ABOUT cardiomyopathy. cardiomyopathy means disease of the heart muscle. dilatedcardiomyopathy is the most common form of the disease.
http://www.transplantandy.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/about_cardiomyopathy.htm
ABOUT CARDIOMYOPATHY Cardiomyopathy means disease of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy damages the muscle tone of the heart and reduces its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy is dangerous because it often goes unrecognized and is untreated. It is also different from other heart problems because it often affects younger people and often results in sudden death. There are four types of heart muscle disease. dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common form of the disease. It affects the chambers of the heart by weakening their walls. In about 80% of cases doctors do not know the cause. This type of cardiomyopathy is called IDIOPATHIC DC Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the second most common form of the disease. It is usually an inherited disease that causes a thickening of the hearts walls. Restrictive cardiomyopathy is rare, it gets it name because the condition restricts the heart from stretching properly, which limits the amount of blood that can fill the chambers of the heart. Ischaemic cardiomyopathy is the weakening of the heart muscle tissue that results from coronary disease or heart attacks. Treatment for this type of cardiomyopthy is similar to that for other forms of cardiomyopathy, with special attention given to coronary artery disease.

http://www.barkbytes.com/medical/med0085.html
CARDIOMYOPATHY
by Malcolm Dupries Cardiomyopathy is a term used to describe a condition which occurs to the heart muscle, when one or more diseases cause inflammation and scarring. This inflammation and scarring causes an enlargement of the heart itself, and the chambers within the heart dilate and become less efficient in supplying the body and organs with blood. The end result of a dog suffering from this condition is that the heart muscle will eventually weaken and the dog will develop congestive heart failure, and will die.
The articles that the author used in researching this condition stated that the reason dogs develop this condition is unknown, but assumed to be genetic. Exactly how it is inherited is not yet documented, however, the disease appears to be very breed specific. There are some mixed breeds of dogs that have been diagnosed with this condition, but it is extremely rare. The breeds of dog that have documented histories of cardiomyopathy are: Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and Saint Bernards.
Doberman Pinschers have been most often used in the medical research on this condition. It is important to realise that a dog does not react to illnesses like a human will. The clinical signs of a dog suffering from cardiomyopathy do not appear over a long period of time. The signs often appear over a few days, when in reality, the disease starts at an early age, between two and five years of age. Researchers have discovered that male dogs are asymtomatic until the disease becomes severe, sometime between five and eight years of age. Female dogs are often asymtomatic until they are between nine and twelve years of age. Once the clinical signs appear the dog may already be in the stage of severe heart failure.

What is cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is any disease of the heart muscle in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood effectively. In some instances, heart rhythm is disturbed, leading to irregular heartbeats, or arrhythmias. There may be multiple causes of cardiomyopathy, including viral infections. Sometimes, the exact cause of the muscle disease is never found. How does cardiomyopathy differ from other heart disorders?

    Cardiomyopathy
    Quick Reference
Cardiomyopathies are a group of conditions where the heart muscle enlarges so that its function is impaired. Symptoms and causes of cardiomyopathy are often similar to those of heart failure , and cardiomyopathy can cause heart failure. Men and African Americans are at particularly high risk.
    Detailed Description
There are two types of cardiomyopathy, ischemic and nonischemic. Ischemic is caused by a lack of oxygen in the heart generally due to coronary artery disease. The heart muscle enlarges (strengthens) because the lack of oxygen forces it to do extra work.
Nonischemic cardiomyopathy can be further broken down into three categories:
    • Dilated Congestive Cardiomyopathy
    • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
    • Restrictive Cardiomyopathy
87 percent of nonischemic cardiomyopathies are dilated. In a patient with dilated cardiomyopathy, inadequate supply of blood, rather than oxygen, injures parts of the heart. The left ventricle, whose job it is to pump blood from the heart and lungs into the rest of the body, stretches to compensate for this lack. If it does not succeed, you have an enlarged, yet weakened muscle. Though dilated cardiomyopathy begins in the left ventricle, it can and often does spread to the entire heart. Dilated congestive cardiomyopathies usually result in

The disease can be caused by viral, toxic, post-partum, congenital or extensive multi-vessel coronary artery disease. The left ventricular ejection fraction in cardiomyopathies will often be less than 25%, as compared to the normal, while greater than 55% is the rule for normality. One of the most visible features is the relatively weak excursion of the diastolic opening of the mitral leaflets. cardiomyopathy refers to abnormalities of the structure or function of the heartmuscle. The most prevalent form is dilated congestive cardiomyopathy (DCM).
    http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/Concern/Cardiomyopathy.htm
Cardiomyopathy Also indexed as: Dilated Congestive Cardiomyopathy (DCM), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Restrictive Cardiomyopathy Cardiomyopathy refers to abnormalities of the structure or function of the heart muscle. There are three major types of cardiomyopathy: dilated congestive, hypertrophic, and restrictive. The most prevalent form is dilated congestive cardiomyopathy (DCM). In people with DCM, the heart muscle is damaged, most commonly by coronary artery disease ( atherosclerosis People with diabetes have been reported to be at increased risk for being diagnosed with DCM. DCM can also be triggered by alcohol abuse, infections , exposure to certain drugs and toxins, nutritional deficiencies, connective tissue diseases, hereditary disorders, and pregnancy In DCM, the heart gradually loses its efficiency as a pump. Cardiomyopathy is a serious health condition and requires expert medical care rather than self-treatment. However, because of the associations between cardiomyopathy and diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension , and congestive heart failure , lifestyle recommendations for the prevention of these conditions may also help prevent DCM.

    Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy August 23, 2001 Question What is the differences between hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy?
Answer Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are usually two seperate entities which can both cause shortness of breath. HCM is a term used to describe an abnormal thickening of the wall that separates the two main pumping chambers of the heart. There are different varieties, but they all have abnormal thickening of the heart wall in common. HCM is usually caused by a congenital misalignment of the muscle fibers which then causes the wall to eventually thicken. Depending upon where in the wall the thickening occurs, there can be an obstruction to the outflow of blood, which may then cause the shortness of breath and fatigue, but not always. Sometimes, people with HCM have abnormal heart rhythms, which can cause dizziness and are treated with antiarrhythmic medicines or an implanted defibrillator. There are other forms of HCM which are caused by such things as long-standing, poorly-controlled high blood pressure, or scarring and narrowing of the aortic valve. They involve an abnormal general thickening of the walls of the main pumping chamber (ventricle).

    What is a cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is a medical term used to explain that there is a heart (Cardio) muscle (myo) disorder or problem (pathy). There are four types of Cardiomyopathy:
    Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a condition where the heart has become enlarged and the heart muscle does not pump as well as normal. As a result of this there are some occasions when the muscle of the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently around the body. When this occurs, it causes some fluid to build up in thelungs, which may give you that feeling of brathlessness as your lungs area little heavier witht extra fluid. This is called left heart failure. Now do not be alarmed at that term which simply means that the heart is not pumping as well as it should. It does not mean your heart will stop. There can also be a problem with the muscle of the right side of the heart to give one right heart failure. As with the left side, this simply means that the right heart is less good at pumping blood and this may cause fuid to build up inthe tissues and organs of the body, usually the legs and ankles, and the liver and abdomen.
    Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a condition where there is an increased thickening of the heart muscle. The heart muscle may thicken in individuals as a result of high blood pressure or athletic training.
