Information on supraventricular tachycardia, an arrhythmia disorder of the heart, written by a patient.
http://www.geocities.com/sjt405/SupraVentricularTachycardia.html
Supra Ventricular Tachycardia or SVT What is SVT? How does SVT develop? The electrical system of the heart (conduction system) is a complex network of cells and fibers through which electrical impulses travel at lightening speed through the heart, triggering a heartbeat. The impulses are first sent out by the sinoatrial node (sinus node; S-A node), located in the top of the upper-right chamber of the heart (the right atrium). From there, the impulses spread through the atria and to the atrioventricular node (A-V node), where they are transmitted to the lower chambers of the hearts ventricles via the bundle branches. Once the impulses reach the ventricles, they serve as a set of instructions, causing the chambers to contract and pump out blood in a routine and consistent manner.
If impulses are fired too fast, either from the heart's normal conduction system or from other parts of the heart, the heart will beat too quickly. In many cases, a temporary rapid heartbeat is not medically significant by itself. For instance, sinus tachycardia is a normal response to increased demands on the heart during exercise. However, persistent severe tachycardia can lead to greater damage and heart malfunction and even sudden cardiac death.

Arrhythmia Printable Version (by permission only)
Arrhythmia is an electrical problem that disrupts the heart's natural rhythm. It manifests in two types Tachycardia and Bradycardia. Symptoms that a person might have would be: For Tachycardia arrhythmia (abnormally rapid heart beat) - an abnormal heart beat, palpitations - recurring feelings like a pounding, racing or fluttering, discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath, dizziness or confusions, or sweating. For Bradycardia arrhythmia (abnormally slow heart beat) - loss of consciousness, fatigue, or light headedness. Keeping up a person's potassium, magnesium and calcium balanced is extremely beneficial when trying to regulate the heart beat. Symptoms of a magnesium deficiency are fluttering of the heart or a craving for chocolate. Symptoms of a potassium deficiency are charley horses, high blood pressure or discomfort in chest. Symptoms of a calcium deficiency are menses headaches, or muscle spasms. Balancing minerals is best done with the advice of a competent health practitioner. Along with exercise, herbal regimens that have been used historically for arrhythmia are: Bugleweed extract

Arrhythmia Cardiac arrhythmia are disruptions in the natural rhythm of the heartbeat and is normally caused by improper functioning of the electrical system cells in the heart. There are different kinds of arrhythmias. Palpitations means a feeling of a pounding heartbeat. Tachycardia is an abnormal increase in the resting heartbeat. Bradycardia is the opposite an abnormally slow heart rate. Ectopic beats are premature beats often felt as "skipped beats". Flutter and fibrillation are situations in which the normal steady beating become rapid twitching of the heart muscle. The best prevention of arrhythmia and other cardiovascular problems is not smoking especially cigarettes, reducing high blood pressure , reducing cholesterol levels if you have high cholesterol , reducing stress . People that have obesity/weight problems are more at risk of heart problems including arrhythmia. Dietary changes and good nutritional supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids listed below can help either prevent or heal. Nutrient / Supplement Importance
Helpful notes vitamin B complex, inositol, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E all serve to help lower blood pressure and help with regular heart beat thus good for people who have arrhythmia problems. A daily supplement provides nutrients needed for good general health and well being.

Raytel's 30-Day Arrhythmia Monitoring Service
Intermittent cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) can cause symptoms such as palpitations, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, dizziness and syncope. Many patients who seek medical attention for these conditions typically do not exhibit their symptoms on a daily basis. The intermittent nature of these symptoms has historically made it difficult to accurately document and diagnose the underlying cause of the arrhythmias ( listing of Diagnosis Codes In recent years, 30-day arrhythmia monitoring has proven to be an effective tool for detecting arrhythmias in patients with infrequent symptoms. Unlike Holter Monitoring which is generally used to record cardiac rhythms over a continuous 24 hour period, 30-day arrhythmia monitoring provides a means to monitor the patient over an extended period of time, during which the patient is more likely to experience symptoms.

Arrhythmia page two

by John Douillard, D.C. In Ayurveda, the condition we know as Arrhythmia ( heartbeat irregularity) falls under the general classification Hrdoga (heart disease). Under this general heading, the Ayurvedic texts list the causes of heart disease, they are: Physical exertion, drastic and excessive purgation and enema, anxiety, fear, terror and faulty management of disorders, suppression of vomiting and ama (digestive impurities), reducing and injury - these are causative factors in heart disease. CA.Chik.26.70-73 Although Caraka often speaks in a style unfamiliar to western medicine, a close look at this quote reveals the relevant causes of heart disease and Arrhythmia in our culture. Ayurvedic medicine understood stress to be the cause of all disease some 5000 years ago while it was only in the past year that this concept attained western medical acceptance. They also knew that this stress, be it mental, physical or emotional would lodge toxins deeply into the tissues. Depending on the genetic predisposition (body type) of the individual, a specific disease would manifest. In Caraka, most diseases are prefaced with a list of common stressors that would likely cause a specific disease. In this case, the words, anxiety, terror and fear come close to describing the stressful state many of us currently live. We live in an unprecedented time of excess. Our nervous systems are incessantly pushed to and beyond our limits. In nature, life is peaceful and calm. In our cities life is anything but. The stress we put on ourselves has stripped the peace and calm out of our cells and left them in a constant state of emergency (sympathetic dominance). The autonomic nervous system which includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are directly responsible for the regulation of the heart beat.

    Arrhythmia
    Overview:
    Quick Reference
Reviewed by Dr. James Whynot An interruption in the normal beating rhythm of the heart is called an arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. Almost everyone experiences arrhythmia in the form of a mild palpitation or a skipped heartbeat at some point in his or her life. Arrhythmias are common, especially as you get older, and they affect millions of people. Isolated incidences are usually innocuous, but a physician should look at a recurrent arrhythmia or arrhythmias accompanied by symptoms listed below.
    Detailed Information
Many types of heart disease cause arrhythmia. Coronary artery disease, which can cause a heart attack, produces scar tissue that can disrupt the transmission of electrical signals. Other causes of arrhythmia include congenital heart disease, heart valve disorders , lung disease (smoking, congenital and acquired)and thyroid conditions (both over active and under active thyroid).

    arrhythmia
Arrythmia (without rhythm) refers to irregular heartbeat. There are various types of irregularity possible, resulting from disturbances of the natural pacemaker system of the heart muscle. supraventricular - above the ventricle, or caused by rhythm disturbance in the atria. Or they may be ventricular , caused by problems in the pacemaking center of the heart (the atrioventricular node) or by irritability of the heart muscle itself. Probably the most commonly encountered significant arrhythmias in pediatric medicine are supraventricular arrythmias ( atrial fibrillation ) in very young babies. These children often become ill very suddenly, with symptoms of heart failure (rapid breathing, poor feeding, lethargy) that may mimic severe infection. The heart is beating so rapidly that it cannot fill with blood properly for each pumping stroke, and heart pumping failure results. They typically have very high heart rates in the 280 to 300 beats per minute range. They are treated with drugs and sometimes electroshock to restore normal heart rhythm (cardioversion); this immediately restores proper circulation and the symptoms of heart failure quickly disappear. Recurrences happen but are usually avoided by drug therapy, often until about a year of age when the tendency seems to disappear. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

    THE CONDITION
    Overview of Arrhythmias
An arrhythmia is any kind of abnormal heart rhythm, or heartbeat. A general understanding of how the heart works helps explain the different types of arrhythmias that can occur and how they might be treated. The heart is a hard-working muscle about the size of a fist. It is located under your ribcage between the lungs. The heart pumps a constant supply of blood throughout your body. The blood carries oxygen and nourishment, the fuel your cells need for daily living. The heart beats on its own, thanks to its natural pacemaker. This small cluster of specialized cells is called the sinoatrial node (S-A node). It is located in the right atrium, the upper right room of your heart. The S-A node produces electrical signals at regular intervals and sends them through a pathway in the heart muscle. These signals cause the parts of the heart to tighten, or contract. The heart's regular rhythmic contractions form heartbeats and can be felt as your pulse. The S-A node signals follow a natural electrical pathway that helps the heart beat efficiently. An electrical impulse travels from the S-A node through the atrioventricular node (A-V node), a second cluster of cells located near the center of the heart. The A-V node then sends the signals out to the walls of the ventricles.

Second, the many impulses coming from the atria are trying to follow the electrical pathway to the ventricles and make them contract at the same rate. Luckily, the AV node limits the number of signals that actually reach the lower chambers, so the whole heart usually does not contract at the 300 bpm rate. However, AF can cause your heart to race and does reduce the pumping efficiency. Like other forms of arrhythmia, AF may prevent the heart from pumping enough blood and oxygen to meet your body's needs. Precise causes of atrial fibrillation can be difficult to identify. High blood pressure and coronary artery disease are associated with AF, as are other heart and lung conditions such as disease of the heart valves, chronic lung disease and congestive heart failure. Otherwise normal hearts influenced by alcohol, stress, caffeine, severe infections or some drugs may experience AF. Sometimes, no underlying cause is identified. As you grow older, the risk of AF seems to increase, especially after age 60. AF is relatively common, affecting about 2 million Americans. Symptoms vary, so not everyone feels the same thing during AF. Some people with AF experience palpitations, a sudden fluttering or pounding in the chest. Sometimes, because your heart is not pumping efficiently during AF, you may feel dizzy, faint or short of breath.
