Childhood Depression
Presenter: Kate Sieper Researcher: Jodie Gunders Wednesday, 24 July 2002 Some ten-year-olds are on anti-depressants. Could our parenting and teaching techniques be robbing our children of their happiness?
Dr Helen Street is a social psychologist from the University of Western Australia and is currently involved in a study examining depression in children.
In fact, she's found four percent of the children she studied are clinically depressed, including some as young as three years old, and that there are actually ten-year-olds taking anti-depressants. Kate Sieper asked Dr Street where her studies of childhood depression began. "I've been studying depression for the last twelve years and looked at depression in adults and the reasons why it's increasing so rapidly," she said. "Then over the last couple of years I got more and more interested in where it starts and where it comes from and that turned by attention to children....There does seem to be an alarmingly high level of depression in children and in young children as well." "I think one of the reasons for this is that we're more aware of depression than we have been before so we're more able to detect it....I think that changes in society, in particular, and where we place our values seem to have quite an impact on childrens' wellbeing."

Irritability, chronic fatigue, apathy, somatic complaints, social withdrawal, sleep difficulties, and lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities indicate the possibility of childhood depression. Sadness and depression in children may be expressed through temper tantrums, boredom, low self-esteem, lack of motivation, and deterioration in school work. Sleep and eating problems may be expressed either way, too much or too little sleep and poor appetite or overeating. Depressive symptoms may be acute (major depressive disorder), chronic (dysthymic disorder), or in response to a triggering life event (adjustment disorder with depressed mood). Normal grief symptoms that continue past two months and lead to impairment at school or home require intervention to prevent long-lasting dysfunction.

Childhood depression symptoms
Sadness is a universal emotion that no one is immune from, everyone in the world feels sad in some way or another on a daily basis for various reasons. The state of feeling sad is called “depression” and usually refers to a condition of feeling sad very often, for a prolonged period of time. Depression is one of the leading causes of poor school performance in young people. It is also associated with many other difficulties including learning problems, acting out in school, dropping out of school, delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual promiscuity, phobias, panic disorder, eating disorders, excessive risk taking behavior, violence and suicide. bodyOffer(29464) Childhood depression is just as serious as adult depression. However, it is important to recognize that children have unique signs to be aware of when recognizing and diagnosing depression. Depression in children may manifest itself in different ways, in different age groups. The younger a child is, the more difficult it is for them to understand their feelings, to identify them, and thus, to put a label to them. The younger a child is, the harder it is for them to be able to translate their feelings into thoughts and this makes it very difficult to express their feelings into words. In children ages 3 through 5, the most common emotional signs of depression are sadness, a detached or far away look, displays of anger and aggression, a timid or fearful appearance, shyness, a spacey look, moodiness and irritability. Young children who are depressed may have physical symptoms that are unexplainable such as headaches, stomach aches, cramps, nausea, failure to thrive, wetting the bed, asthma, tiredness, difficulties getting to sleep, and nightmares. They may display aggressive behaviors, such as hitting or fighting, or may suddenly start lying or stealing.

Dealing With Childhood Depression

By Ginny Hermann When we think of children and depression, the picture that most likely pops into mind is that of a lonely teenager, diary in hand, languishing in the isolation of her bedroom, or we envision a misfit adolescent, sulking in a corner with only his Game Boy and comic books for company. But depression isn't just a teenage or adolescent problem. The "blues" can strike as early as kindergarten and can progress into an extremely serious illness if left untreated. According to Ellie Epstein, an employee assistance program counselor with Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb., childhood depression is more common than you would think. "There are many things that can contribute to a young child's bout with depression," says Epstein. "A stressful life event is usually found to be the trigger in children ages 6 through 9. Since depression has very little to do with biology at this age, the causes are usually found to be environmental, something that has occurred either inside or outside the family unit." The Effects of Tragedy
Unpleasant family events – such as death, divorce, family conflict, illness or physical disability – can turn an otherwise happy-go-lucky youngster into a sad, withdrawn child.

"The most specific symptom of depressive disorders in kids under age 6 is something called anhedonia essentially, appearing to have no fun while at play," says psychiatrist Joan L. Luby, MD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "Enjoying activities in play is essential to a child's life, so if you notice that your child consistently doesn't want to play, or doesn't seem to enjoy playtime, it could signal that your child may need to be clinically assessed for depression." Another play-related clue: Preschoolers who are likely to have depression typically have recurrent and consistent themes of despair, sadness, and death in play activities.

Peter Jensen, MD, New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University
A recent study by researchers at Columbia University in New York City reports that bad parenting may put children at a higher risk for anxiety and depression. The investigators interviewed nearly 600 parents and their children, and results showed that poor parental behaviors-like verbal abuse, inconsistent rules, parental arguments in front of children, and a lack of supervision-can all increase the chances of childhood anxiety or depression. Surprisingly, studies show that up to 2.5 percent of young children and 8.3 percent of adolescents in the United States suffer from depression. Child psychiatrist Dr. Peter Jensen looks more closely at some of the symptoms and treatments for this difficult condition.

, Licensed Clinical Psychologist Q: Is there such a thing as "childhood depression"?
Contrary to popular belief, children are not immune to experiencing clinical depression. In fact, studies have found as many as one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents may be experiencing clinical depression. Seven to 14 percent of children will experience significant depression by the age of 15. Once a child has experienced depression, he or she is at risk of suffering again from depression within the next five years. Additionally, the rate of suicide for 5 to 24 year olds has nearly tripled from 1960, making suicide the leading cause of death among college age youth. What are some signs of childhood depression?

CITY OFFERS FREE, CONFIDENTIAL SCREENING FOR CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION AWARENESS DAY
Tuesday, May 7, 2002 is Childhood Depression Awareness Day . To educate parents about the warning signs of childhood depression and resources available to children and their families, the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services together with its Federation of Mental Hygiene Agencies, the NYC Depression Coalition, and the Mental Health Association is offering free, confidential depression screening services at more than 45 sites throughout the five boroughs. Many of these sites will be offering screenings throughout the month. Parents and caregivers can call to find out about screening site locations near them. “On any given day, one in 8 teenagers and one in 33 younger children may experience childhood depression. Mental Health problems do not discriminate. They know no race, creed, age limit or economic status. Unfortunately, depression in young people is often overlooked, although it can lead to social isolation, poor academic performance, strained family relationships, and even suicide. In fact, according to the National Mental Health Association, 13 young people take their own lives every day,” Deputy Commissioner Elsie Del Campo said. Early diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems is important to developing a healthy and productive life. The screening centers throughout the City are a resource that can be tapped by New Yorkers throughout the year to provide parents with affordable, professional care for their families.
