Diphtheria is a very contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that mainly affects the tonsils, throat, nose, and skin. In more serious cases, it can attack the nerves and heart. The bacterium produces a toxin (poison) that is carried in the bloodstream. Who gets diphtheria and how is it spread? Anyone who is not immunized against diphtheria can get the disease. Diphtheria is spread to others through close or direct contact with the secretory fluids from an infected person. Diphtheria is also acquired through breathing the bacteria after an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is also thought to be spread by contact with personal items, such as blankets or articles of clothing that were contaminated by a person with diphtheria. What are the symptoms of diphtheria and when do they start? There are two types of diphtheria. One type involves the nose and throat, and the other type involves the skin. Early symptoms include a sore throat and a low-grade fever. A membrane that forms over the throat and tonsils can make it hard to swallow. The infection also causes the lymph glands and tissue on both sides of the neck to swell to an unusually large size. When the skin is involved, there may be pustular sores that are painful, swollen, and red, resembling impetigo. Some people can be infected and spread the disease without appearing ill. Symptoms usually appear two to four days after infection.

The packages are printed showing 12 02 1999 instead of 12 02 1998, the correct expiry date. It is possible that this vaccine has been administered to patients subsequent to 12 02 1998. The Department has arranged for samples to be tested by the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control to see whether the vaccine has retained its potency. The result of these tests is expected at the end of July. If the results suggest loss of potency, we will contact you again. In the meantime you may wish to identify any patients who have received this vaccine subsequent to 12 02 1998 so that they can be offered revaccination should the tests show that the batch has lost its potency. If such patients are travelling before the end of July to areas where Diphtheria is endemic they should be offered revaccination now. About 1 person out of every 10 who gets diphtheria dies of it. WHAT IS TETANUS? Tetanus, or lockjaw, results when wounds are infected with tetanus bacteria, which are often found in dirt. The bacteria in the wound make a poison which causes the muscles of the body to go into spasms. In the United States, four out of every 10 persons who get tetanus die of it.
