Dubowitz syndrom Formodentlig autosomal recessiv sygdom med væksthæmning, mikrocefali (for lille hoved) og eczem samt et karakteristisk ansigt. I nogle tilfælde ses mental retardering. Gendefekten er ikke kendt. Familiær forekomst er relativ hyppig (søskende). Syndromet blev først beskrevet af Dubowitz i 1965. Siden da er ca 150 personer med syndromet rapporteret. Ansigtstrækkene omfatter bl.a. blefarofimosis (for små øjenspalter), hypertelorisme (øget afstand mellem øjnene), mikrognati (for lille hage). Udviklings- og væksthæmningen er meget varierende, og nogle har normal udvikling og vækst. Det er karakteristisk, at personer med syndromet er hyperaktive og glade for rytmisk musik. Diagnosen stilles på de kliniske symptomer, hvoraf ansigtstrækkene er de mest diagnostiske. Mange organsystemer kan desuden være involveret, men er det ikke nødvendigvis. Følgende er ikke en udtømmende liste, men eksempler. Øjne: f eks skelen, dårligt syn. Tænder: manglende tandanlæg, uregelmæssige tænder. Hud: Svært, kløende eczem i småbarnsalderen, ofte med bedring senere. Mavetarmkanal: dårlig trivsel, opkastninger, forstoppelse. Skelet: abnorme fingerstilllinger, sammenvoksede tæer, skoliose (skæv ryg), overstrækbare led. Hjerte-karsystemet: medfødte hjertemisdannelser. Nyre-Urinveje: reflux (tilbageløb af urin), små ydre kønskarakterer, manglende testikler i pungen. Immunsystemet: øget forekomst af infektioner. Behandlingen retter sig mod symptomerne.
