The rib cage flexes during respiration to allow more air to enter than would be the case if it were rigid. Costochrondritis is a condition in which there is pain which is localized in the flexible joints (costochondral junctions) of the rib cage, where the ribs attach somewhat flexibly to the breast bone (sternum). For reasons unknown, adolescents going through puberty seem to be prone to developing inflammation of these joints, often after exercise or a blow to the chest. The pain may be sharp and sticking at first, but it usually becomes a dull aching pain. The most common sites of this pain are where the left fourth and fifth ribs attach to the sternum. This is right in the area of the heart, and therefore can create a good bit of anxiety in both the child and the parents. The key to diagnosis is that the pain can be reproduced by pressing on the involved area of the chest wall. This pain is not as sharp and intense as that of a rib fracture (which might be considered if there is a history of a blow to the chest). The treatment of costochondritis is anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen or naprosyn.

Costochondritis is a frequent cause of anterior chest pain. It is important to rule out cardiac disease as a source of the pain. The pathogenesis of costochondritis is unknown. The 2 nd to 5 th costal cartilages are most frequently affected. Palpation of the affected areas cause localized pain as well as widely referred pain. The condition occurs most frequently in women. Treatment involves the use of NSAIDS and application of heat. If pain is resistant to these therapies injection of the costochondral joint with local anesthetic and steroid might be of benefit.

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the ribs, usually where they attach to the breastbone or sternum. A person with costochondritis may have pain in the front of the rib cage that is dull and aching. Sometimes there is redness and swelling of the skin around the sternum. The pain gets worse if pressure is put on the sore ribs. It is very important to have all pain in and around the chest evaluated by your healthcare provider. Costochondritis is not life-threatening, but a heart attack is. Sometimes an injury to the chest wall will cause costochondritis. However, many times it is not known why the pain occurs. Treatment for Costochondritis includes:
    • anti-inflammatory medication like aspirin or ibuprofen ice packs over the sore areas avoidance of movements and activities that increase the pain rest until movement becomes comfortable and exercise, using slow stretching to avoid reinjury

I also noticed that the muscles that twitched alot would get sore. Of course I was then worried about als or something neurological. Went to neurologist, had neuro exam and emg-both normal. Also had Brain MRI-normal. he diagnosed benign fasiculation syndrome.I still have anterior chest pain, pain on rt.side of chest near sternum, various "sore" spots on rib cage, diarrhea, muscle fasiculations, fatigue, widespread muscle pain, back pain and although my horrible pubic/groin pain is alot better, I still feel discomfort there occasionally. My DR. is going to have me see a rheumitologist about possible fibromyalgia.Does my chest pain sound like costochondritis?fibro? Hi, I wrote a couple of days ago about costochondritis and many other symptoms. I looked into polychondritis, but I do not have any swelling or redness. and my ears, nose etc... are not involved. Also my Dr gave me a sed rate analysis(to check for inflamation) and it showed was low. Can costochondritis cause anterior pain throughout the ribcage as well as along the sternum? Also is this common in fibromyalgia?
thanks! Answer Posted By: NJC-R.N.-DC on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 You can have polychondritis, without the classic involvement of ears, nose etc. But, this is a rare condition and not likely to be your diagnosis. ItÂ’s just a thought.

    Definition
Costochondritis is an inflammation and associated tenderness of the cartilage (i.e., the costochondral joints) that attaches the front of the ribs to the breastbone.
    Description
Costochondritis causes pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone. Some patients fear they are having a heart attack . The most severe pain is usually between the breast and the upper abdomen. The pain may be greater when in sitting or reclining positions. Stress may aggravate this condition. Generally the third or fourth ribs are affected. However, any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected, and more often than not more than one site is involved. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. Costochondritis should be distinguished from Tietze Syndrome, which is an inflammation involving the same area of the chest, but also includes swelling.
    Causes and symptoms
The causes of costochondritis are not well-understood and may be difficult to establish. The most likely causes include injury, repetitive minor trauma, and unusual excessive physical activity.

    Costochondritis
    What is costochondritis?
Costochondritis is inflammation of the joint between a rib and the breastbone (sternum) or between the bony part of the rib and the rib cartilage. (Cartilage is a tough rubbery tissue that lines and cushions the surfaces of joints.) It is more common in women than men and tends to occur more often in people over 40 years old.
    How does it occur?
    Sometimes costochondritis is caused by:
    • an injury to the chest; for example, from falling or getting hit by something in the chest
    • an infection, such as a cold or flu.
Many times the cause can't be found.

    Costochondritis: Tietze Syndrome
Costochondritis, also known as Tietze Syndrome, is the inflammation of the cartilage where the ribs attach to the breast bone. Initially the symptoms are like those of a heart attack with pain moving from side to side of the chest and to the arms and neck. In fact, many sufferers rush to the emergency room fearing an attack. In the beginning the pain is usually worse and it hurts to breathe, wear a bra or move suddenly. Eventually the pain subsides to a dull, constant ache or tenderness in the ribs. The cause of this condition is usually unknown but it can be the result of trauma to the rib cage, a viral infection or part of an inflammatory disease. The symptoms usually disappear spontaneously within eight weeks but sometimes it takes up to a year and in some individuals it remains a chronic condition. When it is a chronic condition the pain seems to wax and wane and any sudden movement or lifting of heavy objects could make the condition worse. bodyOffer(237) Some sufferers start thinking that there is something wrong with their lungs when they start finding difficulty in breathing. However there is no reason for alarm. This happens due to the swelling around the ribs, the lungs cannot expand fully.

Used Infrasonic 8, for 10 minutes ( Body ), followed by 10 minutes ( Spirit ), twice a day. Within a month the pain was significantly decreased to the point where I discontinued getting local injections!!! Because the local tenderness continues, I continue using the QGM with the goal of being pain free. It’s now much easier to put clothing on, but the most significant improvement is the peace of mind associated with not having to get regular pain injections in a very tender area."
