More than 4 million people in the U.S. are afflicted with dementia, with Alzheimer's Disease being the most com mon form. Deciding when to limit or stop driving can be a confusing issue for individuals diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers. Earlier diagnosis and better medications may allow people to drive longer, further complicating the decision. Most information about dementia warns against driving, but does not describe when or how to stop. The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., the MIT Age Lab and Connecticut Community Care, Inc., have developed a guide to Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia and Driving as a tool to help individuals and caregivers determine when it is time to stop driving. and I have no solid ground to stand on." Quotation of an elderly woman with end-stage Alzheimer's disease who I was blessed to visit during one of her "window" moments. Perhaps this gift she so eloquently shared with me that evening, as no other lesson, has taught me what it may be like to have this disease. She died several months later - but her life, and her gift, will remain solidly implanted in my heart forever.

Dementia Forum When my father was diagnosed with vascular or multi-infarct dementia, that's all I was told nothing about how it progresses, what to do to make his life and mine easier and certainly nothing about how he now sees the world. The more I learn about dementia the more I have also realized that its prevelance seems to be growing. The word dementia includes a number of cognitive illnesses, including Alzheimer's Disease, Pick's Disease and Frontal Lobe Dementia. Therefore I decided to devote a link to dementia. I'll post all the information I find. If you have information you would like to have posted here, e-mail me directly at karenh@caregiver.on.ca On My Mind describes my current caregiving experience with my father who resides in a long-term care facility near me. F01 Vascular dementia
Clinical description and diagnostic guidelines
Vascular (formerly arteriosclerotic) dementia , which includes multiinfarct dementia , is distinguished from dementia in Alzheimer's disease Diagnostic guidelines The diagnosis presupposes the presence of a dementia as described above. Impairment of cognitive function is commonly uneven, so that there may be memory loss, intellectual impairment, and focal neurological signs. Insight and judgement may be relatively well preserved. An abrupt onset or a stepwise deterioration, as well as the presence of focal neurological signs and symptoms, increases the probability of the diagnosis; in some cases, confirmation can beprovided only by computerized axial tomography or, ultimately, neuropathological examination. Associated features are: hypertension, carotid bruit, emotional lability with transient depressive mood, weeping or explosive laughter, and transient episodes of clouded consciousness or delirium , often provoked by further infarction. Personality is believed to be relatively well preserved, but
