Constipation is a symptom, not a disease
Constipation
Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. It is frequently caused by a disturbance of how the colon is working. The normal functions of the colon are to:
  • Remove water from the waste material that passes from the small intestine into the colon. Serve as a storage area for waste material. Help move and expel feces from the body.
Constipation may occur because:
  • Too much water is removed by the colon, causing dry or hard stools, Stool moves too slowly through the colon The patient is unable to expel feces.
Normal bowel habits among healthy people vary greatly from three times a day to three times a week. In some individuals, constipation may refer to infrequent bowel movements (less than 3 per week). While troublesome, constipation is usually not too serious. Constipation should be treated and corrected to reduce abdominal discomfort and other related symptoms and to prevent the development of complications. Untreated chronic constipation may lead to or aggravate more serious problems such as hemorrhoids or fecal impacting (partial blockage due to hard stool). Measures to Treat Constipation
The goal of treatment is to reestablish normal bowel habits without the use of laxatives. The treatment measures listed below are explain in more detail in the following paragraphs.

Constipation is passage or non passage of small hard feses, dry bowel movements
Constipation
Constipation is passage or non passage of small hard feses, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find it difficult and painful to have a bowel movement. Other symptoms of constipation include feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. Many people think they are constipated when, in fact, their bowel movements are regular. For example, some people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. In addition, some people naturally have firmer stools than others. At one time or another almost everyone gets constipated. Poor diet and lack of exercise are usually the causes. In most cases, constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding causes, prevention, and treatment will help most people find relief.
A simple warm water ENEMA will relieve constipation in just a few minutes.

It may develop early in life and persist into adulthood if left untreated, leading to various medical and psychological complications. However, constipation is not always easy to define because normal bowel movements vary from one child to another. Some may have several bowel movements each day, and others may have one every two or three days. As long as the feces are soft and produced with ease or no more than moderate effort, there is nothing to worry about. WHAT CAUSES CONSTIPATION?

Dr. Greene, my 7-week-old son hasn't pooped in three days. All he gets is breast milk. Is this normal? Is he constipated? I've heard both. If he is constipated, what should I do? Sometimes he acts like he's about to poop, his face gets red and he strains, but nothing comes out. Otherwise he's fine including his nursing. Thanks in advance.

As long as your son is in diapers, every single poop will be right there for you to see when the diaper is changed. During these years, the stools undergo several changes. The first poops are the thick, sticky, tarry meconium stools that consist partly of old skin cells that are shed and then swallowed while the baby is still inside you. During the first week these give way, in

What is an Constipation? Constipation is passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may have difficult and painful bowel movements. Constipation is not a disease. It is a symptom. Constipation is usually caused by a disturbance of how the intestines works. Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint in the United States. Constipation affects almost everyone at one time or another. It causes about 2 million annual visits to the doctor. What causes Constipation? The hard and dry stools of constipation occur when the intestines absorbs too much water. (Waste moves through the intestines and the intestines absorb water as the waste moves through it) This happens because the intestines's muscle contractions are slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the intestines too slowly.

Constipation
A decrease in stool frequency. Constipation has different meanings to different people, making a precise definition elusive. The medical community usually defines constipation as a decrease in stool frequency; however, patients may also consider constipation as difficult passage of feces, hardness of stool, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation. Constipation is more common in elderly personswho report more straining and sensation of anal blockagethan in middle-aged persons. Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint in the elderly, with up to 60% of elderly outpatients reporting laxative use. The overall prevalence of self-reported constipation is 24 to 37%, with women reporting more constipation than men. In the institutionalized elderly, up to 50% self-report constipation and up to 74% use laxatives daily.
Etiology
Age-related changes in anorectal physiology that predispose the elderly to constipation include increased rectal compliance and impaired rectal sensation (such that larger rectal volumes are needed to elicit the desire to defecate). Elderly persons also have reduced resting anal sphincter pressure and decreased maximal sphincter pressure, which predispose to fecal incontinence. (

Encopresis
Fecal soiling occurs when children leak stool, usually involuntarily, into their underwear, after they have been potty trained. Although soiling can be from fecal incontinence secondary to an anatomic problem, such as an anal malformation, meningomyelocele, muscle diseases, or after anal surgery, it is most commonly due to encopresis Although encopresis occurs equally in boys and girls in younger children, by school age, it is much more common in boys. Encopresis is a complication of chronic constipation , and it is fecal soiling with the loss of semi-formed or usually liquid stools, which may be foul smelling, into a child's underwear.

59. Comprehensive Overview Of Constipation
Comprehensive Overview of constipation, by William E Whitehead, PhD, Codirectorof the UNC Center for Functional GI Motility Disorders, Chapel Hill, NC.
http://www.med.unc.edu/wrkunits/2depts/medicine/fgidc/comprehensive_overview.htm
Comprehensive Overview of Constipation:
William E. Whitehead, PhD
Center Co-Director
What Causes Constipation?
Constipation can refer to either very slow movement of food residues through the colon (slow transit constipation) or difficulty passing bowel movements after they reach the rectum (outlet dysfunction). The specific symptoms of constipation are listed below. Doctors often diagnose constipation if patients have at least two of these symptoms more than a fourth of the time:
  • Straining Hard or lumpy stools Feeling that there is a blockage in the rectum that prevents bowel movements from passing Having to press around the anal opening Less than three bowel movements per week
The large intestine is a tube-shaped muscle, and short segments of this muscle can squeeze together (contract) to close off the inside. Most of the contractions are not coordinated with each other; they just move food residues back and forth so water can be absorbed. However, about 6 times per day, strong contractions begin in the right side of the large intestine and move progressively downstream pushing food residues towards the rectum; this is called a High Amplitude Propagating Contraction. If these strong contractions fail to occur, food residues can't move downstream and slow transit constipation results.

60. Constipation In Children
An article about constipation in children. Information on how to tell if you child has this, how it occurs and what can be done.
http://www.familydoctor.org/handouts/222.html
Information
from Your Family Doctor
Constipation in Children How do I know if my child is constipated?
Your child is constipated if 1 or more of the following are true:
  • He or she has fewer than 3 bowel movements each week.
  • The stools are hard, dry and unusually large.
  • The stools are difficult to pass.
What causes constipation? If your child doesn't drink enough water, milk or fruit juices, or if your child doesn't get a healthy diet or eat enough fiber, constipation may be the result. Fiber is found in foods such as cereals, grains, fruits and vegetables. If you give your child baby food for too long a time, or feed your child a diet high in meat, fatty foods or refined sugars (candy and desserts), your child will probably not be getting enough fiber. Constipation may also begin when you change your baby from breast milk or baby formula to whole cow's milk. If your small child often ignores the urge to have a bowel movement, he or she may become constipated. Children who are too busy playing or who are always rushing around may not find time to go to the bathroom. Some children don't like to use public bathrooms because of lack of privacy, dirty conditions or absence of toilet paper. Sometimes constipation happens after your child has been sick or has taken certain medicines.
