In fact, were you clad for the beach, in nothing but a bathing suit, your body would begin to feel cold as soon as the air temperature dropped below 80 degrees. So unless you are properly bundled, the occasional 45-degree breeze at the crater rim can bite. Your skin feels it first. As the nerves make the call to the thermostat in your brain, your pores stop all sweat production; evaporation of moisture adds to the cold. At this time, the blood vessels in your skin constrict to decrease the flow of warm blood to the outer surface of the body, where it would cool quickly. The hypothalamus in the brain receives the call and kicks your body into action. First, it plays defense by shifting the flow of blood to vital organs to keep them warm. That means circulation decreases in those body parts that aren't essential to life such as your fingers and toes. As your blood warms your heart and lungs, your face pales and your hands and feet get cold.
