Quick Review of Published Data for Common Cold Cure
Following are main findings as figures from each of the published double-blind, placebo-controlled reports using properly prepared zinc lozenges releasing positively charged, hydrated Zn ions showing Zinc Ion Availability Value (ZIA). This review excludes reports wherein positively charged zinc species are other than hydrated Zn ions.
Extreme variation in zinc ion availability (ZIA) values (negative 54 which worsened colds, to positive 100 which shortened them by an average of 7 days) of experimental lozenges made between 1985 and 1995 was the single factor that set back common cold research by 15 years, creating chaos. If you go no further into this site than this paragraph, you really should see how order is brought out of chaos using the relationship between zinc ion availability (ZIA) and its effect on the duration of common colds as demonstrated in published, peer reviewed reports of clinical trials of various zinc lozenges for common colds. Norwalk Viruses Widespread
All of us know someone who has been ill with a “stomach bug” this season. Many of these are undefined viral or bacterial illnesses that typically cause some discomfort for a few days and then disappear as mysteriously as they showed up. But there’s a good chance that the culprit may have been either the Norwalk virus or one of its many relatives. Norwalk virus caused an outbreak of illnesses in Norwalk, Ohio in the 1970’s, and each subsequent related outbreak has been termed “Norwalk-like.” The viruses are second only to the common cold in the occurrence of viral illnesses in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that an estimated 181,000 cases of Norwalk or Norwalk-like infection occur annually in the United States. The high incidence was brought to light last year when hundreds of cruise ship passengers became ill during their trips. The outbreaks, which took place on ships from several different companies, were all determined to be associated with Norwalk-like viruses.

Red wine is said to be good for the heart
Another health benefit has been attributed to red wine - fighting off the common cold. According to scientists in Spain, drinking wine, especially red, stops people from developing colds. Something in wine seems to have a protective effect because the same was not seen with beer and spirits. The evidence comes from a year long study of 4,000 volunteers. Experts at five universities found that people who drank more than two glasses of red wine a day had 44% fewer colds than teetotallers. Drinking one glass of red wine a day also protected against colds, but to a lesser extent. Lifestyle factors Red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a lower rate of heart disease. An ingredient in red wine may also prevent herpes, according to a recent study. The ability of red wine to ward off colds may be due to its antioxidant properties, according to Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University.

Researchers from Agouron Pharmaceuticals say they may have found a cure for the common cold
September 28, 1998
Web posted at: 12:13 p.m. EDT (1613 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore NEW YORK (CNN) With the arrival of autumn comes the season of falling leaves and stuffy noses. If you dread red eyes and sniffles, a cure for the common cold is under development. Researchers from Agouron Pharmaceuticals have been working on a remedy for the common cold that fights the virus that causes it. "We hope that it will be a cure for the common cold," said Amy Patick, a biologist with Agouron Pharmaceuticals. At a major infectious disease conference in San Diego last week, the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, researchers presented their results of testing a new compound, AG70-88. A Survival Guide for Preventing and Treating Influenza and the Common Cold
Influenza (commonly known as the flu) and colds are among the most common infections of the respiratory system. People often confuse the two, calling a bad cold the "flu," or vice versa. There are some key differences between these two unwelcome visitors, even though they are both caused by viruses, and are both likely to occur during the winter months. However, the information here is as useful in July as it is in January. Please Note: The Guidelines are also available in Spanish. What Is a Cold?

Cold 'cure' comes one step closer
Progress is slow towards a common cold cure
US scientists believe they have found a way of blocking one of the principal viruses that causes cold symptoms in adults. Their research has successfully stopped viruses from binding with human cells in a test tube. If the virus cannot bind with a cell, it cannot enter the cell and reproduce, which should stop or at least slow its progress. However, the successful production of a cold "vaccine" is still a long way off - as conditions in a test tube differ greatly from those in the average human nose. The report comes from the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, and is published in the journal Science. Scientists managed to tailor the bacterium E.coli, which can cause food poisoning in some forms, but also helps to break down food in the gut, so that it mimicked the cell protein which joins with the virus. The theory is that a vaccine created from millions of these proteins would make viruses bind to these rather than the cells.

The normal cell cycle takes approximately 24 hours to complete. The cell cycle is an immensely complicated process of activation and deactivation of numerous enzymes in specific phases of the 24-hour cycle. See the diagram below.
    G0..G1………………x1…….S………………………..G2…………x2..M……G0
Caffeine prevents cells from pausing at x2. It doesn’t affect x1, to our knowledge. One of the biological roles of the G2 checkpoint is to pause the cell long enough for damaged DNA to be repaired. During G2, DNA repair enzymes are synthesized or activated. People who have a genetic defect in the synthesis of specific DNA repair enzymes cannot, ever, be exposed to UV light. They will develop skin cancers all over their body.
One of the goals of cancer chemotherapy or radiation therapy is to damage the DNA of cancer cells to the extent that they literally fall apart. If the cancer cell is allowed to pause at the G2 checkpoint, it can repair the damaged DNA and defeat the efficacy of the chemotherapy/radiation treatment and proceed to M or mitosis, the phase where the cell actually divides into two separate cells. Caffeine blocks the x2 checkpoint thereby preventing any DNA repair from occurring. The cancer cell with its damaged DNA proceeds to G1 where it usually dies at the x1 checkpoint. Caffeine’s ability to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy and radiation therapy has been known for 10 years. Until recently, the biochemical pathway by which caffeine blocks the G2 checkpoint was unknown.
Caffeine, theophylline and other methylxanthines inhibit the ATM/ATR enzymes in the cytoplasm of the cell. This sets off a biochemical chain reaction that eventually dephosphorylates (activates) Cdc2 in the nucleus, thereby allowing cell division to occur.

Garlic has traditionally been used to treat the common cold
People who take a garlic supplement each day are far less likely to fall victim to the common cold than those who do not, research suggests. Although garlic has been traditionally used to fight off and treat the symptoms of the common cold, this is the first hard evidence of its medicinal properties. However, more research will be needed to corroborate the data. Common cold factfile The common cold is the most common disease of mankind Adults catch between two and four colds a year. Infants and young children suffer between six and 10 colds each year. A 75-year-old man has suffered about 200 common cold infections during his lifetime. Each person spends between two and three years of his life with a cold. The study found that a daily garlic supplement containing allicin, a purified component of garlic considered to be the major biologically active agent produced by the plant, reduced the risk of catching a cold by more than half.

No consistently effective therapy for the common cold has been well documented, but evidence suggests that several possible mechanisms may make zinc an effective treatment. Objective: To test the efficacy of zinc gluconate lozenges in reducing the duration of symptoms caused by the common cold. Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Setting: Outpatient department of a large tertiary care center. Patients: 100 employees of the Cleveland Clinic who developed symptoms of the common cold within 24 hours before enrollment. Intervention: Patients in the zinc group ( n = 50) received lozenges (one lozenge every 2 hours while awake) containing 13.3 mg of zinc from zinc gluconate as long as they had cold symptoms.
