About three years ago, studies began to describe increased rates of thinning of the bones in HIV-infected men. Subsequent studies have confirmed that compared to HIV-negative men, men with HIV are more likely to have osteopenia or osteoporosis. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are, by definition, two stages of loss of bone calcium. Osteoporosis represents the more severe end of the spectrum. The major risk of osteoporosis is an increased risk of bone fractures, such as broken hips and collapsed vertebra, which can be crippling and even life threatening. Most of the studies to date have been performed in men with HIV infection. However, the risk of osteoporosis is higher in women than in men, and increases dramatically after menopause. As more and more women are living with HIV, and as these women age, it has become increasingly urgent to learn if osteoporosis is a bigger problem for HIV-infected women. Three studies at the 10th CROI addressed bone health in women with HIV. Unfortunately, they did not give a simple answer.

PAEDIATRIC BONE DISORDERS
Background info:
Dwarfism can be PROPORTIONATE - manifesting a symmetric decrease in both truncal and limb length. Dwarfism can be DISPROPORTIONATE - manifesting either a short limb disorder or a short trunk disorder. Short - limbed dwarfism can affect either the proximal, the middle or the distal region of a limb. FORMS OF DYSPLASIA include: Achondroplasia Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Chondrodysplasia Punctalta Kneist Syndrome - AD Metaphyseal chondrodysplasia Multiple Epiphyseal Dysplasia Dysplasia Epiphysiallis Haemimeliea [known as Trevors Disease] Progressive Diaphyseal Dysplasia - AD Mucopolysaccharidosis Diastrophic Dysplasia - AR Cleidocranial Dysplasia - AD Benign Bone Growth Dysplasia
A) Achondroplasia Achondroplasia is the most common form of disproportionate dwarfism. It is an autosomal dominant (AD) condition with an 80% spontaneous mutation. It is caused by abnormal endochondral bone formation [in the proliferative zone] and can be associated with late-in-life childbirth. It is a quantitative [not a qualitative] cartilage defect. The afflicted child will have dwarfed limbs and a normal trunk.

Myeloma bone disease is cancer that affects certain white blood cells called plasma cells. Plasma cells, and other white blood cells, are part of the immune system. Plasma cells produce antibodies proteins that assist the body in ridding itself of harmful substances. Each plasma cell responds to one specific substance by producing one kind of antibody. The body has many types of plasma cells, and, therefore, can respond to many types of substances. When cancer occurs, the body over-produces plasma cells, which are abnormal and alike. These abnormal plasma cells are called myeloma cells.

Bone is living tissue that makes up the body's skeleton. There are three types of bone tissue:
  • compact tissue - the harder, outer tissue of bones cancellous tissue - the sponge-like tissue inside bones subchondral tissue - the smooth tissue at the ends of bones, which is covered with another type of tissue called cartilage
  • Together, compact and cancellous tissues are called the periosteum . Beneath the hard outer shell of the periosteum there are tunnels and canals through which blood and lymphatic vessels run to carry nourishment for the bone. Muscles, ligaments, and tendons may attach to the periosteum. Bones are classified by their shape as long, short, flat, and irregular primarily, they are referred to as long or short.

Diagnostic procedures for bone disorders may include any/all of the following:
    • complete medical history physical examination laboratory tests for blood, urine, and other body fluids x-ray computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan
CT is a type of x-ray image that produces cross-sectional views of specific parts of the body. The x-ray beam rotates around the patient, who has been injected with a contrast medium to help the area of the body reflect the x-ray beam. Information is sent to a computer, which produces the image on a computer screen. A CT scan provides information about bone, muscle and fat. It is also used to assist the physician in locating the exact area for a biopsy. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
MRI is a scanning procedure that uses radio waves and a magnet to produce cross-sectional views of specific parts of the body. The radio waves and the magnet do not contain radiation. A computer receives and translates the radio waves into detailed images of the area of the body under study. MRI scans provide detailed information about soft tissue, the bone marrow cavity, and bone tumors.

We hope to develop new diagnostic and clinical treatments, thereby improvingthe quality of life of children affected by debilitating bone disorders.
    http://murdoch.rch.unimelb.edu.au/pages/child_health/bone_disorders.html
Diseases of cartilage and bone represent a significant health problem. Our knowledge of the causes of these conditions is limited, as is our understanding of the underlying principles of tissue development and breakdown. Our studies are directed at defining the mutations that cause these diseases, and the underlying biochemical pathways involved. We hope to develop new diagnostic and clinical treatments, thereby improving the quality of life of children affected by debilitating bone disorders.
    Research Overview
Inherited bone disorders (osteochondrodysplasias) are an important clinical and social problem. Studying these conditions deepens our understanding of the pathobiology of bone disease, which helps us formulate new therapeutic approaches, and devise biomaterials for bone and cartilage repair. This research program brings together a network of clinicians and scientists, all with the common goal of developing a comprehensive bone dysplasia service. This service will enable the ethical application of basic research advances to the diagnosis and treatment of families with inherited bone disorders.

    BONE DISORDERS.
This page is currently under construction,
and is incomplete! The purpose of this article is to examine the role of
proper nutrition in the normal growth and develop-
ment of bones and joints, and to examine imbalances
in modern pet foods that are detrimental to healthy
formation of bones and joints. Pet foods are not required to have the proper balance
of minerals that are essential to their proper function.
Many brands are extremely imbalanced. For example,
if a large quantity of calcium is contained in a product,
all of the minerals must be increased and be in balance
in relation to one another. A high level of Calcium causes all of the minerals in a diet to be less absorbable, by binding to the minerals during digestion. A very common imbalance in pet foods is the balance between Zinc and Copper. For both minerals to function properly, a pet food should contain about 15. mg. of Zinc for every 2. mg. of Copper. If a product contains a higher margin of Zinc, then the Copper portion will be less available, and may cause deficiency symptoms even if it meets recommended dietary amounts. Studies done on race horses have shown that this particular imbalance can cause joint abnormalities, especially elbow-related
