The cause of these disorders can rarely be found, though chromosome abnormalities, genetic factors and infections such as rubella during pregnancy may all play a role. Symptoms of congenital heart disease vary with the type of abnormality. Hypertension, poor growth and a bluish cast to the skin are among the common ones. Some abnormalities produce no symptoms early in life. Most congenital heart disorders can be corrected by surgery, and some mild abnormalities correct themselves in the first year of life. Timing of surgery depends on the child's overall health and the type of defect. It is not unusual to wait until the child is one or more years old. The most common abnormality

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the name given to any heart defect or malformation that is present at birth. Congenital heart disease is the most common type of birth defect and in most cases, the congenital heart defect involves a structure within the heart and/or the large vessels that either leave or enter the heart. Congenital heart diseases may be mild and unnoticed at birth, then diagnosed later in life (adult congenital heart disease such as Marfan syndrome). Other defects are so severe that they cause a pregnancy complication and diagnosis occurs just before or after birth. Many babies born with CHD go on to lead healthy, full adult lives. Patients with CHD are more susceptible to heart valve disease and infections and may be advised to take antibiotics prior to dental work or medical procedures. Types of CHD include the following:

Congenital Heart Disease (Birth Defect)
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the name given to any heart defect or malformation that is present at birth. Most types of congenital heart defect involve the malformation of a structure within the heart and/or the large vessels that either leave or enter the heart. Congenital heart disease is the most common congenital birth defect, occurring in about eight out of 1,000 live births, or approximately 32,000 American-born babies every year. In the vast majority of patients, the cause of congenital heart disease (CHD) is unknown. However, there are some risk factors that have been associated with a higher rate of CHD. These risk factors include genetic abnormalities (e.g., Down syndrome); certain medications taken during pregnancy; alcohol or drug abuse during pregnancy; maternal viral infection, such as rubella (German measles) in the first trimester. Furthermore, the risk of having a child with CHD increases from eight in 1000 to 16 in 1000 if a parent or sibling has CHD. Types of congenital heart defects include the following:

Research Team to Tackle Congenital Heart Disease Where It Starts
NIH-Funded Center Brings Together Basic Science and Clinical Cardiology
BOSTONFebruary 2, 1999Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School recently received a five-year $9 million commitment from the National Institutes of Health for a Specialized Center of Research in Congenital Heart Disease. They will study the molecular mechanisms of congenital heart disease with a particular emphasis on factors that play critical roles in early stages of the developing heart. Approximately 1 in 100 babies in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect. Some conditions, such ventricular septal defect (a hole in the wall separating the heart's lower chambers), may get smaller or disappear on their own while others cause severe symptoms or death and require surgical correction. Understanding the molecular underpinnings of congenital heart disease could lead to better therapies and perhaps eventually preventive interventions. Seigo Izumo, professor of medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), will direct the Center. Project leaders include Christine Seidman, professor of medicine and genetics at HMS and Brigham and Women's Hospital; Jonathan Seidman, professor of genetics at HMS; Andrew Lassar, associate professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at HMS; and Cliff Tabin, professor of genetics at HMS. James P. Morgan, professor of medicine at BIDMC and HMS, will lead the small-animal cardiac physiology core, with participation from researchers at BIDMC and Children's Hospital.

Within the last two decades, rapid advances in health care provision have been made in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.1 An example of this remarkable progress is the provision of excellent surgical care facilities for children with congenital heart disease (CHD), such that cardiac surgery is now a routine event in designated centers in the Kingdom. A complete medical examination, which is a prerequisite for cardiac surgery, entails the detection and evaluation of any associated non-cardiac defects (NCD). In this regard, a knowledge of the general incidence and types of such NCD in a particular region would be useful since it could serve as a guide during the preoperative assessment of individual patients. We have therefore studied the NCD in Saudi children who presented to us with CHD and report our findings.

A Child's Struggle With Congenital Heart Disease
Told by his Mother
Hi. My name is Beth. I am a mother of a child with congenital heart disease. Mathew's story is a long one. One that is painful for me to tell. But I am wanting to tell it for those parents out there who have a child with a health problem and feel like they are alone. In the 15 years that I've had Mathew, I've experienced so many different emotions. Fear of losing him, helplessness when he was off in surgery where I couldn't do anything to help him, Anger for not understanding why this was happening to my child, frustration when not being able to keep medicine down a 4 month old, and envy when I saw parents with big healthy, thriving babies. What I would have given as that young mother, to have had someone to talk to with similar problems. I felt like I was the only one to experience this kind of situation. That is why I'm writing this page. If telling this story helps one person, then it was very much worth the time. Congenital Heart Disease: How to Care For Your Baby and Yourself What does congenital heart disease mean?
Congenital means that your baby was born with it. Heart disease means there is a problem with the heart. Did I do something during pregnancy that made my baby have this problem? It's normal to worry that something you did could have caused the problem, but most of the time doctors don't know what caused it. Talk with your family doctor if you're worried that you caused your baby's heart problem, but don't blame yourself. I was depressed when I found out my baby has a heart problem. Is that normal? Yes. Feeling angry, guilty or depressed is normal. Knowing that your baby has a heart problem is stressful. When you first found out about your baby's problem, you may have been in shock. Is it okay to pick up my baby? Yes. Try not to be afraid to pick up or hold your baby. You won't hurt your baby by holding him or her. Your baby needs your love and attention. Play with your baby, talk to your baby. These things are important for both of you. Your baby needs to be loved and cared for just like any other baby. Why is it harder for my baby to feed?

Congenital Heart Disease
Heart Disease at Birth
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a very broad term that describes a large number of different cardiovascular defects. Some of these defects are the result of incomplete development of some parts of the heart and circulatory system in the womb. Although present at birth, many defects may not be obvious immediately. Because the heart and circulatory system do not remain the same throughout a person's life, malformations of the heart or circulatory system that are not a problem for a person in childhood may have serious effects during their adult years.
It is important to note that more than 90% of children born with a congenital heart defect survive into adulthood. This is thanks to vast improvements in diagnosing heart defects and the development of surgical procedures that can repair the defects.

Overview of Congenital Heart Disease
One out of every 100 babies born in the United States has a congenital (present at birth) heart defect - a problem that occurred as the baby's heart was developing during pregnancy, before the baby is born. Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects. A baby's heart begins to develop at conception, but is completely formed by eight weeks into the pregnancy. Congenital heart defects happen during this crucial first eight weeks of the baby's development. Specific steps must take place in order for the heart to form correctly. Often, congenital heart defects are a result of one of these crucial steps not happening at the right time, leaving a hole where a dividing wall should have formed, or a single blood vessel where two ought to be, for example. What causes congenital heart disease?
