Email Address: dcg1010@aol.com Does anyone have any information on Cystic Hygromas and turners syndrome? I was 12 weeks pregnant and terminated my pregnancy due to these conditions. Plus the baby had a heart defect. I have two healthy children already and my husband and I are so scared to try again, we don't want to go through this a 2nd time. What are the chances that the baby will have a problem? Any information would be appreciated. By definition Cystic Hygroma means a “moist tumor” These types of tumors are benign and therefore are not related to cancer, which is what most people associate with the word tumor. Another common word that is used is Lymphangioma and so both terms are sometimes referred to as Lymphatic Malformations. So far no one has been able to determine what causes these conditions. Popular thought at the moment is that something goes wrong during development of the Lymphatic system early in pregnancy. Sometimes a hygroma will be picked up on ultrasound during pregnancy. (although our son’s wasn’t)

DuBose, M.S., RDMS, RT(R), FAIUM Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA December 98 - Student Case Study This case study presents a 35-year-old white female who was referred to the UAMS High-Risk Obstetrical Clinic due to advanced maternal age. The patient and her husband received genetic counseling. This was the patient's first pregnancy. She presented with no obvious complications. A routine obstetrical ultrasound exam was performed by an ARDMS certified obstetrical sonographer using a 3.5 MHz transabdominal transducer. The sonogram showed a single intrauterine pregnancy with an estimated gestational age of 17 weeks, 4 days (7.5 weeks). On examination of the fetal head a large cystic mass presented around the posterior of the neck. The nuchal fold measured 9.5mm and the nuchal ligament could be seen within the cystic mass. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of cystic hygroma. Cystic hygromas are caused by a delay or absence of the communication between the jugular lymph sacs and the internal jugular veins during fetal development. Late communication of the sacs to drain into the internal jugular vein results in the dilation of lymph sacs into cystic spaces, increased posterior nuchal measurement, and neck webbing. Complete obstruction of the jugular lymphatic is often associated with fetal hydrops, which is frequently fatal (Sanders, 1996). Another probable cause of cystic hygroma is abnormal budding of lymphatic endothelium. Increased nuchal thickness (nuchal lucency) can be detected at 10 weeks (Stevens 1998).
