Bell's palsy is not a common disease. It attacks the facial nerve, occurring in few people. The ailment may start due to infection or cold exposure. Clinically very rare with tumours. Post surgical paralysis and trauma may result following a surgery on the course of the nerve.
The virus most responsible for this attack is probably the Herpes Simplex-1 virus. Recent studies showed strong clinical evidence that Bell's patients' studies were found to have this virus present. What are the symptoms? The symptoms usually appear severe immediately following exposure to cold. Most patients complain that they are affected by sitting by the window while travelling. Some patients scared with the ailments in the next morning after sleeping on terrace. Many patients fear “stroke” due to unilateral paralysis and rush for emergency aids. The paralysis is usually unilateral, on one side of the face but it is not uncommon for patients to appear on both sides of the face. Most paralyses are once in a life-time event, but every clinician have seen many patients with a long history of multiple attacks. The severe symptoms usually appear immediately following attack. The victim will be alerted by the symptoms such as asymmetrical smile, involuntary movement associated with a voluntary movement, tearing, inability to whistle or pucker lips and food is caught in the jaw of paralyzed side.

PLEASE
HELP!!! Please Help I nfo about 'Bells Palsy' is Needed.
Is there anyone out there who can help me with information about BELLS PALSY. My 5 yearold daughter Harlee was diagnosed with Bells Palsy the first day she started school. It has affected the right side of her face. Harlee is our baby. She has an older brother who is 10, and two sisters who are 12 and 14. We have had Harlee to two speacialists who she is seeing once a week. Unfortunately, there haven't been many cases of Bells Palsy reported in New Zealand, and only two cases as young as Harlee. The other case was a 3 year old boy. Normally people with Bells Palsy have the herpes blisters in their ear canal, but Harlee doesn't have the herpes blisters. Her ear canal is clear. I would be grateful for any information about Bells Palsy. I would love to hear from anyone out there who may have a child of similar age who also suffers from this unusual disease. Harlee would love to hear from any kids with Bells Palsy. Harlee still goes to school and it doesn't seem to bother her too much.

    Introduction
Bell's palsy (BP) also called facial nerve palsy, is usually a unilateral (one-sided) facial paralysis that occurs suddenly and worsens over a period of hours to days. Dysfunction of the facial nerve can occur through several different mechanisms: compromise of the blood supply to the nerve; inflammation and edema within the nerve; immune reaction; or viral infection.
BP is the most common cause of facial paralysis affecting approximately 65,000 persons every year in the United States. BP mostly affects young and middle-aged adults. The incidence rises again after the age of 60.
Recent research has provided evidence that the herpes simplex virus (HSV) may play an important role in as many as 70% of BP cases. HSV is the same virus that causes cold sores and lives in nerves.

    Acutron Mentor Application brief #9403-HS-2
submitted by Jill Speer LPT, based on 2 cases. Average # of treatments: First patient-5 treatments, second patient-10 treatments. Frequency of treatments: Three times weekly. Physical symptoms: Both patients presented with left Bell's palsy, the first patient with less than functional strength, and severe left sided facial pain, blurring and tearing of left eye. The second patient did not have pain, but demonstrated generally less strength. The left facial pain and eye symptoms resolved within five treatments in the first patient, she also had strength return. Patient #2 has had 10 treatments with strength returning to well. Method: Microcurrent was use in patient #1 mainly for pain control. In patient #2 for healing and to decrease nerve irritation. I have treated several other Bell's palsy without microcurrent using only motor point stimulation with return to normal, generally, in 1-2 months. The addition of microcurrent appeared to accelerate recovery.

BELL'S PALSY Bell’s Palsy: A Chiropractic Case Study A 39-year-old male truck driver presented for chiropractic care with the right side of his face paralyzed and loss of feeling. He reported that the symptoms began two weeks prior. Immediately before the paralysis he said he had intense pain in his right ear. The patient also reported that two weeks before the onset of paralysis, the seat in his truck broke and the vehicle had been riding extremely rough. On examination, the patient was unable to raise his right eyebrow, close the right eye, show his teeth, smile, whistle or puff his cheeks, and reported loss of taste. Cervical subluxations were evident. The patient had nine office visits over a period of three and a half months. He was unable to keep a consistent schedule because of his occupation. Following the first cervical adjustment, he was able to close his eye and regained his sense of taste. After his second adjustment, two weeks after the first, the patient experienced a noticeable increase in facial movements. Minimal improvements were noted for two months after these first changes took place. Following the fourth upper cervical adjustment, two and a half months after the initiation of care, the largest gains in facial movement were experienced. This patient reported that his face was symmetrical and back to normal within eight months after the start of his chiropractic care.

For a professional saxophonist, or any windplayer, the embouchure is the most important connection to your instrument. It serves as the seal for the air stream and is the final adjustment for the quality of the tone, pitch, timbre and response of the instrument. Have you ever thought what you would do if you woke up one day and could not form an embouchure? Well, I have not only thought about it, it happened to me.
