The Down's Baby Creed
My face may be different but my feelings are the same.
I laugh and I cry and take pride in my gains.
I was sent here among you to teach you to love,
As God in the Heavens looks down from above. To Him I'm not different, His love knows no bounds.
It's those here among you in cities and towns,
That judge me by standards that man has imparted.
But this family I've chosen will help me get started For I'm one of the children, so special and few, That came here to learn the same lessons as you. That love is acceptance, it must come from the heart; We all have a purpose though not the same start. The Lord gave me life to live and embrace, And I'll do it as you do but at my own pace.
What is Down Syndrome?
Down Syndrome is a genetic abnormality where a person has an "extra" 21st chromosome (also known as Trisomy 21). There are three types of Down Syndrome: Trisomy 21 (standard), Mosaicism, and Translocation . The most common is Trisomy 21. The risk for a Down Syndrome child increases with a woman's age, however, Down Syndrome children are born more often to younger women (due to the fact younger women have more children).

Celebrating Life with Down Syndrome
Brian Skotko and his sister, Kristin Brian Skotko denies that he is the coauthor of a book. There is his name, right on the cover, but the 23-year-old medical student says the "true authors" are the individuals with Down syndrome whose tales of triumph fill the pages of Common Threads: Celebrating Life with Down Syndrome. "We are just privileged to be their voices," he explains. Skotko's sister, Kristin, has Down syndrome, a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. So does Kidder's son, Jordan. The college student and the Michigan publisher discovered each other through Kidder's sister, who was Skotko's high school chemistry teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. A freshman research project on Down syndrome families, which Skotko did for a cultural anthropology class at Duke, showed him that there were primarily two kinds of books about Down syndrome: how-to manuals for parents and caregivers and scientific treatises on mutations of chromosome 21. "Both serve a purpose, but they are missing the inspirational thread, the stories of people with Down syndrome who succeed despite their limitations and the low expectations of the world around them," says Skotko.

Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation
A better vision The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation (DSEF) is a part of the non-profit Center for Natural Health Research and is devoted to looking into the best, natural, methods to help those who have both Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and various forms of epilepsy (including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome). These methods include clinical nutrition, naturopathy, manipulative techniques, exercise, and other natural methods intended to improve the quality of life for those with Down syndrome who also suffer with seizures. The Down Syndrome-Epilepsy Foundation is directed up by Robert J. Thiel, Ph.D., N.M.D. . Dr. Thiel is not a medical doctor. He is a doctor of nutrition (Ph.D. nutrition science) and a doctor of naturopathic medicine (N.M.D.). Dr. Thiel believes that DSEF has a better vision for those with both disorders. Why? Because he believes that natural is better. Because he believes that many health professionals and therapists have expectations for the disabled that are too low. Because he believes combining nutrition, exercise, and parental motivation results in better outcomes. Because he believes that science and common-sense show that the combination of natural interventions is the most logical to pursue. Because he has met with many of the so-called experts and researchers in this field and found many of their approaches lacking. He does not believe that he, nor DSEF, have all the answers, but does believe that in many respects, DSEF is at the forefront for practical research to benefit those with both Down syndrome and epilepsy.
