Because dry eye syndrome can cause excessive blinking, its presence may preventdiagnosis of essential blepharospasm. dry eye and blepharospasm.
http://www.blepharospasm.org/blephar2.html
Dry eye and blepharospasm
One of the reasons that essential (dystonic) blepharospasm frequently fails to be diagnosed is the fact that dry eye (which can itself cause blepharospasm) often precedes and/or occurs concomitantly with blepharospasm (Elston et al . The following article by J. Daniel Nelson, M.D. describes these two disorders and how to distinguish them. The term "Dry Eye" refers to a group of diseases which cause symptoms of grittiness or foreign body sensation, burning and dryness. These diseases can be divided into two general categories: those diseases in which tear secretion is inadequate or decreased and those in which tear secretion is adequate or normal. The term "keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)" is used to describe those conditions in which tear secretion is decreased. The most common cause of KCS is Sjogren's syndrome, which is characterized by dry eyes, dry mouth and a systemic autoimmune disease. In secondary Sjogren's syndrome, there is a definable systemic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus or scleroderma. In primary Sjogren's syndrome, there is no definable systemic disease. Other causes of keratoconjunctivitis sicca include graft vs. host disease seen following bone marrow transplantation, AIDS and lymphoma involving the lacrimal glands. The most common cause of dry eye with normal tear secretion is blepharitis (bleph - eyelid; itis - inflammation). Blepharitis can be associated with skin diseases such as seborrhea or rosacea or can occur by itself. In this condition there is either a lack of oily secretion or an abnormality of the oil which leads to inadequate coverage of the aqueous layer, or both. This results in increased evaporation of tears, as well as an increased ability of environmental pollutants to contaminate the tear film.

dry eye. Keratitis sicca, the medical term for dry eye (it actually means drycornea ) is a common, annoying condition that is potentially serious.
http://www.triadpublishing.com/eyecarereports/dryeye.htm
A topic from Triad's Eye Care Notes... DRY EYE Most people have enough tears to keep their eyes properly lubricated. If they don't, the surface of the eyes can dry out. Keratitis sicca, the medical term for dry eye (it actually means "dry cornea") is a common, annoying condition that is potentially serious. Dry eye is more common in women than in men, and in middle age and the elderly than in younger people. Although no permanent cure exists, there are many treatments that can help alleviate the problem. What Causes Dry Eye? The most likely cause of your dry eyes is that you do not produce enough tears. It may also be caused by excessive tear evaporation, as may happen if you do not blink frequently enough or if your eyelids do not close well (causing exposure keratitis), especially when you sleep. Dry eyes may be related to some medical conditions, such as arthritis or sever inflammatory mucous membrane disease (such as pemphigoid), or they could be part of Sjogren's (SHOW-grenz) syndrome, in which many of the body's normally moist membranes (as in the mouth and nose) lose moisture. Reduced tear secretion can also result from alcohol and some medications (antihistamines, antidepressents, sleeping pills and others). Symptoms The dryness usually leads to a constant burning, stinging, itching, or a gritty foreign body sensation. Your eyes may be sensitive to light and stay red and bloodshot a good deal of the time. These symptoms tend to be worse in dry climates, in dry and windy weather, and late in the day. Using a hair dryer may affect your eyes, as will the dryness in air-conditioned and heated rooms, especially if you are in the direct flow of a vent or in the dehumidified cabin of an airplane.

What Are Natural Tears? What Can Cause Dry Eye? Do You Suffer from Dry Eye?
What Is Dry Eye? Dry eye is a term used to describe a group of different diseases and conditions that result from inadequate wetting and lubrication of the eye. Although millions of people experience it, dry eye is not always easy to diagnose; it can easily be mistaken for other conditions such as infections or allergies. Believe it or not, excessive tearing caused by crying, cold weather, etc., can actually cause dry eye symptoms.
What Are Natural Tears? Tears are a lot more complicated than they seem. They are the body's natural mechanism for protecting the surface of the eye from infection and from the corrosive effects of dirt, dust, and other airborne particles. They help to create a smooth corneal surface so vision stays clear and undistorted, and your eyes stay comfortable. Tears provide a wet, lubricated surface that sits atop the corneal epithelium (surface of the eye) There are three layers to the tear film. The oily, outer layer prevents evaporation. The middle layer is more watery. The inner layer contains mucous, and forms the bond between the tear film and the corneal epithelium.

“dry eye” (More formally known as “Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca”or “KCS”). WHY TEARS ARE GOOD. There are many causes of dry eye.
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_kcs__dry_eye_.html
“Dry Eye”
(More formally known as “Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca” or “KCS”) WHY TEARS ARE GOOD
We can all imagine the discomfort of dry, irritated eyes and the soothing provided by eye drops. Tears are essential to the comfort of our eyes but they do more than just provide lubrication. Tears contain anti-bacterial proteins, salts, sugars, and even oxygen to nourish the eye. Tears flush away irritants and infectious agents that are constantly getting in our eyes. Since the outer portions of the eye does not have a blood supply, the tears must bring sugars and oxygen and must remove metabolic waste. Tears consist of oil secreted by the eyelid glands, mucus, and (mostly) water. Tears are secreted by two “lacrimal” glands in dogs and cats: one just above the eye and another in the third eyelid (or so-called “nictating membrane”). Without tears, eyes become irritated, the conjunctival tissues around the eyes get red, the cornea itself in time will turn brown in an effort to protect the eye, and a gooey, yellow discharge predominates. Blindness can result. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a fancy way of saying the eye is dry. “Kerato” refers to the cornea or clear covering of the eye that faces the outside world. “Conjunctivae” are the moist pink membranes of the eye socket. “It is” means inflammation and “sicca” means dry. KCS means inflamed, dry cornea and conjunctiva. It occurs when there is a deficiency in the water portion of the tear film which normally accounts for 95% of the tear volume. Without the water, one is left with oil and mucus; hence, the gooey yellow eye discharge characteristic of this condition.

Millions Suffer from Dry Eye
Ouch! The name says it all — dry eye is frustrating and uncomfortable. If you have this common condition, you’ll recognize the following symptoms:
  • Dry and/or gritty sensations
  • Itching and burning
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness
  • Mucous discharge
  • Pain and blurred vision (in severe cases)
Tears, your eyes’ natural lubricants, protect the cornea, wash out debris and keep the eye moist. When you don’t produce enough tears or they evaporate too quickly, your eyes become irritated and dry eye symptoms can develop. If left untreated, severe cases can eventually damage the cornea. Dry eye has many causes, including:
  • Aging
  • Certain systemic diseases
  • Environmental factors
  • Medication side effects
Although dry eye isn’t curable, you don’t have to live with the condition’s unpleasant symptoms. The GenTeal family of lubricating eye drop and gel products from Novartis Ophthalmics brings you doctor-recommended relief for mild, moderate and severe symptoms. Home Products What is Dry Eye?

http://www.dandersoncompany.com/HealthInfo.asp
Health Information Dry Eyes What is Dry Eye? Dry Eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), stems from an imbalance in the quantity or the quality of tears. The function of tears is to bathe, lubricate, and nourish the surface of the eye. This helps keep the cornea and conjunctiva healthy. The cornea is the part of the eye that allows light to enter the eye. The conjunctiva is a membrane that covers the white part of the eye. A healthy cornea will get all its oxygen and nutrients through the three-layered "tear film." The normal tear film consists of three layers. The outer layer contains oil, which reduces evaporation of the remaining layers of tears. The middle layer is 98% water. The inner layer, which has direct contact with the cornea, is made of mucous and helps to keep the water layers on the surface of the eye. The breakdown of any or all of the three-layered tear film leads to dry eye, which results in lack of nutrients and oxygen to the cornea.

Diagnosis and Treatment
What is Dry Eye? Simply put, dry eye is the result of not being able to produce enough tears to keep the eye comfortable. Without a film of tears, spread over the eye by a blink, good vision is not possible. The symptoms include stinging or burning eyes, scratchiness, stringy mucus around the eyes, irritation from smoke or wind, excess tearing or difficulty wearing contact lenses Causes Tear production normally decreases as we age. Although dry eye can occur in men and women, it is more common in women, particularly after menopause. Dry eye can also be associated with arthritis as well as a variety of over-the-counter and prescription medications. Because of thisand the fact that people with dry eye are more prone to the toxic side effects of eye medicationsit is important that you tell your doctor the names of all the medications you are taking. This is especially true if you are taking diuretics, betablockers, antihistamines, sleeping pills, pain relievers, medication for "nerves" or even alcohol. Diagnosis and Treatment A simple eye examination by an ophthalmologista physician who specializes in care of the eyecan usually detect dry eye. Sometimes, tests are performed such as placing filter-paper strips under the lower lids to measure tear production under various conditions.

http://www.petdiabetes.org/cataract.htm
Cataracts and Dry Eye What is a
Cataract
Signs Treatment ... Take our survey What is a Cataract?
The lens of the eye is transparent, allowing light to pass through it and be focused on the retina. A cataract is an opaqueness or cloudiness in the lens that prevents light from reaching the retina. A cataract usually starts out as very small opaque areas, then becomes larger. How rapidly the cataract becomes larger varies greatly depending on many factors including the location of the cataract within the lens, the age of the animal, and the cause of the cataract. The size of the cataract will effect how much vision your pet has.
A very serious side effect of uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes is cataract formation. Diabetes-induced cataract formation is much more common in dogs than in cats. Not all diabetic dogs develop cataracts, but most do. Some dogs form cataracts so quickly that their vision is impaired and that's why the owner takes them to the vet, and then the diabetes is diagnosed. For other dogs, cataracts may form within weeks of diagnosis, or it may take months, or even years for cataracts to develop.
If your vet tells you that your pet is developing a cataract, or has cataracts, it is very important that you get a referral to a certified veterinary ophthalmologist and have the specialist examine your pet's eyes. The ophthalmologist has special education, training, and equipment that will allow him or her to give your pet's eyes a full examination. The lens is not the only structure involved - the health of the entire eye should be evaluated.

March 7, 2003
SAN FRANCISCO – Whether you work in an office or on a construction site, remember to take care of your eyes while at work. Think existing safety legislation and educational programs protect workers? Think again. Each working day in the United States, more than 2,000 employees sustain job-related eye injuries, making workplace injury a leading cause of ocular trauma, visual loss and blindness.
If you’re one of the millions of Americans who spend a lot of time in front of a computer monitor, you’ve probably experienced eye problems from time to time. While computer screens don’t damage vision, eyestrain and dry eye are symptoms from which workers need relief.
To mark March’s designation as Workplace Eye Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology – the Eye M.D. Association – wants to remind Americans of the importance of wearing proper eye protection in the industrial workplace, as well as provide practical advice for dealing with computer eyestrain and dry eye.
About 90 percent of workplace eye injuries can be prevented if workers wear appropriate eyewear.
