Costochondritis
Costochondritis is simply inflammation of the rib joints, and attachments of intercostal muscles to the ribs, due to persistant "bracing" of the intercostal muscles. So far, the only known cause of this persistant tension of the intercostal muscles is chronic stress-effect storage in the hypothalamus. The well known fight or flight mechanism is the only known way the hypothalamus has to respond to ANY form of stressor. See the glossary and search engine for stress. The stressors, for which physically running or fighting are NOT appropriate, result in that readiness being stored in the hypothalamus. Nearly all stressors in our present day culture cannot be resolved by running or fighting. This makes breathing like trying to run with a muscle cramp in your leg. You can stop running but you cannot stop breathing. SO, when this tension is always there of course, eventually, the muscles get painful and their attachments become inflamed. Rolfing gives almost instant relief from this condition but is not a permanent cure since the cause must be eliminated for any permanent cure of anything chronic to be effective. The only permanent cure for this, yet known, is Skilled Relaxation (See this information in the glossary and search engine.) It takes 6-12 months to discharge all the tension stored in the muscles via turning down the fight or flight signals from the hypothalamus. SO, if one wants quicker results, although temporary; Chiropractic, Rolfing or a series of deep, total-body, therapeutic massages will be needed.

The first thing we need is a basic understanding of Costochondritis. I hope to give you an explanation as well as a personal glimpse into what it is like to have it. As I said on the index page I will not be giving credit here as that would be impossible. I have collected this information over time from various sources, source types, and from personal experience as well.
DEFINITION
Costochondritis is an insidious inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the breastbone generally affecting the third or fourth ribs. It produces anterior chest wall pain associated with tenderness of the sternum and rib regions. Any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected and more often than not, more than one site is affected.
ETIOLOGY
Costochondritis may be caused by trauma, as a result of a viral infection, or as part of an inflammatory disease process. Though, insidious in nature, repetitive minor trauma has been suggestive as the cause. But, generally the cause is unknown. Though I was 44 when I was diagnosed, it is usually diagnosed between the age of twenty and forty. It affects both sexes equally, but it is more prevalent in females.
SYMPTOMS
Costochondritis causes mild to severe pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone, which can be mistaken as a heart attack, usually between the breast and upper abdomen. It produces profuse tenderness, without swelling, to at least one joint of the rib cage. It tends to be the most noticeable when sitting or leaning back. The most painful stage tends to be in the beginning and can decrease in time. So, it may change to a dull constant ache, or the feeling of sore ribs. However, when it is a chronic condition, it just tends to keep recurring. Pain on palpation is fairly consistent but after about a year, only about a half of those with Costochondritis continue with any discomfort, while only about a third report tenderness on palpation. Stress is known to aggravate this condition.

Costochondritis-The Heart Attack That Wasn't
For many years I've seen the scenario repeat itself. The patient comes in with a panicked look on his/her face and says, "I think I may be having a heart attack."
The electrocardiogram is normal and the answers to my questions don't add up to heart problems. Less than thirty seconds on the exam table, however, yields the diagnosis-costochondritis.
What is this strange sounding ailment? Costochondritis is an inflammation in the cartilages where the ribs join the breastbone. Since we have to take breaths in and out of our lungs, there cannot be a direct rigid attachment of the ribs to the breastbone.

Ask the Doctor
Q: Costochondritis I was recently diagnosed with costochondritis. What is it exactly and how should I treat it? My doctor has said that I can continue with vigorous exercise as normal - is this really sensible with a fractured sternum? Rebecca Dr Trisha Macnair responds The prefix costo- simply means something which is to do with the ribs, the prefix chondr- means related to the cartilage and -itis means inflammation. So if you put all these together you get costochondritis which means inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs. In particular costochondritis affects the cartilage which joins the ribs to the breastbone. Mechanical problems or trauma usually cause it There are a variety of possible causes. Most common is trauma such as damage to the sternum. You mention a fractured sternum so I guess that in your case whatever broke your sternum also lead to inflammation in the tissues which surround it. Other causes include:
  • Mechanical pressure or stress on the sternum
  • Viral infections which cause inflammation of cartilage
Symptoms may be mistaken for heart disease Costochondritis causes tenderness over the breastplate and pain if you put pressure on the ribs in this area. The pain is made worse by anything which moves the ribs and pulls on the cartilage which connects them to the sternum.

This is my problem: I wasw diagnosed with costochondritis 4 yrs ago. In there beginning the pain was VERY severe, it tapered off after a couple months, now I only get flare-ups when I do something to aggravate it. For the past few days Ive been in a flare up, I think. I have pain right on the rib below my right breast (this is the initial site of injury) I have tenderness all on my right side which I usually get, BUT, I am having upper and middle back pain and shoulder/shoulder blade pain. Also some upper arm pain. If I press all around these areas it is tender to the touch. I have no abdominal pain. Is there a way I can tell if this really is costo and not gallbladder without going to the doctor? I am48 and very very healthy, non smoker/drinker and not overweight. I can sit down and eat a meal high in fat with NO problems. So Im assuming costo pain can radiate like this. Please advise, thank you.
