Athlete's foot is a skin disease caused by a fungus, usually occurring between the toes.
The fungus most commonly attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungus growth.
The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms, are also breeding grounds for fungi. Because the infection was common among athletes who used these facilities frequently, the term "athlete's foot" became popular.
Not all fungus conditions are athlete's foot. Other conditions, such as disturbances of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, also may mimic athlete's foot.
Symptoms
The signs of athlete's foot, singly or combined, are drying skin, itching scaling, inflammation, and blisters. Blisters often lead to cracking of the skin. When blisters break, small raw areas of tissue are exposed, causing pain and swelling. Itching and burning may increase as the infection spreads.
Athlete's foot may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere.

tinea pedis ) is, like Ringworm ( see Ringworm eg , in communal showers at the swimming baths or sports centre (hence its name!). see Ringworm tinea corporis ), it is important to apply the cream not only to the obviously affected area, but to the surrounding 6 cm of normal skin in addition. The rash usually settles within 3 weeks and once again it is important to continue with the treatment for a further 10 days after there is no obvious infection left to see. In the minority of cases where the infection has become very well established and possibly infected with other germs in addition, different treatments may be necessary.
  • Wash feet and toes daily taking great care to dry the skin between the toes thoroughly afterwards Avoid sharing towels in communal changing rooms Change socks daily Opt for cotton rather than nylon socks to reduce sweating Wear leather rather than plastic footwear for the same reason

Skin, Hair and Nails Athlete's Foot Audio File Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection of the foot. It can affect one or both feet. The fungus, called tinea pedis, usually grows in warm, moist areas. Athlete's foot can be contagious, although nobody knows why some people get it and others do not. Athlete's foot usually begins on the skin between the toes and sometimes spreads to the sides of the feet. The skin may become scaly, itchy, red and painful. It may blister, crack or peel. The foot may have an unpleasant odor. Athlete's foot sometimes goes away without medication, but is usually treated with a combination of anti-fungal medications and good foot care. These medications are available without a prescription in powder, cream or spray form. If needed, your health care provider can prescribe an oral anti-fungal medication. To prevent getting athlete's foot, keep your feet clean and dry. Dry your feet well after bathing and showering. Pay particular attention to the area between your toes. Wearing socks designed to wick away moisture may help keep your feet dry. Change your socks daily. Whenever possible, wear sandals or shoes made of natural materials, such as leather. They will allow your feet to "breathe." To prevent spreading the fungus, don't share towels, bath mats, socks or shoes. Don't go barefoot in wet, public areas such as health club showers, public swimming pools and water parks.

Athlete's Foot Athlete's foot is a very common skin conditionmany people will develop it at least once in their lives. It occurs mostly among teenage and adult males. It is uncommon in women and children under the age of 12. If a child displays what appears to be the symptoms of athlete's foot, chances are it's another skin condition. Athlete's foot should not be ignoredit can be easily treated, but it also can be very resistant to treatment. Athlete's foot is a term used to describe what really is a form of fungus infection of the feet. The correct term for athlete's foot is tinea pedis . The fungi that cause it are living germs, like small plants, that grow and multiply on all humans. Some people may actually have the fungus on their skin, but unless the conditions are agreeable, athlete's foot will not develop. Why some people develop athlete's foot and others don't is not clearly known. Athlete's foot does not occur among people who traditionally go barefoot. It's moisture, sweating and lack of proper ventilation of the feet that present the perfect setting for the fungus of athlete's foot to grow.
