Bites and Stings
Every year, thousands of calls are made to the Poison Center regarding insect bite information or treatment advice. While all insects can bite or sting, some are more bothersome and dangerous than others. Bites from fleas, mosquitoes and the common horsefly can cause pain, itching and swelling at the site - an unpleasant experience but not necessarily dangerous, unless an infection occurs.
What is the immediate treatment for bites or stings?
If breathing difficulties, difficult swallowing and/or body-wide itching develop, the patient is having a severe allergic reaction. Immediately call 9-1-1 for assistance. Otherwise, wash the bite or sting area well with soap and water to help prevent infection. If stung or bitten on fingers or hand, remove any rings or jewelry in case of swelling. Your local pharmacist can help you select the best over-the-counter medications to help treat insect and spider bites.

Bites And Stings
Caring for Bites and Stings
Dangerous bites and stings can come from a variety of places, from the household pet, to the hornet in the barn, to the little boy next door. No matter how the bite or sting occurs, however, it must be treated promptly to prevent infection, allergic reactions, or other complications; it's important to be prepared for all types of emergencies. These are just a few tips that will keep you and your family safe this summer season.
Insect Bites
Signals
  • Stinger may be present Pain Swelling Possible allergic reaction
Care
  • If it still remains, remove stinger by scraping away, or lift out using tweezers, carefully so as not to inject more venom. Wash wound Cover Apply a cold pack Watch for signals of allergic reaction Apply a hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching and inflammation
Spider/Scorpion Bite/Sting
The bites of some spiders, such as the black widow and the brown recluse, are particularly dangerous because they affect your whole body. Bites from both of these spiders can cause fever, nausea and pain in addition to the skin reactions at the site of the bite. If you believe you have been bitten by one of these dangerous spiders, see your doctor immediately. Before you do, follow these guidelines:

Poisons or venoms injected by insects, snakes, spiders and some marine creatures have been categorized by chemical composition into three main types. Offensive Poisons are used to disable or kill a potential meal. Defensive Poisons are used to discourage intruders from disturbing nests, hives or young, or for self-defense. Anticoagulants are designed to prevent a victim's blood from clotting and closing a wound after being bitten, so the insect or arachnid can drink it.
Poison Offensive Defensive AntiCoagulant What Uses Them Snakes, Spiders, Jellyfish, some Lizards Ants, Bees, Wasps, Hornets, Yellow-Jackets, Scorpions, Stingrays. Pain lasting a short time (usually 5 to 15 minutes); Swelling; Possible allergic reaction. Itching (the body's reaction); Pain from tearing of the skin with mosquito and fly bites (ticks and chiggers don't cause pain because they insert their mouthparts so slowly); Possible allergic reaction. How to Treat Bites and Stings
by Cynthia Smith,D.V.M. from the ASTC Bulletin, post national issue 1996 Summer means long, warm days romping with your dog in the great out-doors. But just like humans, your dog is susceptible to stings and bites from spiders, snakes and stinging insects, which view your companion as nothing but a four legged intruder. While most stings are painful they are not dangerous unless your dog suffers from an allergic reaction. Such allergic reactions are rare, but they can cause constriction of the dog's airways, resulting in an inability to breathe. Swelling of the skin is a sign that your dog has been stung. If your dog has an allergic reaction to the sting, you will also see swelling around the dog's face or legs. The swollen areas will feel hot to the touch. If your dog is stung by a bee or other type of insect that leaves its stinger behind, use tweezers to pull the foreign body out of your dog's skin. Be sure to grasp the stinger at the point of entry, and to pull it straight out from the skin. Do not grasp the upper part of the stinger with the tweezers since this can result in the injection of more venom into the area. Once the stinger has been removed, apply a cold compress to the spot. Try to keep your dog quiet, and observe it for any distress or for the allergy symptoms mentioned above. If the dog appears uncomfortable, take it to a veterinarian immediately, since allergic shock can occur within half an hour.

Insect Bites and Stings
Why are they dangerous? Insect bites and stings carry the risk of allergic reactions, infections and skin injury. The bites introduce a venom to the body that will often cause the skin around the bite to swell and itch. When bites are received wash the area with water and soap, then apply antibiotic cream and a bandage. Below are directions for caring for more specific types of bites. For information of Human and Animal bites go to the Wounds section of the First Aid Manual Insect bites: If the reaction is mild, apply a paste made from baking soda and water, wet cloth or ice (in a bag or cloth to avoid cold injuries) If allergic reaction seems to be taking place seek medical help as soon as possible, sever reactions should get help immediately. Managing Arthropod Bites and Stings
Robert L. Norris, MD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 26 - NO. 7 - JULY 98 In Brief: Most arthropod bites and stings cause limited swelling, itching, pain, and redness and can be managed by ice application and tetanus prophylaxis as necessary. Stings by bees, wasps, and stinging ants can cause anaphylaxis that may require treatment with epinephrine and antihistamines and respiratory and cardiac maintenance measures. Widow spider bite management is controversial, but interventions for systemic reactions include calcium gluconate, methocarbamol, diazepam, narcotics, and antivenom. Victims of brown spider bites may need hospitalization if lesions enlarge rapidly or there are signs of systemic poisoning. Those stung by a bark scorpion may require oxygen, an intravenous line, pulse oximetry, and cardiac monitoring. W hen we think of sports-related hazards, we generally imagine blunt trauma, heat-related illness, or even rare occurrences such as lightning strikes. We seldom think of arthropods, those little, multilegged creatures whose bites and stings can make life unpleasantor precipitate life-threatening reactions. Knowing and implementing appropriate in-the-field and hospital treatments can make life less miserable for those who have minor reactions and may help save the lives of the few who have severe allergic reactions.
Hymenoptera
The stinging insects that belong to the order Hymenoptera include bees; yellow jackets, hornets, and other wasps; and stinging ants (see "Hymenoptera: Bees, Wasps, and Ants," below). Hymenoptera stings cause an estimated 40 to 150 deaths each year in the United States alone (1), the vast majority of which are due to anaphylactic reactions. Approximately 1 in every 200 people is dangerously allergic to Hymenoptera venom and therefore at risk for fatal anaphylaxis (2).

FIRST AID FOR INSECT STINGS
Take immediate action.  If the stinger remains, remove it by scraping with a credit card or thumbnail.  Squeezing the stinger may force more venom into the skin. Some commercial products, such as StingEze®, are very effective if applied quickly after the sting occurs.  A paste of meat tenderizer and water may also provide relief.  Pain and swelling are normal reactions to stings.  Apply ice to relieve pain and swelling.
More serious symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea, or difficulty swallowing require immediate medical attention

poison). Usually, the discomfort of such bites and stings does not spreadbeyond the affected area and only lasts for a little while.
http://app.hpb.gov.sg/haz/haz02041.asp
How they irritate or harm?
In most cases, an insect bite or sting will cause the affected area to swell or itch. Bee and wasp stings are painful because of their venom (poison). Usually, the discomfort of such bites and stings does not spread beyond the affected area and only lasts for a little while.
Some people may be allergic to the bite or sting, or may go into "shock" as a result of the extreme pain or acute poisoning from multiple stings.
The person bitten by a mosquito carrying the dengue haemorrhagic fever virus or malaria parasite may suffer from these diseases.
What you can do
Always clean the area with soap and water. Do not scratch but use the pulp of your finger to stroke the area if it is itchy. Mosquito Bites
Leave the swelling and itch alone. It will go away in half an hour. Apply something soothing like calamine lotion if you like.
Bedbug or Flea Bites
Apply calamine lotion.
Tick Bites
Use petroleum jelly, any oil or alcohol to loosen the tick's grip on the skin, then remove it with forceps. Apply calamine lotion.
