In modern psychology and psychiatry, hysteria is a feature of hysterical disorders in which a patient experiences physical symptoms that have a psychological, rather than an organic, cause; and histrionic personality disorder characterized by excessive emotions, dramatics, and attention-seeking behavior. Description Hysterical disorders Patients with hysterical disorders, such as conversion and somatization disorder experience physical symptoms that have no organic cause. Conversion disorder affects motor and sensory functions, while somatization affects the gastrointestinal, nervous, cardiopulmonary, or reproductive systems. These patients are not "faking" their ailments, as the symptoms are very real to them. Disorders with hysteric features typically begin in adolescence or early adulthood. Histrionic personality disorder Histrionic personality disorder has a prevalence of approximately 2-3% of the general population. It begins in early adulthood and has been diagnosed more frequently in women than in men. Histrionic personalities are typically self-centered and attention seeking. They operate on emotion, rather than fact or logic, and their conversation is full of generalizations and dramatic appeals. While the patient's enthusiasm, flirtatious behavior, and trusting nature may make them appear charming, their need for immediate gratification, mercurial displays of emotion, and constant demand for attention often alienates them from others.

SOMATOFORM DISORDERS Somatoform Disorders A patient believes that he/she has carpal tunnel syndrome or reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Another patient reports that he/she has numbness or paralysis in a limb. Another patient feels that he/she has a herniated lumbar disc, and a fourth patient is preoccupied with pain complaints. In all of these examples, the physical symptoms suggest a medical condition, but in the absence of objective clinical findings, the disorder is judged to be not physical but Somatoform. The disorder resembles a physical problem. The patient, however, either does not have the disorder or his/her symptoms are markedly more extreme than would be indicated by the physical findings.

Mental Health and Behaviour Psychosomatic Illness/Somatoform Disorder Audio File Somatoform disorders are what used to be called psychosomatic illnesses. They are characterized by symptoms for which no physical cause can be found. People with these disorders are not faking symptoms. They truly believe that they are caused by serious illness. Somatoform disorders include conversion disorder, hypochondriasis and somatization disorder. The cause of these disorders is unknown. Diagnosis is difficult because underlying physical causes for the symptoms must first be eliminated. There is no general agreement on how best to treat them. In conversion disorder, which used to be called hysteria, emotional conflict and extreme stress are unconsciously converted into physical symptoms. Symptoms usually appear as the loss of a physical function. They may include paralysis, seizures, false pregnancy, blindness or the inability to walk or speak. Episodes are usually of sudden onset, brief and may recur. Characteristically, people with conversion disorder do not seem to be appropriately alarmed by their severe symptoms. Conversion disorders usually occur in adolescence or early adulthood and are believed more common in women than men. Symptoms may help the person avoid dealing with an internal conflict, avoid a disliked activity or get support from others that he or she might not otherwise receive. They usually disappear when the situation that caused it improves. Psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and behavior modification, including relaxation training, have been helpful in some cases.

Staff Office Location The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry provides an array of child and adolescent psychiatric services both here at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and at the Institute of Living On the Connecticut Children's campus, consultations are provided to inpatients and outpatients with special medical needs. Children in crisis are seen either in our ambulatory service or in the emergency room. On the campus of the Institute of Living there are inpatient psychiatric services, partial hospitalization programs, a child guidance clinic and a special education school. Throughout the Hartford Hospital/IOL spectrum of care, children and adolescents are seen with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders including Depression, Developmental Disorders such as Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorders and Asperger's Syndrome, and Somatoform Disorders such as Conversion and Somatization, and Psychological Factors Affecting Medical Illness.
