B A C K G R O U N D E R Anthrax

Anthrax is a disease caused by a bacterial infection, most often affecting large herbivores such as cattle, sheep or bison, either wild or domesticated. It is most common in developing countries in Central and South America, Eastern and Southern Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. People most often catch the disease through contact with infected animals or their wool or hides. The bacteria can enter through cuts or scrapes in the skin. This cutaneous form of anthrax causes ulcers and coal-black scabs, which give anthrax its name: anthracis is the Greek word for coal. Anthrax can also be transmitted to people by eating contaminated meat. Intestinal anthrax causes intense pain, bleeding and diarrhea. The anthrax bacteria, Bacillus anthracis , can also form spores that can sometimes be transmitted through the air. The inhaled form of anthrax, also called woolsorters' disease, is much more severe than the cutaneous form and is usually fatal. This is the form that killed a photo editor at the office of a supermarket tabloid in Boca Raton, Florida in October.

Man suspected of having anthrax predicted attack
Harris told talk show Iraqis poised to strike
In this story: February 20, 1998 Web posted at: 10:15 p.m. EST (0315 GMT) LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) A man arrested on charges of possessing what is believed to be the deadly toxin anthrax predicted on a radio talk show the day before his arrest that the United States would be the target of a major biological attack within two years. Tuesday, Larry Wayne Harris, speaking on Talk America Radio Network's "The Buck Stops Here," gave a detailed description of what he said was a plot involving more than 200 "sleeper cells" of Iraqi students poised to unleash anthrax and bubonic plague bacteria on the American people. "The odds of us making it through even the end of this century without a major biological incident are very low," Harris said. Harris, 46, and William Leavitt Jr., 47, were arrested Wednesday night in a Las Vegas suburb after an informant called the FBI to report the two men told him they had anthrax. They are being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

Miltbrand (Anthrax)
Indledende klager patienten over utilpashed, hovedpine, feber og muligvis smerter i brystet.

Within a few weeks of his arrival he learned of people in his squadron becoming seriously ill after taking the anthrax vaccine. The list is as follows: Michelle P. suffered from thyroid damage, an autoimmune disorder, chronic fatigue, and dizziness. She was grounded for several months and recently separated from the Air Force. Bill L. was grounded for several months. After the vaccine, he developed cysts on numerous places on the inside and outside of his body, to include his heart. He has undergone surgery to remove some of the cysts and was hooked up to an IV for six weeks. Jean T. suffered from a widespread rash over most of her body after receiving the vaccine. Jim G. suffered from severe chronic joint pain, thyroid damage, and has an autoimmune disorder. At times he had both of his arms in braces due to the severe joint pain. John S. has an autoimmune disorder, diagnosed after taking the anthrax vaccine.

Iraq denies plot to smuggle anthrax into Britain
Inspectors checking for anthrax March 24, 1998 Web posted at: 11:26 p.m. EST (0426 GMT) LONDON (CNN) The British government told citizens not to panic Tuesday after confirming an intelligence warning of a possible Iraqi anthrax attack, saying there was no imminent or specific threat toward the country. "It is right to take sensible measures. But it is unnecessary to be alarmist," Home Secretary Jack Straw told Parliament. A number of countries have received information about possible Iraqi threats to smuggle deadly anthrax, a poison Iraq is known to have produced, Straw said. "But our information is there is no specific threat to the United Kingdom. There is no evidence to indicate that any attempt has actually been made to smuggle anthrax into this country," he said. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT ANTHRAX PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
October 10, 2001
Q: Is there an approved treatment for anthrax? A: Yes. Three types of antiobiotics are approved for anthrax: ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines (including doxycycline), and penicillins. For people who have been exposed to anthrax but do not have symptoms, 60 days of one of these antibiotics is given to reduce the risk or progression of disease due to inhaled anthrax. Q: Does the government have a plan in place to make Cipro available if there were mass exposure to anthrax? A: Yes. Under emergency plans, the Federal government would ship appropriate antibiotics from its stockpile to wherever they are needed. Q: Should individual consumers ask their physicians to write a prescription for Cipro, so they have it on hand in case it's needed? A: No. Any needed antibiotics from the current stockpile will be made available if they are needed. In the meantime, Cipro should not be prescribed unless there is a clearly indicated need, so that the drug will be available as the need arises for the standard infections for which it is used. Q: What is FDA telling physicians and other health professionals about prescriptions for Cipro?

Since the Gulf War, whenever biological-weapon threats are discussed, Anthrax inevitably tops the list. The reasons are not just alphabetical. Ordinarily a cattle disease, Anthrax is caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . When the bacterium is inhaled, as is likely if terrorists released it into the air, the first symptoms would resemble the common cold, with death quickly following. Antibiotics work if started before symptoms appear - a daunting problem since no widely available test quickly identifies anthrax. Anthrax vaccine is available only to the military. The World Health Organization says an anthrax attack on a city of 5 million could cause 250,000 causalities and 100,000 deaths.
