Appendicitis affects approximately one in 500 children under the age of 14 each year in the United States. It is rare in children under two, but at that age the consequences can be more serious. WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS APPENDICITIS? Appendicitis in a child may be difficult to diagnose because there are so many reasons for abdominal pain, and young children often cannot communicate just how bad the pain is. Appendicitis should be suspected if the pain begins as a dull or vague discomfort near the navel and then sharpens and localizes as it moves toward the lower right section of the abdomen, the site of the inflamed appendix. Within a few hours, the intensifying pain becomes constant and the lower abdomen becomes extremely sensitive to the touch. Symptoms of appendicitis do not follow any set pattern, however. The precise location of the appendix varies from person to person and so will the focus on the pain. Frequently, the pain will be felt in the side, back or anywhere in the lower abdomen.

Appendicitis is an irritation, inflammation, and infection of the appendix (a narrow, hollow tube that branches off the large intestine). The appendix functions as a part of the immune system during the first few years of life. After this time period, the appendix stops functioning and other organs continue helping fight infection. Although the appendix does not seem to serve any purpose, it can become diseased and, if untreated, can burst, causing infection and even death. What causes appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when the interior of the appendix becomes filled with something that causes it to swell, such as mucus, stool, or parasites. The appendix then becomes irritated and inflamed. The blood supply to the appendix is cut off as the swelling and irritation increase. Adequate blood flow is necessary for a body part to remain healthy. When blood flow is reduced, the appendix starts to die. Rupture (or perforation) occurs as holes develop in the walls of the appendix, allowing stool, mucus, and other substances to leak through and get inside the abdomen. An infection inside the abdomen known as peritonitis occurs when the appendix perforates. Appendicitis may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the tube connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked or trapped by stool. Because of the risk of rupture, which may occur as soon as 48 to 72 hours after symptoms begin, appendicitis is considered an emergency and anyone with symptoms needs to see a physician immediately.

How can I tell if he has appendicitis?
At first, appendicitis may seem a lot like stomach flu. The classic symptoms are abdominal pain, fever , and vomiting . (In rare cases, it can also cause diarrhea.) But if children's acetaminophen doesn't reduce his fever and if he can't keep anything down, including water, he may have appendicitis, especially if the stomach pain worsens over a few hours and is located in the lower right quadrant of his abdomen. If your child is old enough to describe his pain, ask him where it hurts. What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is literally an inflammation of the appendix, an organ with no function that is attached to the large intestine. Normally it sits empty, but it can become inflamed if stool or mucus builds up in its opening and causes a bacterial infection. Is it common for children to get appendicitis?

By Michael Woo-Ming, MD, MPH

Appendicitis is perhaps the greatest worry for parents when their child has significant abdominal pain. Working in an urgent care clinic, "Is it an appendicitis?" was probably the most asked question by a concerned parent about a child who was groaning from stomach problems. There are many misconceptions about this disease and it's a constant dilemma to decide if the abdominal pain your child is feeling right now is something that can wait or if they should rush into the emergency room right away.
What Is The Appendix?
The appendix is a cylindrical structure that is found at the end of the small intestine. As far as we know, it has no apparent function in the human body.
What Is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when this structure becomes inflamed and swollen from pus. It's most often seen in the age group of 10 to 30 and is the number one abdominal surgical emergency, with up to 80,000 surgeries performed in the U.S. each year. Preventing the appendix from "bursting" and causing the spread of infection is the reason why proper diagnosis and appropriately timed surgical intervention is paramount. Peritonitis, an inflammation of the abdominal lining, is a life threatening illness that may result without surgical intervention.

Greetings everyone!.. At the request of my dear friend Krispybee, I am writing to discuss my experience with appendicitis and how I cured myself without having to resort to surgery. I am also willing to answer any legitimate questions regarding acupuncture and Oriental medicine in general as I believe educating as many people about the benefits of this ancient art will be helpful to all. I also wish to avoid any ridiculous political discussions regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture versus western medicine. About me. I am a recent graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, receiving a Masters degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine... soon I will be opening a practice in Southern New Mexico. I am an experienced acupuncturist, herbologist, massage therapist, and I teach chi gong, "Chinese yoga", at a cancer rehabilitation resource group as well as a drug addiction rehabilitation program. I am a Taoist and I have a BA in Asian history. What I do intend to explain is simply my experience with appendicitis , basically how it would be approached through TOM, and finally my experiences with our culture and observations and insights gained from going through this process. I would like to explain, that many of even my own peers thought I was completely nuts not to have my appendix taken out. This I am afraid shows the low level of understanding of TOM in our country even among those learning it, and also the tremendous amount of dogmatic power that the medical establishment has managed to create in our culture.

The appendix is a small worm-shaped tube that projects from the large intestine near the point where it joins the small intestine, in the lower right side of your abdomen. It has no known function now, but may have played a role in our ancient ancestors who ate a much higher fiber diet. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, usually requiring surgical treatment. Although the cause of appendicitis is not fully understood, it is thought that a blockage of some kind, inside the appendix, causes the appendix to become inflamed and infected. The blockage may be from a small hard piece of stool plugging the appendix (called a fecolith) or swelling of lymph tissue in the appendix wall (this may be the common cause in children). If the inflammation continues untreated, the appendix wall may rupture and spill bacteria-laden intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity. This, in turn, can lead to 'peritonitis', an inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity. Peritonitis is extremely painful and will make even the toughest patients eventually seek medical help. The most serious outcome of a burst appendix is the release of bacteria and bacterial products into the bloodstream, called bacteremia, which is life-threatening and must be treated immediately. There is no way of preventing appendicitis and to date, the only recognized treatment is an appendectomy, which is the surgical removal of the appendix. Mild cases may settle with antibiotics, but recurrence is common.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a finger-like portion of the large intestine that generally hangs down from the lower right side of the abdomen. Although the appendix does not seem to serve any purpose, it can become diseased and, if untreated, can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the tube connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked or trapped by stool. Because of the risk of rupture, which may happen as soon as 48 to 72 hours after symptoms begin, appendicitis is considered an emergency and anyone with symptoms needs to see a physician immediately.
