A reference to anything much below the usual or average size; as, dwarf tree; dwarf honeysuckle. Midget 1. Offensive. An extremely little person who is of proportionate stature. 2. A small or miniature version of something. 3. A class of small objects, as a class of very small sailboats or racing cars. adjective 1. Miniature; diminutive. 2. Belonging to a type or class much smaller than what is considered standard: a midget automobile. Note: We are first and foremost human beings, it is secondary that we are human beings who are of restricted growth. Use of the word "midget" to describe someone of short stature is considered extremely offensive by some people. It is better to refer to someone of short stature as a "Little Person" or "Dwarf". Also, some people find the term "dwarf" as equally offensive as "midget". If people, both average and short stature, were able to place their humanity before everything else, the world might be a much better place. The more we stick labels on each other, the more we segregate ourselves, and the more we encourage ignorance and prejudice. Names From Around The World Worldwide Dwarf Population There are many conditions and diseases that can cause short stature. Some of these conditions involve a primary bone disorder - the bones do not grow and develop normally. These conditions are called skeletal dysplasia. Over 500 specific skeletal dysplasias have been identified. Of these, Achondroplasia is the most common, affecting about 80% of all Little People. An individual with Achondroplasia has disproportionate short stature. It occurs in all races and with equal frequency in males and females, and affects about one in every 40,000 children (this was the most conservative estimate available).

LPA Online Little People of America FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What is the definition of dwarfism? A: Little People of America (LPA) defines dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. Q: What are the most common types of dwarfism? A: By far the most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia , a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. (The term "disproportionate" is meant only as a point of comparison with people who do not have achondroplasia or any other type of skeletal dysplasia. The arms and legs of a person with achondroplasia are perfectly appropriate for someone with that genetic condition.) The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other genetic conditions that result in short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED) diastrophic dysplasia pseudoachondroplasia hypochondroplasia , and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) .
