Introduction Hello and Welcome! Since you are here I am assuming you have Bell's, know someone who does or have a general interest. Whatever the reason, I'm glad you've come to visit. There are some wonderful sites and information already created and available on the Internet and I don't intend to duplicate any of that information. What I want to accomplish with this page is arrange it in a way that flows logically and provides information, answers questions, relevant links, talks about options and provides support to those who need it. The areas I've focused on include: General Information About Bell's Palsy Treatment Recovery Support Additional Links My name is Cathy and I have had Bells twice so far - once on each side of my face. The first time in November 1989 and secondly March 1999. It is a frightening and frustrating experience, however I am living proof that it can be beat ~ actually thousands recover ~ and many in under 2 months ~ some sooner, some later and to varying degrees but the odds are good! It's important to stay positive, relaxed, informed and take an active role in your care. The Internet is a wonderful source of information and support. However, be careful with whatever information you find ~ including this page of mine. Information should not be considered medical advice or expert opinion. What is Bell's palsy? There are twelve cranial nerves that lead directly from the brain to various parts of the head. These nerves process hearing, assist in maintaining equilibrium, control movements of the face, throat, neck and eyes, receive sensations from the face, throat and tongue, control the nerve of smell and control the nerve of sight. Any disorder of these nerves will produce a loss of function in the area that the nerve affects. Such is the case with Bell's palsy which is caused by a abnormality of the facial nerve. Named for Scottish anatomist Sir Charles Bell who was first to distinguish between motor and sensory functions of the nerves, Bell's palsy is a paralysis of the facial muscles that usually affects only one side of the face. bodyOffer(19155) Although the cause of Bell's palsy is unknown, it is believed that it may be associated with herpes zoster or shingles, a swelling of the facial nerve as a reaction to viral infections or a lack of blood supply. This disorder affects the cranial nerve that stimulates action in the facial muscles creating a temporary inflammation of the facial nerve. This is a common disorder that appears suddenly, even though the person affected may develop a pain behind the ear or weakness in the facial muscles prior to the onset. The symptoms that occur are unpredictable and can range from mild to the complete paralysis of one side of the face. Unlike a stroke which also causes facial paralysis in the lower part of the face, Bell's palsy affects only the face in both the upper and lower areas.

Both sides are affected, leaving no possibility of expression, and potential speech problems. In addition, most are born with congenital limb deformities such as webbing or fusing. Bell's palsy on the other hand, can strike anyone at any age, and although most (75-90%) will recover completely, there are those who may suffer long-term residual or permanent paralysis. I have spoken to those who have been born with it (lack of oxygen during delivery), those who have been pregnant with it, children, teens, middle-aged, and the elderly.

She was still on the antibotic during surgery. One week after having two teeth(upper teeth, one of the right side, one on the left side,) cut out she was diagnosed with BELLS PALSY. Her regular MD said this was probably not related to the removal of her teeth. I cant help but think there is some relation to it because her sed rate/blood test came back high. Have you ever heard of something happening like this? She just wants to know so she will have some idea if this is a prominate reaction or how long this may last. Very concerned ....so if you could reply we would appreciate your help. Thanks

I got up to go the bathroom. It was dark, so I felt my way around not wanting to wake my fiance and made it to the bathroom and poured myself a drink of water. As I drank, in the dark, I felt water dribble down the left side of my face and onto my pyjamas. I laughed to myself thinking I had missed because I was so tired and half-asleep. I went back to bed and awoke to the sound of my alarm at 6.50am. I recall lying there not wanting to get up – I had never felt so tired, but what made me get up was I had promised myself I would get to work by 8 am that morning as I had so many things to do. As I walked toward the kitchen my left eye felt irritated and I remember thinking how I felt "heavy" – like at the onset of a cold. I then went to rub my irritated eye and to yawn and that's when it hit me – something was seriously wrong.
