Causes
Lack of humidity in your home or workplace may be the source of your dry eyes. Get an hygrometer to measure the humidity, then add a humidifier to raise the level. Computer use or other close work where you need to concentrate can cause or exacerbate dry eye syndrome. When you concentrate you don't blink as often and therefore your eyes aren't being lubricated. Try to blink more frequently and take frequent breaks. Contact lenses are another possible cause. Talk to your eye specialist.

by Optometrist David Crystal BSc MCOptom DipTp New treatments for dry eyes You should have an examination to determine whether you actually have dry eyes and if so which type. Around 80% of patients have dry eyes due to lack of tear volume ( aqueous deficiency ) and 20% have dry eyes by evaporation where plug treatment is inappropriate. For evaporative dry eyes a different treatment is prescribed. Many patients have both aqueous and evaporative components to their dry eye, so tests are needed. A fluorescent yellow dye is painlessly introduced into the tears of each eye. Viewed with a microscope under blue light, any area on the surface of the eye damaged by dehydration glows brightly. Tear evaporation rate is counted as the number of seconds after a blink before the tear film de-stabilises and tear volume assessed by analysing the "pool" of tears clinging along the edge of the lower eyelids. The dynamic flow of tears over the surface of your eye following a blink and the size of your tear ducts are also noted.

CORNEA Overview
Examples of common conditions that affect the cornea

Overview
The cornea is the transparent tissue on the front part of the eye. Not only is it important for the structural integrity of the eye, but its curvature and clarity helps the eye focus. A healthy cornea is required for normal vision. Diseases and injuries of the cornea are an important cause of blindness in our community. All physicians at EyeHealth Northwest are trained to diagnose and care for patients with corneal problems. In addition, two fellowship trained corneal specialists ( Dr. Roger Saulson and Dr. Kerry Hagen ) are on staff for consultation and surgery in difficult cases.

Pterygium

Pterygium A pterygium is a wing-shaped fibrovascular connective tissue that grows from conjunctiva (a clear membrane that covers the white if the eye and the inner eyelids) over the cornea. Sometimes referred to as a "Texas cataract" (it is not a cataract), it is seen in individuals who spend time outdoors such as farmers, fisherman and skiers. It is felt that exposure to sun, wind, and ultraviolet light promotes growth of this tissue. Conservative treatment includes artificial tears and wearing sunglasses. If vision is affected, the tissue can be surgically removed.

dry eye Syndrome dry eye Syndrome is a collection of symptoms that result frominsufficient quantity or quality of tears. What Causes dry eye Syndrome?
http://eyecare.freeyellow.com/dryeye.htm
Dry Eye Syndrome Dry Eye Syndrome is a collection of symptoms that result from insufficient quantity or quality of tears. Symptoms may include dry, red, irritated eyes. Often people suffering from dry eyes will feel a "gritty, sandy" sensation in their eyes. They may even have seemingly paradoxical watering eyes since the eyes will water or tear excessively as a reflex response to the dryness and irritation. The cause is usually due to either a decreased production of "normal" tears or increased evaporation of tears related to poor quality of the tear film. What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome? Several factors can contribute to dry eyes, including: Blepharitis Often dry eye symptoms can result from inflammation of the eye lid margins, which may be caused by a bacterial infection ( Staphylococci ). This condition is called blepharitis and can compromise the quality of the tear film causing tears to evaporate more quickly. The bacteria produce waste material which can cause a mild toxic reaction leading to chronic red, irritated eyes. The first step in treating this condition is to initiate better lid hygiene. There are many ways in which to do this, but warm compresses, or "lid scrubs,"

... How can I tell if dry eyes will be a problem for me? What is the proper pre-operative test for this?
1. Am I a good candidate?
The best way for you to determine this is with a thorough exam from your eye doctor. Appropriate candidates must be at least 18 years old, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma. Laser vision correction can treat a very broad range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Through an initial consultation with your eye doctor or at the nearest TLC Center, (you can book a consultation on line) your doctor will confirm if you are a good candidate, explain the procedure, and answer your questions so that you can make an informed decision. He or she will explain what results you can reasonably expect by measuring your prescription and thoroughly examining your eyes. Because eyesight does change with age, if you're not a candidate now, you may become one in the future. 2. What kind of results can I expect?

It has been reported that people who use computers extensively may experience dry eye symptoms which eventually disappear with rest. We wanted to determine whether keeping the eye moist, either by increasing the eye’s blink rate or by periodically supplying the eyes with saline, would help to relieve recurring dry eye symptoms. Methods. Six subjects (2 females and 4 males, age:26 10) who use computers frequently participated in the experiment. They were not diagnosed with chronic dry eye syndromes or other eye diseases but have often experienced dry eye symptoms while working with computers. All but one were first-time subjects to our experiment. To trigger blinking or to periodically supply drops to the subject’s eyes, the Automatically Medicated Instrument for Eyedrops (AMIE) was used. It was set to automatically eject either a minuscule jet of air every 10 seconds (6 ejections/minute) or a 5

What is Dry Eye?
What are the Symptoms? What Causes Dry Eye? How is it Cured? ... How do I get Relief? What is Dry Eye? A thin layer of tears coats the surface of normal, healthy eyes. This special fluid keeps your eyes healthy and comfortable by lubricating and protecting the surface. The glands around your eyes constantly replenish these tears, as they normally evaporate or drain down through the tear duct. Dry Eye occurs when something interferes with the tears' normal production or function, leaving your eyes unprotected.

http://www.inspirepharm.com/disease.html
Disease Conditions Dry Eye
Dry eye, an ocular surface disease, is the general term for a condition in which abnormalities in the eye's tear film lead to burning, painful, red, irritated, gritty and dry eyes. These abnormalities are typically characterized by a decrease in tear production, an increase in tear evaporation or the improper mixture of the eye's tear film components. If left untreated, dry eye disease can result in permanent corneal damage and visual impairment.
The current treatments for dry eye disorders in the major markets consist of artificial tear solutions and lubricant drops. In some cases, small plugs are inserted by physicians in the corner of the eyes to slow tear drainage. Artificial tears, which are available as over-the-counter and, in some countries, as prescription products, provide temporary relief of symptoms, but can also wash out the natural proteins and other components that keep an eye healthy. There are currently no FDA approved pharmacologically active agents, drugs that work by affecting a biological process such as stimulation of a receptor, for dry eye disease.
We estimate, based on an extrapolation from United States data, that moderate to severe dry eye affects approximately nine million people in the eight major international prescription pharmaceutical markets and can be caused by eye stress, aging, environmental factors, autoimmune disorders and various medications. Because dry eye disease is more prevalent among the elderly and post-menopausal women, this market is expected to grow as populations age.

WHAT IS KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS SICCA?
The tear film consists of 3 layers: A superficial lipid (oily) layer which decreases evaporation, a middle aqueous layer which contributes 90% of the tear film, and a deep mucin layer which facilitates spreading of the tears over the cornea. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) occurs whenever there is decreased production of tears or increased evaporation or break-up of the tear film. The problem is most common in dogs but occasionally occurs in cats and horses. Usually the problem arises as a decrease in aqueous tear production which may occur as a result of toxic or inflammatory degeneration of the lacrimal glands (certain drugs, viruses, etc have been incriminated), damage to the innervation of the lacrimal glands, or chronic conjunctivitis. In many cases no specific cause can be identified. When the aqueous tear production decreases, mixing of the oily and mucin layers occurs producing a thick, yellowish, ropy discharge which clings to the eye. Drying of the cornea produces irritation which results in vascularization, pigmentation, and scarring of the cornea.

Unique potions to avoid a dry spell
by Maxine Lipner Contributing Editor
U nfortunately, practitioners can’t wave a magic wand or chant a clever incantation to rid a patient of dry eyes. Hocus-pocus and sorcery aside, there are some innovative products on the market that can help dry-eye patients in ways traditional tears can’t. From a unique liposomal spray applied through a closed eyelid to a vanishing preservative found in TheraTears (0.25% sodium carboxymethylcellulose, Advanced Vision Research), we’ve investigated some novel dry-eye options.
Eyes closed: Presto chango
Tears Again Liposome Spray (Cynacon/Ocusoft) is sprayed onto a closed eyelid from four to six inches away. “The spray functions principally as a sealant,” said Troy E. Smith, the company’s director of sales and marketing. “The liposomes used in this patented formula are so small (60 to 100 nm) that they act to seal in and preserve the naturally occurring lipid processes. Others have theorized that there is also a ‘migratory effect’ stemming from the belief that as the patient blinks, these liposomes migrate from the lid margins onto the tear film and add to the lipid layer of the tear film,” Smith said. The spray is combined in solution with vitamins A and E. “It’s all natural and it’s fine if you get it on your face, because those vitamins are great for your skin,” Smith said. This product is designed for patients with milder, evaporative dry-eye problems.

Dry eye and allergy symptoms seem similar but treatments differ

T he similar signs and symptoms of allergy and dry eye can lead to difficulties in diagnosis and delay in implementation of appropriate therapy. To confuse matters further, ocular allergy and dry eye can occur together and exacerbate each other.
Diagnosis of ocular allergy or dry eye can be difficult because often patients present with ocular redness and complain of irritated or uncomfortable eyes, without specifying the exact feeling. As redness is one of the most common signs of both dry eye and allergy, this alone is not enough information to differentiate between the two conditions. If patients can clarify the feeling in their eyes to specifically state whether they feel itching, burning, foreign-body sensation, or dryness, this can significantly aid in diagnosis. Itching is the hallmark symptom of allergy, whereas dry eye sufferers most often complain of a burning or foreign body sensation.
