Bipolar Disorder
The heart that is soonest awake to the flowers
is always the first to be touched by the thorns.
Basic Terminology
Bipolar disorder is the medical name for manic depression. The terms may be used interchangeably. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness, but it is more appropriately described as a neurobiological brain disorder involving extremes in mood. It is one of the three major affective (mood) disorders . The other two affective disorders are unipolar disorder (depression only) and schizoaffective disorder. Most medical researchers believe that bipolar disorder is genetic. Click here to read the criteria for bipolar disorder from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Click here to read the ICD-10 Classifications for Bipolar Disorder, from the World Health Organization. The DSM or ICD criteria are merely guidelines, sort of like a check-off list of symptoms. Newly-diagnosed people will sometimes go to the library or bookstore to learn about bipolar disorder. They are likely to get very confused by what they read, and wonder if the psychiatrist made a mistake! This is because bipolar disorder may be quite complex in its variations, a fact that the popular literature doesn't always address. Each individual has her or his own unique form of the illness. Some people have mild manias, called

Printed 2001, Reprinted September 2002 Introduction What Are the Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder? Suicide What Is the Course of Bipolar Disorder? ... References ipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives. More than 2 million American adults, or about 1 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year, have bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life. "Manic-depression distorts moods and thoughts, incites dreadful behaviors, destroys the basis of rational thought, and too often erodes the desire and will to live. It is an illness that is biological in its origins, yet one that feels psychological in the experience of it; an illness that is unique in conferring advantage and pleasure, yet one that brings in its wake almost unendurable suffering and, not infrequently, suicide.

Enter the first few letters of the word: Bipolar Disorder: Calming the Storms Glenn Brynes, Ph.D., M.D. Mood, like the weather, is always changing. For most people, the emotional climate remains within predictable limits—not too high and not too low. For a person with bipolar disorder the barometer of life will at times seem to fall from a temperate normal mood, to the bleak chill of depression. It can also shoot up to the bright heights of hypomania or beyond to the brilliant blaze of mania. Bipolar Disorder, as its name suggests, is a condition characterized by periods of high mood in addition to the low moods that occur in the more common “unipolar” depression. Studies show that 1.5% of the population will have at least one hypomanic or manic episode in their adult lives. When a person is hypomanic, they may feel unusually good and competent, or simply irritable. Their thoughts race and consequently their speech is often pressured; they may be distractible and flit from topic to topic. They apply their heightened energy to multiple projects. Sleep seems less necessary. There is a drive for pleasurable activities with uncharacteristic disregard for risk. Friends and relatives who know the person recognize that they are behaving differently—out of character. If the symptoms are so severe that they cause marked impairment in work or social functioning, then the condition is called mania.

Episodes of Substance-Induced Mood Disorder (due to the direct effects of a medication, or other somatic treatments for depression, a drug of abuse, or toxin exposure) or of Mood Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition do not count toward a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder. The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide (This book talks to you, not at you, without being pompous or talking over your head. The author keeps the flow of the text like a friend, explaining a new condition, not a life sentence, and helps find a way to build your life around the diagnoses. This is truly an uplifting and helpful format that the author has used and I recommend it to anyone, newly diagnosed, long time dealing with it, or family or friend).

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, affects at least 2 million Americans at any given time. The disorder is characterized by alternating periods of extreme moods. A person with Bipolar disorder experiences cycling of moods that usually swing from being overly elated or irritable (mania) to sad and hopeless (depression) and then back again, with periods of normal mood in between. For those who have this disorder, it can be extremely distressing and disruptive. The frequency of the swings between these two states, and the duration of the mood, varies from person to person. Bipolar disorder typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not recognized at first as a serious disorder, and people who have it may suffer needlessly for years or even decades. This disorder is not a character flaw, and it is not your fault. It is a serious mood disorder that affects a person's ability to function in every day activities. It affects one's work, one's family, and one's social life.
