Ulcers in the mouth are usually canker sores if they are on the mucous membranes but herpes if they are on the hard palate, gums or tongue. Varicella zoster (chicken pox) causes chicken pox and shingles. In some cases, herpes can attack the eyes and can affect the central nervous system in immuno-compromised individuals. Herpes simplex infection is common; 20 to 40 percent of the population has recurrent herpes attacks. It has been reported that from 30 to 100 percent of the population is infected with a herpes virus of some kind at some time in their lives. Initial attacks may cause no symptoms or may cause lip or mouth ulcers. The first attack tends to be the most severe and may start with itching, tenderness, fever and swollen lymph glands, especially in the jaw and throat area.
