There are many different terms to describe spinal disc pathology, and all are used differently by different healthcare practitioners. Some examples of terms used to describe spinal disc abnormalities include:
  • Pinched nerve
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated disc (or herniated disk)
  • Bulging disc, ruptured disc, or slipped disc
  • Disc protrusion
  • Disc degeneration (or degenerative disc disease)
  • Disc disease
There is no agreement in the medical field as to the precise definition of any of these terms. Often the patient hears his or her diagnosis referred to in different terms by different practitioners and is left wondering if there is any consensus on what is wrong.

Bulging Disk Not Always Serious
NEW YORK (Reuters) Lower back-pain sufferers shouldn't panic if x-rays reveal bulging or degenerative disks in the spine, according to a California researcher. Unless you plan on becoming an Olympic athlete, the relatively harmless signs of aging shouldn't interfere with daily living.
"About 40% of people over 40 have some sign of degenerative or bulging disks, and this almost never causes disabling symptoms or serious disease," stated Dr. Eugene Carragee in a release from Stanford University Medical Center in California.
"A diagnosis of degenerative or bulging disk is like finding gray hair it's a sign that you're not getting any younger, but it. doesn't say anything at all about your health and how you feel," according to Carragee, an associate professor of functional restoration and chief of Stanford University Medical Center's Spine Center.
As people age, the cartilage disks that cushion the vertebrae the bones that make up the spinal column can become more brittle and bulge outwards.
If a test determines that back pain is not due to some more serious cause, such as a compressed nerve, a tumor or a rare spinal infection, the pain should diminish over time. And a degenerative disk in the spine isn't a sign that you have to cancel daily exercise or activities. Indeed, chiropractic, aerobic and back-strengthening exercises, such as abdominal crunches, can help relieve pain better than medications or inactivity.

herniated disk
In 1990 when my left leg began to feel fuzzy I went to see a doctor who diagnosed the problem as three herniated disks. In the course of the next four years, during which I was in a lot of pain most of the time, I was given therapy and two sets of cortisone shots in the spine, which brought little relief.

A. Sciatica is a general term for pain along the sciatic nerve. It is usually a sharp pain is sometimes described as an electrical-like shock starting in the buttock that travels down the back of thigh and leg. The most common cause is a herniated disk in your back, although there are other causes as well. An MRI Scan of your lower back may help in making the diagnosis.
Q. What if the MRI Scan shows a herniated disk? What do I do then?

Clemson's Allenspach Has Bulging Disk, Will Miss Georgia Tech Game
Junior center suffered injury early in men's hoops game at Duke Saturday. Jan. 30, 2000 CLEMSON, S.C. Starting center Adam Allenspach will miss at least the Georgia Tech game on Wednesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum due to a bulging disk in his back. Allenspach suffered the injury early in the first half of Clemson's 93-59 loss at Duke on Saturday. After hitting a 15-foot corner jumper, Allenspach collapsed in pain near midcourt. He did not play the rest of the game. It was first believed that Allenspach had suffered a hip-pointer, but an MRI on Sunday revealed the disk problem. He is listed as questionable at this time for Sunday's game with North Carolina at Littlejohn Coliseum. Allenspach, a junior, is one of the prime reasons Clemson has led the ACC and ranks 14th in the nation in rebounding this year. He has averaged 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 49 percent from the field. He is second on the Tiger team in scoring, first in rebounding and second in field goal percentage. He is also one of Clemson's top free throw shooters with a 71 percent mark and is a big reason opposing starting centers have failed to record a double-double against the Tigers this year.

Herniated Disk.
Of course, the first step in coping with back pain or neck pain is to receive a medical evaluation to determine the cause of the pain.
  • In some situations, such as a herniated disc in the spine, you may
need to pay attention to the pain so that it can serve as a warning signal of impending damage.
  • In other cases, especially when the pain is chronic and the health
condition unchangeable, you can try and keep the pain from being the entire focus of your life. Often patients "act as if" they do not have a pain problem. This can help "normalize" the person's activities and keep him or her out of the "sick role".

Hurt Will Miss Remainder of Season With Back Injury Surgery necessary to repair a bulging disk in his lower back Jan. 18, 2002 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville freshman guard Carlos Hurt will have surgery to repair a disk in his lower back and will miss the remainder of the basketball season. "This is another big blow to us," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino . "He's in very serious pain. There is no rush, but he should be back within three months after the surgery. The best thing for his back problem is stretching, flexibility, exercise and good nutrition." Hurt has a bulging disk which is pinching a nerve in his back. He did not respond favorably to an epidural injection he received last Saturday and his pain level had increased. He has missed the last two games and had been scheduled to receive another epidural injection Saturday, when the Cardinals will visit Cincinnati for a 2 p.m. contest. He is expected to be walking within three or four days following surgery, stretching within three to four weeks and should return to playing status within about three months. Hurt started seven games for the Cardinals this season, averaging 8.4 points and 3.3 assists. The Cards' first McDonald's High School All-America selection since 1993, Hurt scored in double figures in eight games, including his last six straight.

Bulging disk ends season for Gonzalez
September 27, 2000 BY JOHN LOWE FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER KANSAS CITY, Mo. Juan Gonzalez has a herniated disk in his back and won't play again before the season ends Sunday. The disk problem also might reduce and perhaps ruin the chances that the Tigers will re-sign the slugger for next season and beyond. The back problems no doubt will be taken into account when the club decides how much money to offer Gonzalez, who can be a free agent after this season. Club officials could decide to offer him considerably less than if he were coming off a healthy, productive season. Tigers general manager Randy Smith said he wanted to gather information from the doctors involved with Gonzalez's case before the club decides what contract offer to make. "Obviously, this probably slows down our thought process and the formulation of a game plan," Smith said. "We don't want to plan our offer until we know exactly what his health situation is." Smith acknowledged what Gonzalez demonstrated a week ago, when in his most recent appearance he struck out twice in two at-bats while playing with the back pain: It's hard for a player to swing the bat properly if his back is hurting.
