Advocates Lift Up Childhood Depression Day Advocates for children with mental health problems on Childhood Depression Awareness Day, at a May 8 press conference emphasized the importance of "aggressively and completely" treating childhood depression and called attention to the need for parity in mental health services. The press conference coincided with an art exhibit and quilt featuring artworks created by children with mental illnesses, displayed in the United Methodist Building, which dramatized their struggle with psychiatric and emotional disorders. The observance is part of the National Mental Health Month, held each May. "It is frightening that an illness rages our young people so silently that it requires a day of awareness," said Jane Hull Harvey, GBCS assistant general secretary. "Yet, with today’s action comes the hope that awareness will be followed by diagnosis and treatment, support systems and research." Harvey noted that there was a "special appeal" in her voice because her son, Stephen, battled depression and committed suicide more than 10 years ago. According to the Center for Mental Health Services, one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents suffer from depression. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for children aged five to 14 and the sixth leading cause of death for teens and young adults aged 15 to 24.
