Home Faculty Residency Program Cosmetic Surgeries Pricing Breast Augmentation Breast Lift Facelift ... Mission Statement Bells Palsy Introduction If you have Bell’s Palsy or another type of facial paralysis you are not alone. Each year nearly 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. Bell’s Palsy is a weakness or complete paralysis of the facial muscles, and is the most common cause of facial paralysis. The cause of Bell’s Palsy is not completely understood but may be caused by a virus. In addition, even more Americans develop facial paralysis as a result of trauma, infection, tumors and other causes. The worldwide incidence of facial nerve paralysis and facial nerve disorders is unknown, but is substantial. Throughout this section we will talk about facial paralysis and Bell’s Palsy and often use these terms almost interchangeably. Bell’s Palsy is just one type of facial paralysis, and is different from other types of facial nerve paralysis. We will point out these distinctions where they are important. Facial paralysis is a weakness or lack of movement of the facial muscles. The facial muscles control facial movements and thus facial expression. Facial expression is such an important part of our daily interactions with others that paralysis of the facial muscles can have an enormous impact on our lives. Think about it. Facial paralysis impacts how we greet our spouse and kids in the morning; how we interact with colleagues and customers at work; how we socialize with friends and when meeting others. Facial paralysis can have a tremendous impact on self-esteem, even for the most successful and confident of us. Fortunately, in many patients the facial nerve weakness will improve on its own. For those whose facial nerve weakness does not improve spontaneously there are many treatment options.

This simplified explanation is intended for non-physicians. Consult with your own doctor to see if the below information applies to your problem. Bells Palsy is a weakness of the seventh cranial nerve, named after a Dr. Bell. Patients with Bells palsy have a "droopy" face on the affected side.
THE SEVENTH CRANIAL NERVE (Facial nerve) The seventh cranial nerve or facial nerve is a paired structure, like the other cranial nerves. There is one facial nerve for each side of the face. The facial nerve travels a far distance from the centre of the brain (brainstem) out to the face. During much of its course the seventh nerve is encased in a bony canal. The seventh nerve or facial nerve as its name suggests subserves facial movement. Patients with Bells palsy have trouble lifting their eyebrow, closing their eyelid and with smiling on the affected side. The seventh nerve also dampens noise from the ear drum and helps with the sensation of taste.

Bell's Palsy

Introduction
Bell's palsy (BP) also called facial nerve palsy, is usually a unilateral (one-sided) facial paralysis that occurs suddenly and worsens over a period of hours to days. Dysfunction of the facial nerve can occur through several different mechanisms: compromise of the blood supply to the nerve; inflammation and edema within the nerve; immune reaction; or viral infection.
BP is the most common cause of facial paralysis affecting approximately 65,000 persons every year in the United States. BP mostly affects young and middle-aged adults. The incidence rises again after the age of 60.
Recent research has provided evidence that the herpes simplex virus (HSV) may play an important role in as many as 70% of BP cases. HSV is the same virus that causes cold sores and lives in nerves.
Because most cases of BP resolve spontaneously, the need for treatment has been debated, especially in mild cases. The goals of therapy are to prevent or minimize significant and long-term paralysis, disfigurement and disability. Treatment may include medications and rarely, surgery.

BELL'S PALSY I include this because a very good friend of mine is suffering from this. This information was taken from www.bellsplasy.ws WHAT IS BELL'S PALSY?
Bells palsy is a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. It's caused by trauma to the 7th cranial nerve, and is not permanent.
WHY IS IT CALLED BELL'S PALSY?
The condition is named for Sir Charles Bell, a Scottish surgeon who studied the nerve and its innervation of the facial muscles 200 years ago.
HOW COMMON IS BELL'S PALSY?
Bells palsy is not as uncommon as is generally believed. Worldwide statistics set the frequency at just over .02% of the population (with geographical variations). In human terms this is 1 of every 5000 people over the course of a lifetime and 40,000 Americans every year.
IS BELL'S PALSY ALWAYS ON THE SAME SIDE?
The percentage of left or right side cases is approximately equal, and remains equal for recurrences.
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BECAUSE OF GENDER OR RACE?
The incidence of Bells palsy in males and females, as well as in the various races is also approximately equal. The chances of the condition being mild or severe, and the rate of recovery is also equal.

Bell's palsy is an acquired weakness of one side of the face, due to an injury to the facial nerve . The symptoms on the affected side typically include inability to close the eye, to smile, wrinkle the forehead and whistle. Speech may be mildly slurred. Tearing occurs because the eye does not close completely. Taste sensation may be diminished on the front half of the tongue. Sounds may appear louder on the affected side (hyperacusis) this may be caused by paralysis of the stapedius muscle but also occurs independantly. Papillitis may be seen of the fungiform papillae of the affected side. Bell's palsy usually develops over hours to days. The peak involvement usually happens within several days. Mild pain behind the ear is common at onset, as is a subjective sensation of "numbness" of the affected side. Usually it is first noticed when a persons observes it in a mirror, or on eating because food tends to collect between the cheek and gums. How common is Bell's palsy ?

Therapies Acupuncture Research Acupuncture treatment helps Bell's Palsy Acupuncture is a treatment of choice for sufferers of Bell's Palsy according to researchers at the First Affiliated Hospital, Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Changsha. Using acupuncture with pressure on otopoints (a combination group of acupoints) to treat 86 patients with facial spasm the researchers found that the condition was successfully alleviated in over 95 percent of the patients. Simple acupuncture and simple pressure on otopoints were respectively applied in two other groups of patients as controls. The total effective rates in these two groups were 92.1 percent and 62.5 percent respectively. However, the cure rates were 38.4 per cent in the acupuncture with pressure on otopoints, 15.8 in acupuncture alone and 5 percent using pressure on otopoints alone respectively.

    Bell's Palsy
    What is Bell's Palsy?
Bell's Palsy is a nonprogressive neurological disorder of the 7th cranial nerve (a nerve in your face). It causes partial facial paralysis and afflicts about 40,000 Americans a year. The cause of Bell's Palsy is unknown, however, viral infection, autoimmune disease, and micro-circulation problems are suspected causes.
Most people with Bell's Palsy develop a rapid onset of facial weakness. This is usually over several hours to a day, or overnight. In most cases it involves only one side of the face. There is sometimes a family history of Bell's Palsy. Sometimes the Bell's Palsy can be recurrent (about 20% of those who suffer from Bell's Palsy will have a reoccurrence), and some people with Bell's Palsy have symptoms of a virus.
When patient develop a Bell's Palsy they want to know: what caused the weakness or paralysis (what is the diagnosis)?, how long will it last (what is the prognosis)?, and what can I do to make it improve or what do I have to do until it improves (what is treatment)? The most important treatment is to protect the eye. Tears keep your eyes moist through blinking. Often with Bells Palsy the ability to blink is reduced or eliminated which can result in drying, erosion, and ulcer formation on the cornea and possible loss of the eye. Your doctor will often prescribe a lubricant for your eye.

The new family band. I'm sorry I do not see much hope for this new talented boundary breaking band. The problem is Klaus couldn't study in Dresden without losing a year and he only comes home about once every 6 weeks. He does break the state boundaries by coming home though. Ha Ha Ha I'll laugh myself broke (German saying). It's still a lot of fun and I hope we have more gigs than the last and first one (Editors Note: Karl's emotional involvement in band matters has reached for Klaus recognizable levels, which greatly improves the musical output, now somebody has to teach Philipp how to keep a beat). The first one was actually pretty cool. It had this exotic touch added on a week later due to the fact that someone there had been infected with meningitis. I pissed orange for three days due to some totally senseless medicine that was handed out to the local population so the government officials could say they had done something.
