Dandy-Walker Syndrome
The Dandy-Walker syndrome is a malformation of the brain that involves the maldevelopment of the cerebellum (hindbrain), associated with a cystic enlargement of this area, and frequently hydrocephalus. This malformation occurs in approximately one in 25,000 babies. It accounts for approximately 1 - 4% of cases of hydrocephalus and is seen more frequently in females than in males. There are a spectrum of abnormalities in this area that resemble the Dandy-Walker malformations. This may help explain why some of the newer descriptions of this abnormality refer to posterior fossa cysts and cyst-like formations rather than the classic Dandy-Walker malformation. The normal structures in the back of the brain include the cerebellum which lies on top of the brain stem and encloses a space referred to as the fourth ventricle. This space connects the ventricles of the upper brain (the cerebrum) through a narrow canal called the aqueduct of Sylvius. Normally, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows from the interior of the cerebrum through this canal through the fourth ventricle to bathe the outside of the brain and the spinal cord. In the Dandy-Walker malformation, the cerebellum is poorly developed, and a large cyst of CSF develops in this area. This cyst may lift up and displace the back portion of the brain as well as cause an internal obstruction of the normal flow of CSF with resultant hydrocephalus. These patients may have other abnormalities in the development of the brain, including decreased connections from one side of the cerebrum to the other side. Developmental malformations outside the nervous system may occur in approximately 30% of these patients. These other malformations include cleft lip, cleft palate, cardiac malformation, orthopedic and respiratory problems, and urinary structural abnormalities.

Dandy-Walker Syndrome
Dandy-Walker syndrome is a congenital brain malformation involving the fourth ventricle and cerebellum. It is defined as an enlargement of the fourth ventricle, an absence (partial or complete) of the cerebellar vermis (the narrow middle area between the two cerebral hemispheres), and cyst formation in the posterior fossa (the internal base of the skull). Hydrocephalus (increased intracranial pressure) may also be present. Symptoms which often occur in early infancy include slow motor development and progressive macrocrania (an abnormally enlarged skull). In older children symptoms of increased intracranial pressure such as irritability, vomiting and convulsions, and/or signs of cerebellar dysfunction such as ataxia and nystagmus (jerky eyes) may occur. The syndrome can appear dramatically or be totally asymptomatic. Other symptoms include increased head circumference, bulging occiput (the back of the head), cranial nerve dysfunction, and abnormal breathing patterns.

What is Dandy-Walker Syndrome? Dandy-walker syndrome is a congenital malformation involving cerebellum and the cavity in the brain called fourth ventricle . The disease is characterized by the abnormal widening of fourth ventricle, one of the cavities which Central Nervous system fluid (liqour cerebri) takes place and congenital agenezis of vermis (mid-portion of both cerebellar hemispheres). And Consequently a cystic dilatation of fourth ventricle towards the posterior cranial fossa occurs. In addition a clinical situation known as hydrocephalus (increased CNS-fluid and abnormal enlargement of head cicumference) may be present.

DANDY WALKER Home Page About Dandy Walker: Dandy Walker is known by many names: Dandy Walker Syndrome, Dandy Walker Malformation, Dandy Walker Cyst, Dandy Walker Variant. By definition, Dandy Walker is a congenital brain malformation typically characterized by incomplete formation of the cerebellar vermis, dilation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. In layman's terms, Dandy Walker is a cyst in the cerebellum (typically symmetrical) that is involved with the fourth ventricle. This may interfere with the body's ability to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain, resulting in hydrocephalus. Dandy Walker cysts are formed during early embryonic development, while the brain forms. The cyst in the cerebellum typically has several blood vessels running through it connecting to the brain, thereby prohibiting surgical removal. In most cases the cause of Dandy Walker is not known, though there are a few known cases resulting from autosomal recessive genes. Dandy Walker is generally discovered before birth, by ultrasound. Symptoms in the newborn may include a bulge or lump on the back of the head ("bulging occiput"); a "hair collar", or patch of long hair just above this lump; red pigmented skin in the area of the lump (similar to a "stork bite" birthmark); increased head circumference (if hydrocephalus is present); a downward gaze (if hydrocephalus is present). Other symptoms of the syndrome can also include congenital heart problems; malformations of the face, fingers, or toes; other central nervous system structural anomalies (often agenesis of the corpus callosum); abnormal breathing patterns; motor delays; hypotonia; learning problems; mental retardation; high pain tolerance; seizures; reflux; nystagmus (jerky eyes); ataxia; and other complications.

  • What is the origin of the term, Dandy Walker syndrome? WHAT IS IT? Dandy Walker syndrome is a rare type of abnormality in the brain that is present from birth. There are two main abnormalities that characterize Dandy Walker Syndrome, which are described in the following paragraphs: The first main abnormality found in Dandy Walker Syndrome is the presence of a large cyst on the fourth ventricle which causes it to be grossly misshapen. A cyst is an abnormal lump, swelling, or sac that contains fluid, a part solid material, or a gas, and is covered with a membrane. A membrane is a thin layer of flexible tissue that covers something. Ventricles are openings in the brain that produce cerebrospinal fluid, which is the cushiony fluid that protects the brain and spine. There are several ventricles in the brain, pictured below: As you can see, the fourth ventricle is located in the back, bottom part of the brain. It connects the ventricles in the cerebrum (the upper part of the brain) through a narrow canal called the cerebral aqueduct. The cerebrospinal fluid comes through the fourth ventricle to bathe and cushion the outside of brain and spinal cord. In Dandy-Walker syndrome, the fourth ventricle (and other ventricles in the brain) becomes abnormally wide, which leads to an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the head known as hydrocephalus. The second main abnormality found in Dandy Walker syndrome is an underdeveloped cerebellum. The cerebellum is an area in the back, bottom part of the brain that plays an important role in movement and coordination. In the picture above, the cerebellum is the more orange looking area directly behind the fourth ventricle. In real life, of course, the cerebellum does not look orange, but gray.

She is in an early childhood developmental school. This school has "peer" models of other children who do not have any "health problems". She appears to enjoy this excursion each day. This is what has brought to my attention the fact that i need to address these issues.
thank you for your time and expertise.

Dear Ms. Wallace, As you know, Dandy Walker Syndrome is a congenital malformation of the brain, and it is often associated with other central nervous system problems. This condition requires treatment directed toward whatever anomalies typify it with a partcular child. I am not going to attempt a direct answer to your question, but instead am referring you to a web site sponsored by the National Institute of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/patients/disorder/dandywak/dandy-walker.htm.

Michael, Las Vegas Like most new mothers, I couldn't wait to hold my newborn child. I was going to count his fingers and toes, run my fingers through his soft curls and look to see whom he resembled most. In my dreams nothing was to go wrong. I didn't know about such things as NICU, neonatalogists, or contractures. My son was born without much trouble, but from that moment on his troubles began. Michael was intubated immediately after birth, and rushed to the neonatal nursery. My husband and I caught a quick glimpse of him as the nurse rushed by. We had no idea how critically ill our son was. For that matter, neither did the doctors! I turned to my greatest source of information - my computer. I knew I had a medically fragile child and life was going to be filled with many challenges. I soon found an on-line discussion group of parents' worldwide whose children had a variety of special needs. Our Kids http://wonder.mit.edu/ok/ http://members.aol.coml/xmtm/pagel.htm ). I found an on-line page - The Directory of National Genetic Support Groups - listing genetic support groups throughout the world.
