    Definition
    • Anosmia is the loss of the sense of smell. Do not confuse this term with, insomnia , which is loss of sleep.
    MSDS Relevance
Anosmia can be fatal. How? Certain toxic chemicals have strong detectable odors at low levels. But at higher levels, these saturate your smell receptors ("olfactory fatigue ") and you can no longer smell the material. For example, hydrogen sulfide, H S, has the distinctive odor of rotten eggs at or below 10 parts per million (ppm) in air . If you were exposed to an H S leak and the concentration went above 10 ppm, you might be lulled into thinking that the leak had stopped because you could not smell it anymore. Unfortunately, H S can be fatal at concentrations of several hundred ppm. If a substance can cause anosmia, do not rely on the odor to detect it!

What are the causes of Anosmia ? Anosmia occurs from either an obstruction in the nose or nerve damage. An obstruction prevents odors from reaching the delicate nerve fibers of the nose. They could be caused due to natural aging process or most commonly due to common cold. They can also follow a head injury or an acute or chronic attack of allergies. Many medications may change or decrease the ability to detect odors. The sense of smell is often lost with disorders like tumours, Nasal, sinus or surgery of the brain. It may also be due to zinc deficiency. Tobacco smoking is the most concentrated form of pollution that most people will ever be exposed to. It impairs the ability to identify odors. Hormonal disturbances or dental problems are also a cause. Anosmia can occur as a part of other loss of function of the brain.

What is being said about anosmia in the media? Find out! Or read some quotations concerning anosmia. Here are a few websites on anosmia: huge pet peeve of mine! I’m not sure how old I was before I discovered that I can’t smell. When I say that I honestly believed, as a child, that the dead air in my nose was normal and I was, in fact, smelling things, it doesn’t seem to make sense to anybody who isn’t a congenital anosmic. I think I also went through periods when I realized I could not smell, but I blamed myself; ie, I thought that I wasn’t trying hard enough, or I just wasn’t getting the hang of it. After I figured out that I really couldn’t smell, and it wasn’t a matter of me being stupid or slow to catch on, it took me a few years before I finally came out of the closet as an anosmic, and it was only around 1999 when I learned the medical term for being unable to smell. A lot of people aren’t aware that this condition exists. Other people refuse to believe that I genuinely can’t smell anything. One person actually said to me, “Try harder!” This strikes me as being utterly ridiculous. It is one thing for a little kid to think that she needs to try harder to learn how to smell; it is another thing for an adult to perpetrate this belief.

Los Angeles Magazine
January 1, 2002 ELECTRONIC-NOSE TECHNOLOGY is not bionic, nor is it meant to be. For the small number of Americans born every year with anosmia—the total absence of smell—there is no nasal equivalent of a hearing aid or LASIK surgery. Those suffering from the disease, which runs in families, can’t hook themselves up to an e-nose; they often face both their parents’ shame and their friends’ incredulity. Since smell accounts for as much as 90 percent of what we perceive as taste, an anosmic experiences the world without two of the body’s five routes of input and is frequently oblivious to impending danger. “As a child I fell asleep while cooking supper and was awakened by the neighbor—not by the black smoke above my head,” wrote one victim on an Internet bulletin board last year. “Taxidermy gone awry has decomposed in my room, I’ve had food poisoning numerous times, and I’ve been to the hospital more than once because of ammonia poisoning. Having no sense of smell is dangerous in this Western society of ours.” Others may experience anosmia or related disorders at some point during life. Severe head trauma can sever the connection between the olfactory epithelia and bulb. A rare form of brain tumor can press directly on the bulb, causing olfactory hallucinations. Workers in nail salons and other chemically harsh environments sometimes experience hyposmia, a dulling of smell, as do smokers and cocaine users. German physiologist Ernst Weber damaged the receptors in his nose when he bent over and poured perfume into his nostrils in an effort to prove that only gases, not liquids, can be smelled. (He was wrong.)

Willard C. Harrill, M.D. Chemosensory disorders affect approximately two million adults in the U.S. It was found that from 1975 to 1976, over 500,000 visits to physician's offices were for evaluation of possible chemosensory dysfunction. Not until this past decade, has a focused, scientific effort been directed to the study of chemosensory disorders and their diagnosis and treatment. The NIH, in 1979, funded the establishment of several chemosensory research centers. It is through the efforts of these centers that a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of smell disorders have been obtained. The role of MRI is more limited in its usefulness. Its role should be limited to the evaluation of intracranial processes that are not easily evaluated with CT scans, such as Multiple Sclerosis or when tumor extension into the cranial cavity, especially in the region of the skull base. Other than these specific indications, the routine use of these expensive diagnostic tests has an extremely low cost-benefit ratio and should not be used. The cornerstone for the diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction is olfactory testing and taste testing. The discrimination of taste from smell dysfunction is important because the two senses are integrally related in their ability to providing chemosensory information.

Definition
The term anosmia means lack of the sense of smell. It may also refer to a decreased sense of smell. Ageusia, a companion word, refers to a lack of taste sensation. Patients who actually have anosmia may complain wrongly of ageusia, although they retain the ability to distinguish salt, sweet, sour, and bitterhumans' only taste sensations.
Description
Of the five senses, smell ranks fourth in importance for humans, although it is much more pronounced in other animals. Bloodhounds, for example, can smell an odor a thousand times weaker than humans. Taste, considered the fifth sense, is mostly the smell of food in the mouth. The sense of smell originates from the first cranial nerves (the olfactory nerves), which sit at the base of the brain's frontal lobes, right behind the eyes and above the nose. Inhaled airborne chemicals stimulate these nerves. There are other aberrations of smell beside a decrease. Smells can be distorted, intensified, or hallucinated. These changes usually indicate a malfunction of the brain.
Causes and symptoms
The most common cause of anosmia is nasal occlusion caused by rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal membranes). If no air gets to the olfactory nerves, smell will not happen. In turn, rhinitis and

However, many people, including myself, do not have the ability to smell. Some people are born with anosmia. Those who are born with anosmia usually have some sort of midline defect that doesn't allow the olfactory system to develop. Some people acquire anosmia due to cancer, infection, or injury to the olfactory system. Some people lose their sense of smell due to a blow to the head. Some people lose their sense of smell for no reason. Most people will never gain the ability to smell while some may regain it. What are the advantages of not being able to smell? Not able to smell foul odors, such as dirty diapers What are the disadvantages of not being able to smell? Not being able to smell things that smell good, such as flowers How does the lack of smell affect one's ability to taste?

anosmia the inability to smell smoke, gas, or rotten food, for example, and my anosmic, adolescent sister's greatest concern the inability to detect her own body odor (we have all been enlisted to check her armpits before she heads out to school in the morning). Nevertheless, there are those who contend that the sense of smell, often viewed as a purely aesthetic sense (but likely our most primitive) is almost completely useless in modern western society and that smell is being evolved out of the human race. With much of this in mind, I began video-recording interviews with various anosmic and smelling members of my family about a year ago and have since expanded the project to a more general investigation of how one lives in the absence of, arguably, our most primal, evocative sense. The Anosmia Project will eventually be comprised of 10 2-3 minute "phases." As it happens, one of the most distinctive results of the hijacked planes crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and collapsing them, was the acrid smells that permeated the air in Manhattan which will forever impact on the memory of the event that is, if you could smell it. Of course, there is the eerie visual impact of seeing New Yorkers walking the streets in white dust masks and respirators. But the smell of smoke, jet fuel, gas, and burnt flesh could not be sensed by the majority of people who watched the events unfold on television a kind of anosmia.
