has been shown to prevent recurrences in people who have had a heart problems including attack.

Coiling
This procedure involves the use of a soft platinum micro-coil that is inserted in a micro catheter through the femoral artery and threaded through the arteries and cerebral vessels to reach the aneurysm. After being properly positioned, the coil is released into the aneurysm by a very low voltage current. Once detached and in place, the coil fills the aneurysm, isolating it from the circulation and thereby reducing the pressure and the likelihood of a rupture and a hemorrhagic stroke.
Balloon assisted coiling
This procedure involves coiling as above in combination with a tiny balloon catheter to aid in holding the coil in place.
Combination stent and coiling
This procedure involves coiling as above in combination with a stent (a small flexible cylindrical mesh tube) that provides a scaffold for the coil mass. This technique is very important on the management of wide neck and fusiform aneurysms.

An aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of an artery. Aneurysms most often occur in the aorta, the large artery that distributes blood to all of the body's vital organs except for the lungs . One of the most common locations along the aorta for an aneurysm to develop is within the abdomen. So-called abdominal aortic aneurysms are often caused by arteriosclerosis, a condition that effects the elasticity and thickness of the aortic wall. People with high blood pressure are prone to arteriosclerosis and should therefore be aware of their increased risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The primary danger associated with all aneurysms, including the abdominal aortic, is the chance that the aneurysm may burst. If an aneurysm bursts, the victim is in grave danger from the subsequent internal
