Drooling , Salivation and Nausea Drooling can occur for a number of reasons in cats. Probably the most commonly identified reasons are gum or teeth disorders. Oral ulcers can sometimes cause excessive salivation. Problems that lead to nausea, such as renal failure or gastrointestinal disease also cause excessive salivation. Some cats salivate excessively when they are nervous or stressed. This is a common reaction to oral medications and application of flea control products, too. Your vet can help sort through these possibilities and hopefully find a treatable cause. Foaming at the mouth or excessive salivation is common when cats have ingested something more noxious than they expected it to be, when they are nervous, when they have been sprayed with a spray containing alcohol (many flea sprays are alcohol based), when they are nauseous and with a few diseases such as dental disease and calicivirus. There are probably other causes. A brief episode is probably related to ingesting something that was upsetting. I have seen this after one of my cats ate a spider. Licking toads will do this, too. Hair balls are obviously one cause of feeling nauseous. If you live in an area with heartworms it is another cause of the hacking and vomiting problem some cats have. Inflammatory bowel disease is another. Your vet can help sort through these, too. In general it is a good idea to consider pursuing a diagnosis of vomiting if it is occurring frequently and coughing is almost always abnormal.

Management of Drooling, 1/2003

Drooling is a common problem associated with cerebral palsy. The presence of drooling has both health and social consequences. The production of saliva is an important health need in that it plays a role in the digestion of food and functions to maintain the hygiene of the mouth. In cerebral palsy, there is not an overproduction of saliva; the problem is in the swallowing mechanism. Because of the brain injury leading to cerebral palsy, there is poor coordination of the movement of saliva to the throat by the tongue and to the contraction of the muscles of the throat. This is an automatic activity not requiring conscious action. When the automatic mechanism is interrupted due to brain damage, saliva accumulates in the mouth and spills over.
A recent review summarized the present status of the management of drooling. In summary, the article reports:
Surgery: There are several surgical techniques that have been used. These include removal of salivary glands and/or ducts and the repositioning of the ducts so they drain to the back of the mouth. There are very few surgeons who utilize these techniques since the overall functional results have not been satisfactory. In very selected circumstances, diminishing the rate of saliva production by gland removal and then the use of medication has provided relief from very excessive drooling. In general the surgical approach to relief from drooling has not proven to be very useful.

London, Jack Told in the Drooling Ward
Genre Short Story Keywords Adoption Disability Empathy Hospitalization ... Patient Experience Summary The story is told by a man living in "the drooling ward," part of a California mental institution. The narrator has been in the ward over 25 years; he helps feed and care for the others. He calls himself a "feeb"feeble mindedbut believes himself to be better than the droolers and certainly better than the stuck-up "epilecs" who though they seem normal throw such terrible fits. He feels as if he could get released from the hospital at any time, but he would rather stay. He tells of the two times he left the hospital. The first time, he was adopted by a couple that ran a ranch. He was forced to do many chores and the man beat him. He snuck off and returned to the home. The second time, he ran away with two "epilecs," but they were hungry and afraid of the dark so returned. Commentary London's attempt to get inside the mind of his narrator is intriguing. The narrator evokes both sympathy and laughter. London can't quite make him a serious character. The reader is positioned as an interpreter of the narrator. We know better than to say "epilecs" or "droolers" and feel skeptical of the narrator's claims that he could leave at any time. London's tale of mental retardation is thus different from other, similar tales that make the patient's view the limit of knowledge, in which there is no outside, rational view available. See, for example, Bessie Head's novel, A Question of Power (Pantheon, New York, 1974). Though London attempts to get inside the mind of his narrator, he remains aloof and judgmental.

And some breeds, like Saint Bernards and Newfoundlands, drool almost all the time. But if your pet is normally dry, yet suddenly starts flowing like a faucet, you can bet there is something wrong. This is especially true for cats, who generally drool less than dogs. "As soon as I see a drooling cat, I'm thinking ulcers in the mouth or immune system disease," says Mark Riehl, D.V.M., a veterinarian in private practice in Bristol, Tennessee. Cats with feline AIDS, leukemia, or even the flu will sometimes get mouth sores that cause them to drool, he says. Kidney problems can also cause sores and drooling in cats as well as dogs.

Drooling (Sialorrhea)
What is it?
Drooling, dribbling or sialorrhea is a medical condition. It is not a disease, or an illness, but may be a symptom of an underlying illness or condition. Drooling is the spillage of saliva from the mouth or oral cavity and is often a problem in neurologically impaired children who have muscle weakness or incoordinated swallowing muscles. Drooling is an inability to swallow or hold saliva in the oral cavity and is rarely associated with an over production of saliva. Some medications such as, Clomazepan may worsen drooling as a side effect. Drooling occurs if a person cannot swallow their saliva faster than it is produced or can not co-ordinate their lips etc to hold the saliva in their mouths prior to swallowing it is not generally due to an `over production' of saliva. Drooling can cause many different problems for both the child and their carers, for example:
  • increased care (increased clothing/ bib changes) soiling of household furnishings, toys, school supplies (including computers)

SURGICAL TREATMENT OF drooling. The When present, drooling is a difficultproblem in persons with developmental brain disorders. drooling
http://www.nettally.com/ucp/surgical.htm
SURGICAL TREATMENT OF DROOLING The September 1995 issue of the journal Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology included a report of an Australian study on the "Long Term Outcome of Saliva-control Surgery" by K. Webb et al (Vol. 37/ No.9, Pgs. 755-762). The following summarizes and comments on some of the highlights of that report. When present, drooling is a difficult problem in persons with developmental brain disorders. Drooling is normal in infancy but usually subsides around 18 months of age. Persistence beyond four years of age is not considered normal (Crysdale 1989). It is generally accepted that drooling occurs because of a defect in the oral or voluntary phase of swallowing, resulting in an overflow of secretions which builds up in the front of the mouth (Shott et al. 1989). Any treatment which reduces the amount of drooling must also consider the several important functions of saliva; these include lubrication of the material being swallowed, the digestion of starch, oral hygiene and dental protection. It is important that the benefits of therapy outweigh its disadvantages, particularly for the long run. Treatments proposed for saliva control and drooling include behavioral conditioning, oromotor training, drug therapy and several types of surgical procedures. Behavioral and oromotor training have been reported to give modest improvement but usually, these procedures do not provide long term beneficial results. Drug therapies are generally directed at decreasing the amount of saliva and usually result in an unacceptable dry mouth with resultant swallowing difficulties and poor oral hygiene.

Ananova: Hoddle drooling over golden oldies Glenn Hoddle hailed Teddy Sheringham after his late winner lifted Spurs into fifth place in the Premiership. Sheringham headed home with just five minutes left on the clock to complete a spirited fightback against Bolton. With Gus Poyet and Les Ferdinand grabbing the other goals, it meant Spurs' scoring trio had a combined age of 103. But Hoddle praised his golden oldies, particularly reigning Footballer of the Year Sheringham. "I am delighted with Teddy's form," said Hoddle. "If there had been a camera on him for the 90 minutes of this game then I don't think I have ever seen Teddy work so hard, and that is a great example from a captain. "He knows he is coming to the end of his career and has two or three seasons maximum, and I think he is enjoying every minute of it. The amount of hard work he is putting in is a great example to the players. "The likes of Teddy, Gus Poyet and Les Ferdinand, if they show that hard work and respect for themselves and for everyone they are working with, then that is the standard that is set for the youngsters, and that has got to be good for the future of the club. "Teddy and Gus have a love for the game. Their passion and desire means they put in performances like these.

Considerations:
Drooling is due to either excess production of saliva or by an inability to retain or swallow saliva.
There is always a potential in those who have a drooling problem to inhale into the lungs saliva, food, or fluids. However, this is unlikely unless the body's normal defense mechanisms (gagging and coughing ) are damaged by poisons or disease.
Common Causes:
There are no common causes of drooling in adults.
Drooling in young infants is normal and is highly unlikely to be associated with complications.
Possible causes: Diseases Environmental
  • envenomation ( snake bite or scorpion sting) esophageal injury foreign body in the esophagus or airway pesticide poisoning rabies tetanus
Drugs
  • clonazepam ethionamide haloperidol nicotine - transdermal
Other causes of drooling in children Note: There may be other causes of drooling. This list is not all inclusive, and the causes are not presented in order of likelihood. The causes of this symptom can include unlikely diseases and medications. Furthermore, the causes may vary based on age and gender of the affected person, as well as on the specific characteristics of the symptom such as location, quality, time course, aggravating factors, relieving factors, and associated complaints. Use the Symptom Analysis option to explore the possible explanations for drooling, occurring alone or in combination with other problems.

Drooling Over Art Supplies and Chinese Food
Monday, 4 May 1998
I finally started doing those pen-and-ink drawing excercises from Rendering in Pen and Ink last night. I started out with a Hunt's Crow Quill (#102) nib, but found it too scratchy and thin, so I switched to one of the other Hunt's nibs (#107) I'd picked up on my last trip to Pearl Paint , and found it to give a good, smooth line. I filled most of a 9" x 12" sheet of smooth finish bristol with line control excercises (nothing exciting, just parallel lines at various angles), and then found myself doodling around the edges of the page like I used to. I think it was just the pleasure of making marks on paper with a pen that did it. Today I went back to Pearl to pick up more pen nibs. The book recommends various nibs from Gillott, but Pearl doesn't carry those. The clerk recommended I try a calligraphy supplier. So I picked up more Hunt nibs two each of #22, 56, 99, and 108 and a couple of the larger holders. I'm looking for something that makes a wider line than the #107, and I think the #56 and 99 look promising. I also spent far too much time just wandering about the store drooling over things I want to buy even though I have no immediate use for them. There was a book on sumi painting that looked pretty good; I may try working on that after I've built up my pen-and-ink skills. And I was pleased to see that the manufacturer of Claybord has a line of inexpensive masonite-like supports, both plain and pre-gessoed. That'll come in handy when I start working with paint again.
